The NX420 is a USB 2.0 and 802.11 b/g/n wireless all-in-one. Installing only a printer driver can leave scanning or printer-control-panel features unavailable, so choose the package based on how you will connect and which functions you need.

Which Epson NX420 download should you choose?
Epson lists several downloads for the Stylus NX420. The right one depends on your Windows version, system architecture, and whether you need printing only or the complete printer-and-scanner feature set.

The combo package is the broadest option for Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 because it bundles the printer, scanner, Event Manager, status-monitor, and network-install components. If Epson’s operating-system filter does not show that package for your edition, do not force it: select the individual downloads that Epson lists for your system instead.

Check Windows version and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture first
Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 each have separate compatibility entries on Epson’s support page. The 32-bit and 64-bit distinction matters because a package built for the wrong architecture may refuse to install or may install without working correctly.
Find the Windows edition
- Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. Record whether the computer reports Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10. - On Windows 10, open Settings > System > About. On Windows 8, open the PC information screen from Settings > PC info. On Windows 7, right-click Computer, choose Properties, and read the Windows edition.
Find the system type
- In the same About or System window, find System type.
- Note whether it says 64-bit operating system or 32-bit operating system. Choose the matching architecture on Epson’s download page whenever separate choices are shown.
Do not confuse a 64-bit processor with a 64-bit Windows installation. Epson’s selection must match the installed operating system, not merely the processor’s capability.

Download the driver from Epson’s official NX420 page
- Open Epson’s official Stylus NX420 support page.
- Use the operating-system selector. If automatic detection is wrong, change the Windows version manually.
- Select the exact 32-bit or 64-bit entry shown for your installation.
- Read the description before downloading. For Windows 8, 8.1, or 10, select the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package when it is listed for your edition and you want both printing and scanning.
- For a scanner-only repair or a Windows 7 scanner installation, select Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.7.7.3 when Epson lists it for your architecture.
- Save the installer where you can find it, such as the Downloads folder. Keep the Epson package name visible so you do not accidentally run a similarly named file from another source.
The scanner package is dated January 7, 2016, while the combo package listing identifies Printer Driver v6.72 and its bundled utilities. These dates describe Epson’s posted package versions; they do not change the Windows architecture you must select.
Install the NX420 on Windows 7
Use Epson’s setup program
- After downloading the Windows 7-compatible printer or combo components, open the installer.
- Epson’s quick guide says that on Windows 7 and Windows Vista, if the AutoPlay window appears, click Run Setup.exe.
- Follow the Epson installation screen and allow the listed drivers and utilities to install.
- Choose the connection type offered by the installer: USB for a direct cable connection or the network option for a wireless setup.
- When setup finishes, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers and confirm that the NX420 appears.
Add scanning on Windows 7
Installing the printer portion does not necessarily install EPSON Scan. If printing works but scanning does not, run the Epson Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility package for the Windows 7 architecture shown on the support page. For scans started from the NX420’s control panel, install Epson Event Manager after the scanner package. Epson explicitly states that Event Manager is also required for that control-panel workflow.

Install the NX420 on Windows 8 or 8.1
- Confirm the edition and architecture in PC settings before downloading.
- On Epson’s support page, select Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, then choose the matching 32-bit or 64-bit package.
- Run the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package when it is available. It includes the printer and scanner drivers, Status Monitor 3, Event Manager, and Network Installer.
- Follow the prompts for a USB or wireless connection. For a network installation, leave the Network Installer component selected.
- After restarting if requested, test a print and open EPSON Scan to verify the scanner separately.
If the combo package is not offered for the exact edition detected on your computer, use Epson’s individual printer and scanner downloads instead of selecting an incompatible operating-system entry.
Install the NX420 on Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > About and record the Windows 10 system type.
- On Epson’s NX420 support page, manually select Windows 10 if automatic detection shows another release.
- Download the Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit Drivers and Utilities Combo Package when listed.
- Run the installer and select USB or network setup according to your connection.
- Allow the printer driver, scanner driver, Event Manager, Status Monitor, and Network Installer components to finish.
- Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners. Select the NX420 and choose Manage to print a test page.
- Launch EPSON Scan or another Windows scanning application and make a test scan. If the NX420’s physical control-panel scan button does not reach the computer, verify Event Manager installation and its device assignment.
USB versus wireless installation
USB connection
USB is the simplest arrangement: the NX420 connects directly to one computer through its USB 2.0 interface. Install Epson’s software first or follow the installer’s connection prompt, then confirm that Windows shows the printer under Printers & scanners or Devices and Printers.

