ESP32-S3 USB Device Mode vs. Host Mode: What Each Can Do

ESP32-S3 USB OTG can operate as a host or device, but the right mode depends on firmware, PHY routing, board design, and— for host mode—VBUS power.

The ESP32-S3 can act as either a USB device or a USB host through its configurable USB OTG controller. In device mode, a computer or other host recognizes the ESP32-S3 as a peripheral; in host mode, the ESP32-S3 communicates with peripherals such as HID devices, CDC serial adapters, and mass-storage drives. Its separate USB Serial/JTAG controller is fixed-function hardware for serial, flashing, and debugging—not a general-purpose USB port.

What changes between device mode and host mode?

The distinction is who controls the USB connection. The USB OTG controller supports both roles, but your firmware, USB stack, board wiring, and power design determine what you can actually do.

Decision Device mode Host mode
Who starts the relationship? A computer or other upstream host enumerates the ESP32-S3. The ESP32-S3 controls an attached USB peripheral.
Typical documented uses HID or mass-storage device functions; OTG-based DFU. Connecting to HID peripherals, CDC serial adapters, or mass storage.
Software requirement A device stack that implements the desired USB function or class. A host stack and a class driver for the attached peripheral.
Hardware requirement Correct OTG-to-PHY and connector routing. Correct OTG-to-PHY routing and a host port that supplies VBUS.
Project fit Make the ESP32-S3 appear to a PC or other host as a custom peripheral. Use the ESP32-S3 to read from or control USB peripherals.

Espressif describes ESP32-S2 and ESP32-S3 OTG as supporting both host and device functions, with full-speed USB at 12 Mbps—not high-speed USB. See the Espressif USB FAQ.

What can the ESP32-S3 do as a USB device?

In device mode, the ESP32-S3 presents a USB function for an upstream host to enumerate. The selected firmware and device stack determine what the host sees; the chip does not automatically become a keyboard, drive, or other class device just because it is connected by USB.

  • DFU: Espressif documents OTG-based device firmware update (DFU), a way to expose a firmware-update function to a host.

For device projects, verify that the chosen stack supports the class or function you need, then check that the board routes the OTG controller to the intended USB connector and PHY. The ESP-IDF USB OTG guide covers controller and PHY configuration.

What can the ESP32-S3 do as a USB host?

In host mode, the ESP32-S3 initiates and manages communication with an attached USB peripheral. Arduino-ESP32’s host API names HID devices, CDC serial adapters, and mass storage as examples; practical compatibility depends on the host stack and available class drivers.

  • Mass-storage devices: A supported host implementation can work with storage peripherals.

Arduino-ESP32 documents a TinyUSB-based host API. Its host stack requires the OTG peripheral, and the TinyUSB device stack must not own that peripheral at the same time. ESP-IDF provides a separate USB host stack; only one host stack can own the OTG peripheral at once. See the Arduino-ESP32 USB Host API and the ESP-IDF USB Host guide.

USB Serial/JTAG is not the programmable OTG port

The ESP32-S3 has two USB controllers with different jobs. USB Serial/JTAG provides a hardware serial channel, firmware flashing, and JTAG debugging. It is fixed-function hardware: Espressif states that it “cannot be reconfigured to perform any function other than a serial port and JTAG debugging functionality.” The configurable USB OTG controller is the one used for general host or device applications. Read Espressif’s USB Serial/JTAG Controller Console guide for the fixed-function controller’s role.

Check PHY routing before designing around USB OTG

Do not assume that the internal USB PHY is freely available to OTG on every chip configuration or board. Current ESP-IDF documentation says the internal PHY is connected to USB_SERIAL_JTAG by default. OTG can use it after the PHY selection is changed; otherwise, OTG requires an external PHY. Espressif documents burning the USB_PHY_SEL eFuse to switch the internal PHY to OTG, so this is a hardware and configuration decision—not a setting to assume is available on every finished board.

  • Check the exact ESP32-S3 configuration and USB_PHY_SEL eFuse state.
  • Check the board schematic and connector routing to determine which controller and PHY the port actually reaches.
  • Check the ESP-IDF or Arduino core version and its relevant USB stack configuration.

The applicable PHY details are in the ESP-IDF USB OTG documentation.

Host mode needs a VBUS power path

USB host hardware must provide VBUS power to the attached peripheral. A board may expose USB data lines without including the power switching or supply arrangement needed for host operation. Arduino-ESP32’s host API describes a board initialization hook where a board variant can switch a bus mux and enable a 5 V supply; its default hook is empty. Confirm your board’s schematic and initialization behavior before connecting a device. The correct cable or power hardware depends on that board, so a generic cable is not a universal fix.

Use the board’s signal routing, not just its connector labels

Espressif’s ESP32-S3-USB-OTG development board is a concrete example of a platform designed to support both roles: its guide documents a Type-A female host connector, a device connector, and a USB switch IC for routing. The guide also warns that connector labels and signals in its functional block diagram may look reversed relative to the role the ESP32-S3 performs. Follow the actual signal routing and role rather than inferring behavior from a connector name. See the ESP32-S3-USB-OTG board guide.

Which mode should you choose?

  • Choose device mode when a PC or other host needs to enumerate the ESP32-S3 as a peripheral, and your intended function is supported by the device stack.
  • Choose host mode when the ESP32-S3 needs to control a USB peripheral, and your stack supports that device class and your board provides VBUS.
  • For a board intended to support both roles, verify the controller/PHY routing, switching, power path, and software ownership for each role before committing to the design.
