If a WhatsApp guest call link will not open or connect, the cause is usually identifiable from the message you see. An old link may have expired after 30 days without use, the creator may have revoked it or blocked a participant, approval may be holding you in a waiting room, or guest calling may not yet be available on that account or browser. The fastest remedy is for the WhatsApp account holder to create a fresh link, while the guest checks the browser, name entry and approval status.
Start with the message on screen
Do not treat every failed invitation as the same problem. The wording and screen state indicate who can fix it. Use this table before changing settings:

Only the account holder who created the call link can change its invitation, blocking and approval controls. A guest cannot repair a revoked link or bypass a creator’s block.
Fix an expired or revoked WhatsApp call link
Why the link stops working
WhatsApp’s Help Center states that call links expire when they have been unused for 30 days. The same guidance says WhatsApp can revoke links for privacy and security reasons. Expiration is based on lack of use, not simply the date on which the link was first shared. A link that worked previously can therefore become unusable if nobody used it during that period, and a link can also stop working after a security revocation.

There is no guest-side setting that extends the life of an expired or revoked invitation. Reopening the same URL, reinstalling the app or clearing a browser tab will not make that invitation valid again.
Create a replacement link
The person who owns the WhatsApp account that created the invitation should make a new one:
- Open WhatsApp and go to the Calls tab.
- Choose New call link.
- Select Voice or Video.
- Copy the newly generated URL or share it through the desired channel.
Every new call link is different and secure. Send the new URL rather than forwarding the old invitation from a previous meeting, calendar event or chat. If several people were given the old link, notify them that the original has been replaced.

Open the new URL in the same way the guest plans to join. If the new page loads and offers a name field or join control, the earlier invitation was the problem. If the new URL produces the same failure, continue with the blocked-participant and rollout checks below; repeatedly generating links will not solve a participant-status restriction or an unavailable feature.

Resolve “Unable to connect” after removal or blocking
What the message means
WhatsApp documents a specific case in which someone removed or blocked during a call sees Unable to connect when trying to rejoin. Its Help Center also says contacts blocked by the call-link creator cannot join using that link. The message is therefore not a normal network timeout when it appears after the creator removed or blocked you.
Blocking is controlled by the creator, not by the guest’s phone, browser or WhatsApp installation. A guest cannot override it by opening the invitation in another browser, using a different device or asking another participant to forward the same URL.
What the creator must check
- Ask whether your account or contact was blocked for the call.
- Ask whether you were removed from an active call and are attempting to return to that same call.
- If the block was accidental, have the creator remove it and send a fresh invitation when appropriate.
- If the creator does not want to change the block, do not keep retrying the old link; it will continue to reject that participant.
A new invitation is useful only after the creator has confirmed that the intended participant is permitted to join. Creating a new URL does not grant access to someone who remains blocked.

Get past the approval waiting room
Why you are waiting
Call links can require the creator to approve entrants. With Require approval to join enabled, a guest is placed in a waiting room instead of entering immediately. The waiting state means the invitation is being recognized; it does not by itself indicate that the URL is expired or invalid.

What the guest should do
- Leave the invitation page open and keep the browser session active.
- Make sure the name you entered identifies you clearly to the host.
- Tell the creator that your join request is waiting.
- Do not repeatedly refresh unless the page has actually failed; a refresh can discard the current request in some browser states.
Only the creator sees approval requests. The creator can allow an individual, deny an individual or approve everyone, depending on the controls shown in WhatsApp. Once admitted, the guest enters the call normally.
If your request was denied
WhatsApp says a guest who was denied can rejoin the waiting room if the denial was a mistake. Open the link again and submit another request, then contact the creator so the second request is recognized. A denial is different from a block: denial concerns that entry request, while a block prevents the blocked contact from joining through the link.
Join without a WhatsApp account
What guest calling supports
Meta’s October 14, 2026 announcement says guest calling lets someone join a WhatsApp call even without a WhatsApp account. The guest opens the call link in a computer browser, types a name and can join one-to-one or group calls with up to 32 people once the host admits them.
This is an invitation to participate, not an account-creation route. Only someone with a WhatsApp account can create a call link. A guest without an account cannot generate one for other people.

