The board most closely matching the “$5 ESP32-S3” description is Waveshare’s ESP32-S3-Zero, a compact module built around Espressif’s dual-core ESP32-S3. Its listed configurations currently start at $5.49—not exactly $5—and cost more depending on memory and whether headers are pre-soldered. It is designed for compact builds and carrier-board soldering, not as a conventional breadboard-ready development kit.
Which board does the “$5 ESP32-S3” description refer to?
The title appears to describe the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Zero. That identification is a likely match, not a certainty: the headline does not name a manufacturer or model. Waveshare’s product page lists a displayed price range of $5.49–$7.99, with the price depending on the selected memory and header options. Those are listed prices, not a guarantee of the price at checkout.

The ESP32-S3-Zero is a small castellated board with an onboard ceramic antenna. Waveshare describes it as suitable for surface-mount applications; its edge contacts are intended for soldering to a carrier board. That makes it useful when a compact footprint matters, but it is not interchangeable in convenience with a development board designed for breadboard or jumper-wire use.

What does the 240 MHz dual-core specification mean?
Espressif specifies the ESP32-S3 as a dual-core Xtensa LX7 microcontroller capable of running at up to 240 MHz. This is the chip maker’s maximum clock specification, not a benchmark showing how quickly a particular program runs. Real application performance depends on the workload, software, memory use, and board design.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Espressif also lists 512 KB of internal SRAM, 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5 LE, and 45 programmable GPIOs for the ESP32-S3. The chip includes vector instructions intended to support neural-network computing and signal processing, but those features do not guarantee that a specific model or signal-processing task will meet its speed or memory requirements.
Those are chip-level capabilities, not a promise that every pin is exposed or easy to reach on the ESP32-S3-Zero. A compact board’s layout determines which connections are practical for a project.

Which ESP32-S3-Zero configuration should you check?
Waveshare lists two memory configurations and two header-assembly choices. Confirm the exact selection on the product page before ordering; the options affect both what arrives and the displayed price.
| Listed choice | What the product page specifies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Memory configuration | 4 MB flash / 2 MB PSRAM, or 8 MB flash / 8 MB PSRAM | Flash stores firmware and other data; PSRAM provides additional working memory. Choose based on the needs of your software and project. |
| Header assembly | Pre-soldered or unsoldered headers | Pre-soldered headers change how the board can be wired; an unsoldered option requires you to make the intended connections yourself. |
| Displayed price | $5.49–$7.99 across listed options | The headline’s “$5” is approximate. Check the selected configuration and current checkout price. |
The ESP32-S3-MINI-1 and MINI-1U module datasheet offers context for the chip-to-module distinction: its version 1.7 feature list includes dual-core LX7 operation up to 240 MHz, 384 KB ROM, 512 KB SRAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE 5, and support for different flash and PSRAM configurations. Those module-family details should not be treated as a precise parts list for every third-party board. Waveshare’s own configuration listing is the relevant reference for the ESP32-S3-Zero’s options.

Is it the right board for a breadboard?
Choose based on how you plan to connect the board. The ESP32-S3-Zero’s compact castellated format favors soldering into a carrier or embedded design. If your priority is exposed pins for breadboard or jumper wiring, Espressif’s ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is a more directly relevant alternative. Espressif lists a $15 sample reference price for that development kit; that is a manufacturer-listed reference figure, not a guarantee of current retail pricing.
Espressif’s chip page lists 45 programmable GPIOs, but that does not mean a particular development board or compact module exposes all 45 in a convenient way. Check the board’s pinout and physical connections for the functions your project needs rather than comparing boards by the chip specification alone.

What is established—and what is not?
- Established by Espressif: the ESP32-S3’s dual-core LX7 architecture, maximum 240 MHz clock, internal SRAM, wireless capabilities, GPIO count, and listed peripheral features.
- Established by Waveshare: the ESP32-S3-Zero’s castellated format, ceramic antenna, listed memory and header options, and displayed price range.
- Not established by these product specifications: independent benchmark performance, measured power draw, or whether a specific application will fit or run well on a selected configuration.
- Not confirmed for the ESP32-S3-Zero: an Amazon US listing. Espressif identifies Amazon US as a channel for the DevKitC-1, but that does not establish availability of the Waveshare board there.
For exact connector type, included cable, pin access, or other assembly details, check the selected board’s current documentation and product listing. The cited specifications do not establish those details.
