The Federal Aviation Administration describes GPS and GLONASS as part of the broader category of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). A receiver uses satellite signals to work out where it is and what time it is; the platform that later receives or forwards that information is a separate component. Is ERA-GLONASS a navigation system?
No. ERA-GLONASS is not a satellite constellation that a drone receiver can use instead of GPS. It is a platform for emergency-response and telematics data. A connected terminal can use GLONASS and GPS signals to determine location, then transmit information to the platform over communications links.

For example, a vehicle terminal can send an accident’s location, time, and severity to ERA-GLONASS, which can pass the information to emergency services. Does a drone use GPS or GLONASS?
A drone’s receiver may use GPS, GLONASS, or multiple GNSS constellations, depending on the aircraft’s hardware and software. Satellite navigation helps determine the drone’s position; it is separate from any tracking or reporting service that may receive the resulting data.
The FAA says its GPS service provides basic accuracy of approximately 7 meters 95% of the time on or near Earth’s surface. That is a general GPS service figure, not a guarantee of a particular drone’s accuracy. The FAA page lists 31 GPS satellites; the count can change over time, so treat it as the figure on that page when accessed in 2026 rather than a permanent total. What does this distinction mean for drones in Russia?
A report published by TechRadar on September 30, 2026, says that from October 1, 2026, flight-plan submissions for civilian drones weighing more than 250 grams in Russia would require a connection to ERA-GLONASS. The report also describes existing remote-identification rules as transmitting information such as the drone’s identity, owner, location, altitude, and route. Does connecting a drone to ERA-GLONASS allow remote control?
