It does not reserve a seat or lock in the price. Fares and available ticket options can change before you open the notification, so treat it as a prompt to check the current offer—not as a guaranteed quote.
What a flight price alert tracks
On Google Flights, you can track either a route or a specific flight. Tracking can be for selected dates or, when your dates are flexible, for “Any dates.” Google says it may email you when the price for a tracked route or flight changes significantly. For an any-dates route, it may email when the route’s minimum fare drops significantly over a month; if no large drop occurs, it can send regular updates with the best available prices. It may also alert you when a tracked route is likely to rise or a current fare may expire soon and a replacement is likely to cost more. Google’s price-tracking help page describes these notification conditions, but not a universal refresh schedule or delivery time.

That distinction matters: an alert reports what the service detected; it is not a live feed you can rely on to show the same inventory at the moment you read it. Reopen the search and verify what is available now.

Why the price may be different when you check
Fare availability changes
Airlines manage inventory by opening and closing fare classes, using forecasts of demand alongside pricing strategy. IATA’s explanation of airline revenue management identifies factors such as competition, costs, codeshares and alliances, and market conditions as influences on pricing decisions. If a lower-priced fare is no longer available, a higher-priced offer may become the one shown. That industry explanation does not establish why a particular alert changed. IATA’s 2025 overview of revenue management describes the broader process.

IATA’s retailing vision also explains that booking classes host fares of particular values and provide availability information to pricing engines. This is about fare and offer availability; it is not evidence that your individual search or alert caused a price increase. IATA’s retailing fact sheet provides background on that system.
The offer may not be the same ticket
A search result with a different headline price may represent a different fare product, even when the route and flight look similar. In the United States, the Department of Transportation notes that ticket types can carry different restrictions. Discounted or basic economy fares, for example, may have stricter rules for refunds, baggage, or seat assignment. Compare the terms as well as the amount before concluding that the same fare went up. The DOT’s airline customer-service guidance explains common differences in ticket conditions.

What a price prediction can—and cannot—tell you
Google’s tips such as “prices are unlikely to drop” or “prices are likely to increase” are predictions based on past flight-price trends. Google cautions that future prices may not behave as expected. Some alerts may include an estimated increase and confidence in that estimate, but Google does not publish a universal accuracy rate or a full forecast methodology on its help pages. Use the tip as one consideration in your decision, not as a promise that the fare will move in a particular direction. Google explains its tracking and price tips here, and its flight-search help page describes how to use flight results.
IATA reported a global aviation profit margin of 3.7%, or a little above $7 per passenger per segment, in 2025. That figure is broad industry context; it does not establish an individual airline’s margin or explain a specific fare change. IATA’s 2025 overview includes the statistic.

How to check an alert before you book
- Reopen the itinerary. Confirm the travel dates, airports, stops, cabin, passenger count, airline, and flight numbers. A result for a similar route is not necessarily the same trip.
- Compare the ticket terms. Check baggage, seat assignment, refundability, change rules, and any optional extras that matter to you. The DOT says advertised U.S. ticket prices must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier surcharges; optional services and ticket restrictions still need separate attention. DOT guidance on airline advertising covers fare displays.
- Verify the seller’s current offer. Google Flights can send you to an airline or an online travel agency. Check the current total and conditions with the seller that will take your booking; the alert itself is not the booking offer.
- Decide using the trip’s priorities. Compare mandatory total price, exact itinerary and schedule, fare restrictions, included baggage and seat selection, change and refund flexibility, and seller. Google’s “Best” and “Cheapest” groupings can involve trade-offs such as convenience, online travel agency links, or self-transfer arrangements, so the lowest number may not be the closest substitute.
When a fare is supposed to stay fixed
In the United States, the DOT says an airline generally cannot raise a fare after the purchase is complete and the transaction has been completed, with an exception for a specified government tax or fee change when disclosure and consent conditions are met. This rule is different from a pre-purchase quote changing while you are checking out. DOT’s notice on post-purchase price increases explains the rule and its exception.
