In Epic Seven, DPS heroes deal damage, supports help allies through healing or utility, tanks reduce or absorb incoming pressure, and debuffers hinder enemies. These are jobs a hero performs for a team—not fixed labels determined by the hero’s class. Many heroes contribute in more than one way, and the best mix depends on the fight.
What the four role labels mean
A team takes four heroes into battle. Each hero brings skills, gear, and an Artifact, so think about the contribution their kit makes to the team rather than relying on a single label. The game’s official descriptions emphasize building strategic battles by combining heroes, while its listed modes include both PvE and competitive play. Smilegate’s Epic Seven page and the Google Play listing provide that broader game context.

DPS: remove enemy health
DPS means damage per second, but in turn-based combat the practical role is simply the damage dealer: a hero whose main contribution is reducing enemy health and helping secure a win. A damage-focused hero may have useful secondary effects, but damage is the primary reason to bring them.
Support: enable allies
Support is a functional umbrella, not a class. A support may heal, cleanse harmful effects from allies, apply helpful buffs, protect teammates, or affect turn order. Some supports do several of these; others specialize in one. Their value can be substantial even when they deal little damage.

Tank: withstand or redirect pressure
A tank helps the team survive by absorbing, redirecting, or reducing incoming pressure, and may protect allies with defensive effects. “Tank” describes what the hero does for the group, not a guarantee that every hero of a particular class can fill that job.
Debuffer: hinder enemies
A debuffer applies harmful effects that weaken, damage, or control opponents. Examples include Defense Break, Attack down, Bleed, Stun, Provoke, and Silence. Some effects reduce enemy effectiveness; others can restrict what an enemy does.

Class and role are related, but not interchangeable
Epic Seven has six broad classes. A current overview from Hideout Guides’ beginner guide associates them with these general identities:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Class | Broad identity |
|---|---|
| Knight | Tanking and defensive utility |
| Warrior | Bruising: damage combined with survivability |
| Thief | Fast or evasive damage and speed control |
| Ranger | Precise, often critical damage |
| Mage | Burst or multi-hit damage |
| Soul Weaver | Healing and cleansing |
These are broad tendencies, not rules for every hero. A class can suggest what to look for, but the hero’s individual skills and your team’s needs determine their actual job. In particular, “support” is not another class name: it covers several forms of team utility that can appear in different kits.

Why heroes can fill more than one job
Role labels describe a hero’s main contribution, not every effect in their kit. A bruiser, for example, combines damage with the ability to survive pressure. Other heroes may pair damage with a debuff, or protection with turn manipulation. When a hero overlaps roles, identify the primary contribution first, then note the secondary benefit that matters to your plan.
Community effect references such as Epic Helper’s effects database illustrate the range of effects found in kits. They are useful for understanding effect types, but they do not make class names a definitive guide to a hero’s role.

Turn order, buffs, and debuffs shape a team’s plan
Heroes act according to Combat Readiness, and Speed affects how quickly they reach a turn. Skills can push allies forward or pull enemies back. That means an opener or turn manipulator can be valuable because of who acts when, even if raw damage is not their main contribution. A team plan should account for whether a hero needs to act before an ally or opponent to make their utility count.

Buffs strengthen or protect allies; examples include Attack up, Defense up, Immunity, Barrier, and Combat Readiness up. Debuffs hinder opponents and include effects such as Defense Break, Attack down, Bleed, Stun, Provoke, and Silence. These examples and the turn-order overview are summarized in Hideout Guides’ beginner guide.

Debuffs are not guaranteed to land. According to that guide, success depends on the attacker’s Effectiveness against the target’s Effect Resistance, with a maximum 85% chance to apply a debuff and at least a 15% chance for the target to resist. Treat control and weakening effects as a chance to improve a plan, not as certainty.

Rather than filling a universal checklist of one hero per role, start with what the fight requires. The official game materials describe strategic hero combinations across PvE and competitive modes, not one fixed role recipe. Use questions like these to shape a team:
- Can the team finish the target? Bring enough damage for the win condition.
- Can it survive the incoming pressure? Consider healing, cleansing, defensive buffs, or a hero that absorbs or redirects attacks.
- Is there an enemy mechanic to answer? A debuff, control effect, or turn-order tool may matter more than adding another source of damage.
- Does the plan depend on acting first? Account for Speed, Combat Readiness effects, and the order in which allies need to use their skills.
- How reliable is the key effect? If the plan relies on a debuff, remember that Effectiveness and Effect Resistance matter and that resistance remains possible.
The right answer can change between a PvE encounter and a competitive match, or between two fights in the same mode. Judge each hero by the job their kit performs in the specific lineup, not by a class label alone.
A quick way to classify a hero
- Find the main contribution. Does the hero mainly deal damage, sustain or protect allies, or hinder enemies?
- Check the effects that support that job. Look for healing, cleansing, buffs, defensive tools, debuffs, or turn-order changes.
- Consider what the team needs. A secondary effect may be the reason to bring the hero in a particular fight.
- Account for timing and reliability. Decide whether the hero must act before another unit, and whether a debuff-dependent plan can tolerate a resisted effect.
This approach gives a more useful answer than asking whether a hero is simply “a Knight” or “a support.” Class offers a broad clue; skills and team context establish the role.
