The practical version is a heat-triggered prototype, not a proven animal-identification system: the available project examples show thermal capture and display, but do not establish garden detection range, species recognition, or false-alarm rates.
What the ESP32 thermal camera actually detects
The MLX90640 is a thermal sensor that measures a scene as a 32×24 grid—768 temperature pixels—and sends those readings to the ESP32 over I2C. Software can compare pixels with a threshold or a learned background and react when a region becomes warmer or changes. That can flag a possible heat source; it does not provide the detail of a conventional photograph or, by itself, identify an animal. The module documentation describes the array and its interface.

A thermal-only build and a visible-light camera are separate sensor paths. An ordinary visible camera does not sense heat. Espressif’s esp32-camera driver supports image sensors on ESP32, ESP32-S2, and ESP32-S3, but image capture brings memory and performance constraints. Its documentation warns that RGB/YUV processing can strain the chip, particularly alongside Wi-Fi.
Choose a thermal sensor field of view for the garden
The cited MLX90640 module document lists two field-of-view choices, 55°×35° and 110°×75°. A narrower view concentrates the array on less of the scene; a wider view covers more ground from the same position but gives each object fewer pixels. Which is more useful depends on the layout and target size, not on a universally best lens.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Choice | What the cited document establishes | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 55°×35° | One listed field-of-view option for the MLX90640 module. Module document | Consider it for a more focused path through the scene; verify that the intended area fits in view. |
| 110°×75° | One listed field-of-view option for the MLX90640 module. Module document | Consider it for broader coverage nearby, bearing in mind that a target occupies fewer of the 32×24 pixels. |
No tested garden detection distance is established for either option. Do not assign a range based on field of view alone: the lens, mounting geometry, target dimensions, ambient conditions, and actual field tests all matter.
Plan the alert logic and refresh rate
At a high level, the ESP32 reads thermal frames, establishes a background or threshold, looks for a sufficiently warm region or meaningful change, and triggers an output such as a notification. This is a reasonable project design, not a validated detection algorithm. Outdoor use needs calibration and a record of false triggers so the threshold and placement can be adjusted against real conditions.

Refresh rate depends on the complete sensor, wiring, library, and application setup. One ESP32 thermal-camera project reports up to 4 frames per second; that is a project-specific report, not a guaranteed system rate. Its README describes a Wi-Fi web view. By contrast, Adafruit’s documented MLX90640 example sets the refresh rate to 2 Hz and notes that higher settings can lead to read retries with some combinations. See the library documentation. Treat both figures as implementation examples rather than promises for a garden build.

Decide whether to add visible-light images
A visible camera can provide context for a thermal alert, but it adds another sensor path and greater memory and processing demands. Follow the camera driver requirements for the specific board, sensor, PSRAM, and frame format. Espressif cautions that RGB/YUV capture can cause missing image data, especially when Wi-Fi is also in use. A thermal-only alert avoids implying that the thermal array produces ordinary photos.

One ESP32-S3 project renders a 32×24 thermal input as a 320×240 image and streams it over USB UVC. The enlarged output is a visualization, not extra sensor detail. The project README is an example of rendering and streaming, not an independent garden-performance test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before relying on it outdoors
- Confirm the module’s I2C and electrical requirements match the chosen ESP32 board.
- Choose the field of view based on the area to watch and how large the target should appear in the thermal grid.
- Fix the sensor position and allow time to calibrate the background and alert threshold.
- Record false triggers and missed detections during actual use before treating alerts as reliable.
- For a visible camera, check PSRAM and frame-format requirements and test capture with Wi-Fi enabled.
- Determine the enclosure and power arrangement for the particular installation; the cited projects do not establish weatherproof performance.
The cited material contains no garden trials, target-size tests, validated animal-classification results, detection-range measurements, or false-alarm statistics. It supports a thermal sensing and display prototype, while the reliability of any outdoor alert remains something the specific build must demonstrate.
