ESC/POS and raw printing are not competing printer languages. ESC/POS is a command language; “raw” describes sending bytes directly rather than having a general-purpose printer driver translate a document. An ESP32 can send raw bytes that contain ESC/POS commands. Choose the approach based on what your exact printer supports, how much control you need, and whether its interface can connect safely to the ESP32.
What is the difference between ESC/POS and raw printing?
ESC/POS is a set of printer commands used to control functions such as text output, feeding paper, printing images, barcodes and QR codes, reporting status, and cutting paper where supported. Epson describes it as its original command system for POS printers and customer displays. Its technical reference notes that direct control requires knowledge of printer specifications and command combinations compared with using drivers or applications. Epson TM-m30II-H Technical Reference Guide.

“Raw” usually means your application passes a byte buffer to an output path without asking a document driver to render and translate a page. Those bytes may be ESC/POS commands, plain text, or another format the printer understands. So an ESP32 program that writes ESC/POS bytes over a compatible interface is both raw printing and ESC/POS printing.

For a straightforward receipt, send the commands your printer documents as supported. Use direct byte output when you want to construct commands yourself and are comfortable handling the printer’s command details. Use a library or driver when it reduces work such as composing receipt output or converting images; it does not make unsupported printer commands work or solve an incompatible connection.

| Approach | What it does | Best fit | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct raw bytes containing ESC/POS | Your ESP32 application constructs and sends command bytes to the printer through a compatible transport. | Projects needing direct control over supported printer functions and a simple, tailored output path. | You must follow the printer’s command specifications and handle the transport and byte-level details yourself. Epson says direct ESC/POS control requires knowledge of specifications and command combinations: TM-m30II-H Technical Reference Guide. |
| Higher-level library or driver | A software layer helps build or render output, then sends it using a supported path. | Projects where simplifying layout or tasks such as image conversion is more useful than constructing every command directly. | The library still depends on the printer’s implemented commands and a working physical interface. |
These are implementation choices, not separate printer protocols. A library may itself generate ESC/POS bytes, while a direct-output program may send the same command stream without a library.
Check command support on the exact printer model
Do not treat “ESC/POS compatible” as proof that every ESC/POS command is implemented. Command availability varies by model. Epson’s TM-T20X supported-commands reference is an example of a model-specific list. Epson’s broader ESC/POS command reference catalogs command categories, including image, barcode, QR, character, feed, cut, and status commands; the target printer’s own documentation determines which you can rely on.

- The 58mm embedded micro thermal printer has excellent performance, clear printing and beautiful structure, and is widely used in medical instruments, testing instruments and other equipment. CAD or 3D drawings are available. It works perfectly with your device, making printing easier than ever. Easily embedded into any type of instrumentation for printing.
- This thermal receipt printer can be connected to Arduino,MCU, Android, Linux, Windows systems and other platforms, and Android provides a secondary development kit. It can easily print text, pictures, barcodes, QR codes, etc. Provide ESC/POS printing instruction set and development materials.
- The printer supports a wide voltage range of 12V~24V, and the maximum voltage cannot exceed 24V. We provide three physical interfaces, RS232/TTL+USB, with TTL as the default. If you need to switch to RS232, you can contact us by email and we will tell you how to switch.
- We really like this printer because its easy to make Bold, underline , inverted text , variable line spacing, left/center/right justification, barcodes with adjustable height, and even custom QR code.
- Open the paper compartment cover on the front panel to change the paper, the operation is simple and convenient. The structure is beautiful, and the slider can be moved to fix the printer on the device by twisting the screws on both sides of the paper bin.
- Identify the printer’s exact model and consult its manual or supported-command list.
- Confirm that the commands needed for your receipt are listed for that model; pay particular attention to optional functions such as QR printing, status queries, or cutting.
- Check any library’s supported printer models and output assumptions against the same documentation.
The Epson TM-T20X is a documented example of a printer with an ESC/POS command reference. That establishes command support information for the model; it does not establish that the printer can be wired directly to an ESP32.

Choose and verify the connection separately
ESC/POS describes what the printer is asked to do. UART, USB, and network connections describe how bytes get there. An ESP32’s UART peripheral is a transport option, not a printer language and not proof that a particular printer accepts direct UART wiring. Espressif documents UART support in the ESP-IDF UART reference for ESP32.

Before connecting hardware, check both devices’ documentation for the printer’s host interface and, when using serial, its settings and electrical requirements. Do not infer compatible logic voltage, pin levels, baud rate, connector, or wiring from the words “thermal printer” or “UART.” Use an appropriate interface circuit or adapter if the documented electrical interfaces do not match. The cited ESP-IDF UART documentation describes the ESP32 peripheral; it does not validate a particular ESP32-to-printer wiring scheme.
A practical setup sequence
- Identify the printer. Record the exact model and locate its official technical reference or supported-command list.
- Select the needed printer features. Choose only commands documented for that model, rather than assuming the full ESC/POS command catalog is available.
- Select the transport. Match a printer host interface to a suitable ESP32 connection path, checking required adapters and electrical specifications in both hardware manuals.
- Decide whether to construct bytes directly. If the receipt uses a modest set of documented commands and you want direct control, raw ESC/POS output is reasonable. If composing output or converting images is a burden, consider a library or driver that supports the model and transport.
- Validate one feature at a time. Start with a minimal output using documented commands, then add only the other functions your project needs. Diagnose command support separately from interface or wiring problems.
What the documentation establishes—and what it does not
Epson’s references establish ESC/POS command documentation and model-specific support information; Espressif’s reference establishes UART support on ESP32. Together, these sources support the distinction between command language and transport, but they do not certify a particular printer-and-ESP32 wiring arrangement or guarantee that a given library supports your printer. Verify those details from the exact printer and adapter documentation before building around them.
