You can start a YouTube livestream with a phone, or with a computer that has a webcam and a reliable internet connection. You do not need a separate camera, microphone, or lighting kit for every stream. Choose equipment based on how you plan to broadcast: mobile for quick updates, webcam for a simple computer-camera stream, or an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, and more involved productions.
Choose your YouTube streaming route first

What equipment each setup needs
Minimal mobile setup
A phone or tablet and a suitable network connection can handle both capture and broadcast. Check the signal where you plan to stream. If the phone must stay in one position, a tripod or selfie stick can reduce camera shake, but it is an optional accessory—not a YouTube requirement.

Use a computer with a webcam. If yours has no built-in camera, or its camera does not suit the shot, a USB webcam is a simple option. A quiet enough room and a dependable connection also matter. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming when practical.

Encoder setup for gameplay, screens, and production gear
An encoder—software or standalone hardware—turns video into a digital stream for YouTube. It is useful when you want to share gameplay or a screen, add overlays, connect external audio or video equipment, or manage several inputs. For a casual computer setup, YouTube gives an external microphone, webcam, and headphones as common examples; they are not mandatory for every encoder stream.
For a more involved production, you might add cameras, microphones, a mixer, or a hardware encoder. Match equipment to the inputs and production you actually need. An external USB microphone is an optional audio upgrade, not a required YouTube device; no particular model’s performance is established here.

Plan the internet connection and encoder settings
Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain
Test your upload speed and choose an encoder setting that the connection can reliably maintain. Download speed alone does not answer whether your outbound stream has enough capacity. Leave practical headroom for other network use, and prefer a wired Ethernet connection for a computer when available.

These are YouTube’s encoder bitrate settings, not universal internet-plan thresholds. A connection that barely reaches a listed value may still be unreliable under real conditions. The recommendations can change; check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current table and options by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Set codec, protocol, audio, and keyframes
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Video codec: General encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate mode: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
HDR is an advanced case. YouTube’s current help guidance says Live HDR uses H.265 (HEVC) and requires a compatible source and encoder. A basic starter setup does not need HDR.

Check eligibility and test before going public
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take time, so do not leave activation until event day.
- Choose the route and connect the intended gear. Select mobile, webcam, or encoder streaming. Connect the microphones, camera, headphones, and other production equipment you plan to use, then confirm the encoder recognizes the correct devices.
- Test the upload and select settings. Run an upload speed test, then choose a bitrate suited to the actual connection and planned resolution and frame rate. Use Ethernet for a computer setup where possible.
- Run an unlisted test stream. Use representative speech, music or other intended audio, and typical movement. Check the YouTube preview, confirm that sound and picture are correct, and monitor stream health before the public broadcast.
- For mobile, check signal and framing. Confirm the connection is usable at the filming location and stabilize the phone if the shot needs to remain fixed.
Common equipment and connection problems
- Stream drops or looks unstable: The upload connection may not reliably sustain the selected bitrate. Test upload capacity, reduce the encoder bitrate or output quality, and use Ethernet on a computer when possible.
- Video or audio is missing in the encoder: Check that the intended camera or microphone is connected, selected as the source, and available to the encoder. Verify the preview before going live.
- Mobile video shakes: Set the device on a stable surface or use an optional tripod or selfie stick for a fixed shot.
- First live broadcast cannot be started: Check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility, and allow time for initial activation rather than waiting until the event.
- Image quality does not match the chosen output: Confirm the source, encoder, and connection can all support the chosen resolution and frame rate. Lower the output setting if the connection cannot sustain its bitrate reliably.
