EPOMAKER GX1 Headset Review: Tinny Sound and Middling Software

The EPOMAKER GX1 advertises open-back design and three connection modes, but review coverage criticizes its tinny sound and middling software.

The EPOMAKER GX1 promises an open-back design, wireless flexibility and long battery life, but the review evidence points to a basic problem: its sound is described as tinny, while its software is judged middling. That makes it difficult to recommend on promise alone—especially if audio quality is your priority.

What is the EPOMAKER GX1?

The GX1 is an open-back gaming headset. EPOMAKER advertises 50 mm dynamic drivers, virtual 7.1 surround, RGB lighting, ENC microphones and three connection options: 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth and wired. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independently verified performance results. EPOMAKER’s product page lists a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response and approximate weight of 320 g.

The design’s open-back description is relevant to expectations: it is not a promise of isolation from surrounding sound. The available reviews supplied here do not establish how much sound leaks in or out, so treat the design label as a feature to consider rather than proof of a particular listening experience.

How does the GX1 sound?

The most consequential criticism is the sound. GamersExtra’s EPOMAKER GX1 review gives it 5.0/10 and characterizes the result as tinny. GamesRadar’s review excerpt also describes the audio as tinny. These are reviewers’ judgments; the available material does not provide measurements or enough detail to identify a specific frequency imbalance or reproduce their testing.

Razer BlackShark V2 X Xbox Gaming Headset, 3.5mm Audio Jack, Black | 50mm Drivers, Cardioid Mic, Lightweight, Comfortable Noise Isolating Earcups, for Xbox Series X, Series S, PS5, PC, Switch
  • TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
  • HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
  • ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
  • WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion

That distinction matters: the evidence supports saying reviewers found the sound disappointing, not that every listener will hear the same flaw or that a particular EQ adjustment will fix it. If you are considering the headset, sound quality is the main concern to weigh against its feature list.

What about the microphone and software?

Microphone

GamesRadar characterizes the microphone as muddy. EPOMAKER advertises ENC microphones, but that specification does not establish how clearly the GX1 sounds in calls or games. The available review excerpts do not include microphone measurements or detailed conditions, so the criticism should be read as a reviewer impression rather than a universal result. GamesRadar’s GX1 review is the source for that assessment.

Software

GamersExtra describes the software as middling. Its review excerpt says the software includes microphone-volume adjustment, selectable noise-reduction levels and Xear Magic Voice effects, but it does not explain the specific shortcomings behind that verdict. The feature list therefore tells you what controls are mentioned, not whether the software is intuitive or improves the headset’s sound.

Connection modes and console compatibility

Compatibility depends on how you connect. EPOMAKER lists 2.4 GHz support for PS5, PS4, PC, Mac and Nintendo Switch, while Xbox Series is listed for wired use only. The manufacturer says PS5 and PS4 do not support Bluetooth audio. Check the connection mode before buying rather than assuming every wireless option works with every console. EPOMAKER’s compatibility information gives the platform caveats.

Should you buy the EPOMAKER GX1?

The GX1’s advertised package is broad: open-back construction, three connection modes, RGB and a claimed long runtime. But the central review concern is not a missing feature—it is the reported listening experience. Tinny sound is the repeated criticism, and the available coverage also raises concerns about muddy microphone audio and middling software.

It is best approached cautiously if sound quality or clear voice chat is your priority. Its compatibility and battery claims may suit a buyer who specifically needs the supported connection mode, but the available evidence does not show that those features offset the sound and software criticisms. Compare the current price and check your platform’s connection requirements before choosing it.
