Its mature library, documented Steam Cloud synchronization and clear 14-day/under-two-hours refund rule make buying and playing across computers comparatively predictable. The Epic Games Store is worth keeping installed for weekly free games, Epic-only releases, regional pricing or payment options, Epic Rewards and its developer-focused revenue terms. For many players, the practical answer is not choosing one exclusively: use Steam as the primary library and add Epic when a specific game, price or promotion justifies it.
Steam and Epic at a glance
Both services install and update PC games, authenticate ownership and provide social features, but they optimize for different priorities. Steam emphasizes a unified, mature library and a large community ecosystem. Epic emphasizes free-game retention, selected exclusives, account reach, promotions and a more generous published revenue split for developers.

Catalog, exclusives and where a game launches
Steam’s breadth and established ecosystem
Steam’s main advantage is not one feature but the way its catalog, reviews, discussion pages, achievements, controller configuration and community-created content fit together. A game that supports Steam Cloud, Workshop content or other Steam services can be managed from the same client as the rest of your library. That consistency matters if you regularly move between a desktop, laptop or supported handheld.

Epic exclusives and a growing catalog
Epic is the only practical choice when a game is released exclusively on its store for a period, when the publisher sells a product there but not on Steam, or when an existing Epic account is required for a particular ecosystem. Epic’s 2025 review, published in 2026, reported more than 6,000 games and 317 million-plus total PC players. Those are company-reported platform totals, not a guarantee that every genre or niche has the same depth as Steam.
Epic also reported that players spent 2.78 billion hours in third-party games. That figure indicates meaningful activity beyond Epic’s own flagship titles, but it does not measure how active an individual game’s community is. For multiplayer games, inspect the current player base, cross-play support and account requirements before choosing a store.
Price, coupons, rewards and free games
Compare the checkout total, not the headline price
The same game can have different regional prices, taxes, payment fees, coupon eligibility or promotional discounts in each store. Compare the final checkout amount in your currency, including any expansion bundle or edition differences. A cheaper base game is not a saving if the other store’s edition includes content you would otherwise purchase separately.
Epic highlights regional pricing and payment support, Epic Rewards and store promotions as reasons to buy there. The value depends on your country, the game, the promotion’s dates and the account terms. Treat a reward balance or coupon as a discount on a future eligible purchase, not as cash that can be withdrawn or transferred.
Why Epic’s free-game program changes the calculation
Epic says games claimed through its Free Games Program remain in the claimant’s library. You must complete the claim while the promotion is active; installing the game is not required at that moment. Epic’s 2025 review reported 662 million titles claimed through the program. This makes an Epic account useful even for someone who buys most premium games elsewhere: claim a title once and it remains associated with that account under the program’s terms.

Free claims have practical limits. They are tied to the account that claimed them, may require the Epic launcher or another publisher account to run, and do not create a transferable license for another person. Keep your account secure and use the same sign-in method when moving to a new PC.
Cloud saves and playing on more than one computer
How Steam Cloud works
Valve describes Steam Cloud as a remote file-storage system for game files. For a supported title, the client uploads designated saves and downloads them on another computer signed in to the same Steam account. This is the simplest route to continuing a campaign on a desktop after playing on a laptop.
Recommended Free Tools
Steam Cloud is configured per game, so it is not universal. A developer may not implement it, may synchronize only certain files, or may configure it in a way that does not cover mods and local settings. Before switching devices, let the game exit normally and wait for Steam to finish synchronization. If the client presents a conflict, compare timestamps and choose the newer known-good save rather than blindly overwriting files.
Epic and game-specific save behavior
Do not assume that buying the Epic version provides the same save continuity as a Steam purchase. Cloud-save support depends on the game and its implementation. Some titles use Epic’s services, some use a publisher account, and some keep saves only on the local computer. Look for the game’s cloud-save indication and read its support notes before relying on a second device.
When a title has no reliable cloud synchronization, copy the save folder manually only if the developer documents its location and format. Close the game first, keep an untouched backup, and avoid mixing saves created by different versions or mods. A launcher cannot reconstruct a save that the game never uploaded.

Refunds and purchase risk
Steam’s published standard
Steam says you can request a refund for nearly any purchase. Its standard rule for games is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. After approval, refunds are generally issued within a week, although the payment provider can affect when the money appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe rule is a useful safety net for testing performance, controls or compatibility, but it is not an unlimited trial. Playtime can include time spent troubleshooting, and exceptions or special products can have different conditions. Submit the request through Steam Support with the purchase selected; explain the problem accurately and keep expectations within the published criteria.
Checking Epic before you buy
Epic’s eligibility rules can vary by product, region and purchase method. Because the exact terms are the controlling document, open the current refund policy from the Epic account or store support pages before checkout, especially for a pre-order, consumable, bundle or game that launches through another service. Do not infer that an Epic purchase automatically receives Steam’s 14-day/two-hour treatment.
Family access, accounts and ownership
Epic’s limitation
Epic does not offer account-to-account library sharing or family sharing. A game claimed or purchased on one Epic account remains tied to that account. Separate household users should plan on separate purchases where the game’s license requires it, and they should not share credentials.
Steam’s more developed library tools
Steam has a mature library workflow and family-oriented sharing tooling, which can make one household easier to manage than an Epic-only setup. Sharing availability, simultaneous use, account restrictions and individual game support can change, so verify the current Steam settings and the specific game’s eligibility before planning a household library around it. Sharing does not turn one purchase into multiple independent licenses.

