Choose the ESP32-S3 when your project can use its documented vector-instruction acceleration for supported neural-network or signal-processing workloads. Choose the ESP32-C6 when you need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6 or IEEE 802.15.4 for Thread or Zigbee. These are different strengths, not proof that one chip is universally faster or better.
One important distinction: the S3’s “AI” capability is MCU vector instructions used through software libraries, not a standalone AI accelerator. And Matter is not synonymous with Thread: Espressif documents S3 among the platforms for Matter over Wi-Fi, while C6 can support Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread. The right choice depends on the workload, radio, and exact board.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results. Confirm the exact chip, package, module, and board documentation before treating a family-level figure as a board-level guarantee. Espressif ESP32-S3 specifications and Espressif ESP32-C6 specifications provide the product details.
When should you choose the ESP32-S3?
Choose S3 for supported embedded AI or DSP work
Espressif says the S3’s vector instructions provide acceleration for neural-network computing and signal processing. That can make S3 a sensible starting point for projects using software such as ESP-NN or ESP-DSP, but it does not guarantee a model will fit in memory or meet a target runtime. Validate the actual model, data, library, and memory configuration on the intended hardware. The feature is vector-instruction support in the MCU, not evidence of a dedicated neural-processing unit.

- ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8 SPI voltage: 3.3v, ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is an entry-level development board equipped with Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module ESP32-S3
- Most of the I/O pins on the module are broken out to the pin headers on both sides of this board for easy interfacing. Developers can either connect peripherals with jumper wires or mount ESP32-S3-DevKitC on a breadboard.
- The ESP32-S3-DevKitC development board equipped with ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8, a general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth LE MCU module that integrates complete Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE functions.
- ESP32-S3-N16R8 cable can be used: USB Type A to Type-C cable or CC cable Note the distinction between the commonly used USB A port to Type-C cable that can only be charged, which cannot be used for communication between YD-ESP32-S3 and the host.
- USB-to-UART Port and ESP32-S3 USB Port (either one or both), default power supply (recommended)
Choose S3 when its peripheral and pin options fit
Espressif lists 45 programmable GPIOs for the S3 product family. The usable pins on a particular module or development board may be fewer because of package limits, board routing, or reserved functions, so check the board pinout rather than relying on the SoC headline number.

Choose C6 when you need Wi-Fi 6 or 802.15.4
C6 combines Wi-Fi 6 in the 2.4 GHz band with Bluetooth 5 LE and IEEE 802.15.4. The 802.15.4 radio opens Thread and Zigbee project paths; Wi-Fi 6 does not mean 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If a project specifically requires 802.15.4, C6 is the fit between these two chips.

Choose C6 for Matter over Thread endpoint development
Espressif identifies 802.15.4 platforms such as C6 for Matter Thread devices. It also describes C6 as suitable for Matter Wi-Fi endpoint development. A chip with the relevant radio is only a platform option: a finished product still depends on its software implementation, product design, and applicable certification. Espressif’s Matter platform documentation and ESP Matter solution page describe supported platform use cases.
Can the ESP32-S3 work with Matter?
Yes, for Matter over Wi-Fi device development. Espressif documents Wi-Fi-enabled ESP32-S and ESP32-C series SoCs, including S3, for Matter Wi-Fi devices; its platform guidance distinguishes these from 802.15.4 platforms used for Matter Thread devices. So choose by the transport your product needs, not by assuming that every Matter project requires Thread or that S3 cannot be used for Matter.

What should you check before selecting a development board?
The chip name alone does not tell you whether a board fits your prototype. ESP32 family chips and modules have different configurations, and board makers make their own choices about memory, antenna, USB interface, exposed pins, and power design.
Recommended Free Tools
- Exact chip and module: Verify the listing and documentation name the intended SoC and module variant.
- Memory: Check the installed flash and PSRAM configuration against the program, model, and data requirements.
- Pins and peripherals: Compare the board pinout and routed peripherals with the sensors, buses, and other hardware you plan to connect.
- Radio and antenna: Confirm the board’s antenna arrangement suits the wireless requirements of the project.
- USB and power: Check the interface used for programming and the board’s power design for your setup.
- Software support: Check the current ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter documentation for the chip and features you intend to use.
Espressif’s official product selector covers multiple chip and module variants, but it does not establish a single best third-party development board. Espressif’s technical-document index is a useful starting point for checking current software documentation; consult the exact board and datasheet documents as well.

Which one should you use?
- Use ESP32-S3 as your starting point if supported vector-accelerated neural-network or signal-processing work is central, or its available pins and peripherals better match your design.
- Use ESP32-C6 if you need Wi-Fi 6 or IEEE 802.15.4 for Thread or Zigbee, including Matter Thread endpoint development.
- For Matter over Wi-Fi, either may be a candidate; verify the current software support and the specific board for your implementation.
Neither specification sheet establishes a universal performance winner. If speed, memory headroom, radio behavior, or power use determines success, test the intended application on the exact board and software stack you plan to deploy.