Wireless or network connection
The NX420 supports 802.11 b/g/n wireless networking. Epson’s network manual says that you must install the necessary printer and scanner software before using the printer. For network setup and monitoring, Epson names Epson Network Utility and EpsonNet Print. The combo package’s Network Installer is intended for this broader setup.
- Connect the NX420 to the same wireless network that the Windows computer will use.
- Run the Epson Network Installer or the network option in the combo package.
- If the printer is not found, confirm that the computer and printer are on the same network and temporarily test over USB to separate a driver problem from a network-discovery problem.
- After the printer is added, test printing and scanning independently. A successful print does not prove that the scanner’s network component is configured.
Why scanning or control-panel commands may fail
EPSON Scan is missing
A printer-only installation can create a working print queue without installing EPSON Scan/TWAIN. Download and install Epson Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.7.7.3 for the correct Windows edition and architecture.

The scanner works from Windows but not from the NX420 buttons
For control-panel scanning, Epson requires Event Manager in addition to the scanner driver. Install Event Manager from the combo package or as a separate Epson utility when the support page lists it, then reopen the scanning application and test the NX420 button again.
Windows shows the wrong or duplicate printer
Remove an obsolete NX420 entry from Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners or Control Panel > Devices and Printers, disconnect the unused connection, and rerun the Epson installer with the intended USB or network choice. Keep the queue that corresponds to the connection you actually use.
The installer will not run
- Recheck that the download matches Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10 and the system’s 32-bit or 64-bit type.
- Download the package again from Epson’s NX420 support page if the file is incomplete or the download was interrupted.
- Read Epson’s description for the Printer Driver Security Support Tool v1.0.1.0, dated August 15, 2025, if Epson identifies it as relevant to your Windows edition or a printer-driver security issue. It is not a replacement for the normal printer and scanner packages.
Printing works but wireless scanning does not
Check that the scanner component and Event Manager are installed, then confirm the NX420 is selected in the scanning application. For network installations, rerun the Epson network setup and verify that the computer and printer remain on the same wireless network.

What the software controls
The printer driver translates Windows print jobs for the NX420. Status Monitor 3 reports printer status, while Event Manager connects hardware control-panel actions to software on the computer. EPSON Scan/TWAIN supplies the scanning interface used by compatible Windows applications. The brochure for the NX420 lists a maximum interpolated scanner resolution of 9600 × 9600 dpi and 48-bit color input with 24-bit output; those specifications describe the hardware and scanner software’s supported capabilities, not a promise that every application will expose every setting.
Safe-download checklist
- Use Epson’s official Stylus NX420 support page rather than a generic driver archive.
- Match the Windows release and architecture manually when detection is incorrect.
- Prefer the combo package for a complete Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 installation when Epson lists it for your system.
- Install EPSON Scan separately when scanning is absent.
- Install Event Manager for scans initiated from the NX420 control panel.
- For wireless use, install the network components and verify the printer and computer share a network.
- Keep the package version and date recorded if you later need to reinstall or troubleshoot.

For Windows 8, 8.1, and 10, start with Epson’s matching Drivers and Utilities Combo Package. For Windows 7 or a scanner-only repair, use the Epson scanner package listed for your architecture and add Event Manager when you need control-panel scanning. Confirm the Windows edition, bitness, and USB or wireless connection before installing; those three choices determine whether the NX420’s printer and scanner functions appear correctly.