Community, mods and social features
Steam’s established community layer
Steam’s long-running community ecosystem is a major reason players stay. Depending on the title, you may find discussion hubs, user reviews, guides, achievements, friends activity, controller profiles and official or community mod distribution in one place. Workshop support is decided by each developer; a game without Workshop integration will not gain it merely because it is sold on Steam.
Epic’s current tools and announced work
Epic has been expanding profiles, community spaces, private messaging, voice chat and game-independent parties. Its 2025 review also described launcher architecture work, a Fortnite-linked marketing program and a planned cross-platform library and regional-storefront workstream for 2026. These statements describe announced plans, not features that every account can necessarily use today. Confirm that a needed social or library function is live in your client and supported by the game.
Operating systems, controllers and handheld PCs
Launcher choice should follow the device on which you actually play. Steam’s controller configuration and handheld integration are especially mature, making it the lower-friction option for players who alternate between a desktop and a supported handheld PC. Epic games can also run on compatible PC hardware, but an extra launcher, publisher login or anti-cheat requirement can affect the experience.
Check the game’s listed operating-system requirements, graphics API, anti-cheat support and controller notes for your exact device. A launcher’s compatibility does not guarantee that a particular game supports Linux, a handheld’s control layout, offline play or suspend-and-resume behavior. For either store, install a small test game first if your device has unusual drivers or limited storage.
Why developer economics affect store availability
Epic currently advertises 100% of the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product, per year, then a standard 88%/12% model. It also advertises an audience of more than 295 million users. These terms can give a developer a reason to launch on Epic, fund a timed exclusive, or keep a game’s price competitive there. They do not prove that a particular game will be cheaper, better supported or available forever.

Epic’s 2025 review reported $1.16 billion in PC spending and 78 million monthly active PC users. Those figures, like the player and claim totals, are Epic’s own platform metrics. A developer may still choose Steam for its community tools, existing audience, mod workflow or support infrastructure. Store economics explain why catalogs differ; they are not a direct quality score for either launcher.
Which launcher should you choose?
Choose Steam first when
- You want one primary library with mature discovery, community and controller workflows.
- You expect to move supported games between computers and want the clearest documented cloud-save and refund process.
- You rely on community guides, Workshop content or a large existing Steam collection.
- You are buying a game with a strong Steam community and no meaningful Epic-specific discount or feature.
Choose Epic for a particular purchase when
- The game is Epic-only or launches there first.
- Epic’s final regional price, payment method, coupon or Rewards value is lower for your account.
- You want to claim a current free game and keep it in your library.
- The developer’s Epic launch includes a feature, promotion or account integration you specifically need.
Keep both installed when
- Your free-game claims, multiplayer friends or existing purchases are split between the services.
- You play Epic exclusives but want Steam for most purchases and handheld use.
- You are willing to manage two update queues, sign-ins and save systems in exchange for broader choice.
A low-risk buying process
- Identify the exact edition. Compare the base game, deluxe content, season passes, soundtrack and any publisher account requirement in both stores.
- Check device compatibility. Confirm operating-system support, storage, controller behavior, anti-cheat and whether another launcher starts after purchase.
- Compare the final regional total. Include tax, active coupons, Epic Rewards eligibility and the value of any included content.
- Verify saves. Look for Steam Cloud or Epic/game-specific cloud support and read the developer’s notes if you will use more than one PC.
- Read the applicable refund rule. Steam’s standard is 14 days and under two hours; for Epic, check the current product and regional terms before paying.
- Buy on the account you will keep. Licenses and free claims are generally account-bound, and Epic does not provide family or account-to-account library sharing.
- After installation, test before investing hours. Launch once, sign in to required publisher services, create a small save, exit normally and confirm synchronization before relying on the second device.
Common problems and practical fixes
A save is missing on the new PC
Confirm that both computers use the same launcher and account, that cloud synchronization completed after the last session, and that the game actually supports cloud saves. Resolve any file-conflict prompt using the newest verified save. If the title has no cloud support, restore the developer-documented local save folder from your backup.
The game starts another launcher
Some PC games require a publisher account or a second client regardless of where you bought them. Install the required component, use the same linked account on both computers and check whether offline play is supported. Buying through Steam does not remove a game’s external account requirement, and buying through Epic does not guarantee a single-client experience.
A free Epic game cannot be found
Sign in to the account that claimed it and open the library rather than searching the store’s sale page. Check whether the promotion was actually completed, whether the title is hidden by a filter and whether the game requires a separate publisher account. Claimed titles remain associated with the claiming account; they cannot be moved to another one.
A mod or controller profile does not work
Confirm that the specific game supports the mod system or controller configuration you are using. Updates can break community content, and a game launched through another client may bypass Steam’s overlay or profile. Test with the base game, then re-enable mods one at a time so you can identify the incompatible component.
Bottom line for 2026
Use Steam as the anchor for a new PC library when you value predictable refunds, supported cloud saves, mature community features and handheld-friendly management. Keep an Epic account active because its free games remain claimable, its catalog includes Epic-only releases and its regional promotions or Rewards can make a specific purchase better. Buying on the store that best supports the particular game, device and account you will use is more important than forcing every title into one launcher.