Correct join sequence
- Use a computer and open the complete call-link URL in a current web browser.
- When prompted, type the name you want the host to see.
- Submit the request to join.
- Remain on the page while the host approves you.
- After admission, allow the browser’s microphone or camera permission if you intend to use voice or video.
Guest permissions are intentionally narrower than those of an account holder. Meta says guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send WhatsApp messages or add people directly to the call. If you need those functions, you need the appropriate WhatsApp account and permissions rather than a guest link.
Phone versus computer
The official guest-calling description specifically places the no-account join flow in a computer browser. If a phone opens a page that only offers an app download, does not show the name field or loops back to an app, switch to a computer browser for the guest attempt. The available official announcements do not publish a complete list of supported phone browsers or operating-system versions, so a phone-only failure should not be interpreted as proof that the invitation itself is invalid.
Check gradual rollout and browser availability
Why a valid link may show no guest interface
Meta’s July 28, 2026 update describes WhatsApp Web calling directly in a browser without an app download and approval-enabled links with a waiting room. It also says these capabilities are rolling out gradually. Meta’s October 14, 2026 guest-calling announcement describes the account-free browser flow, but gradual deployment means two otherwise similar accounts may not display the same controls at the same time.

Rollout troubleshooting
- Update WhatsApp on the host’s device to the latest version offered for that device.
- On the guest’s computer, retry the complete URL in a current browser rather than an old embedded browser inside another app.
- Copy the URL again from the creator’s WhatsApp message and paste it directly into the browser address bar; avoid a truncated link copied from a notification preview.
- Ask the host to confirm that guest calling or web calling is visible on the account that created the link.
- If the feature is still absent, have the account holder create a new link and test it with a browser-based guest.
Updating and retrying can rule out a stale client, but they cannot force a feature that has not yet been enabled for the account. In that situation, the host must wait for availability or use a joining method already supported by the account.

- Check whether the link was unused for 30 days.
- Ask the account holder whether WhatsApp revoked it for privacy or security.
- Generate a new voice or video link from Calls > New call link.
- Share only the new URL.
“Unable to connect”
- Ask the creator whether you were removed or blocked.
- Have the creator remove an accidental block before testing again.
- If you are not permitted to join, another browser, device or copy of the link will not bypass the restriction.
Waiting for approval
- Keep the page open.
- Contact the creator and ask them to review the waiting-room request.
- If denied by mistake, rejoin the waiting room and notify the creator.
No account or no guest controls
- Use a computer browser and enter a display name.
- Update WhatsApp on the host side.
- Retry in a current browser.
- Ask the host to verify that the gradual rollout has reached the account.
When a new link still fails
Separate link validity from access permission
A replacement URL tests whether the old invitation expired or was revoked. It does not test every other condition. If the fresh link opens but the guest receives Unable to connect, investigate blocking or removal. If it opens to a waiting room, approval is working and the host must admit the guest. If it opens but has no name field or guest controls, investigate browser and rollout availability.
Confirm the exact participant and host
Have the account holder who generated the URL perform the checks. A different participant may be unable to see approval requests or blocking controls. Confirm that the person expecting to join is the same person the creator intended to invite, especially when several invitations were shared in a group chat.

- Do not infer that a link is expired solely because the host is not currently in the call.
- Do not infer that a waiting room is a connection failure; it is expected when approval is required.
- Do not infer that a missing mobile-app prompt proves the URL is broken when the account-free flow is intended for a computer browser.
- Do not keep distributing a link after the creator has replaced it.
Participant limits and guest restrictions
Meta’s October 14, 2026 announcement says guests can join one-to-one and group calls with up to 32 people once admitted by the host. That is the published limit for the guest-calling scenario; it does not establish a larger capacity for other WhatsApp call types.
Guests do not receive the full set of account-holder capabilities. They cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages or add people directly to the call. These restrictions are normal for guest participation and are not evidence that the invitation failed.
What the official information does not specify
The current official guidance establishes the 30-day unused-link expiry, possible privacy or security revocation, blocking behavior, approval waiting rooms, browser-based guest joining and the limit of up to 32 participants. It does not publish independent failure-rate data, a guaranteed regional availability list or exact browser-version requirements for every guest-calling scenario.
For that reason, troubleshooting should use observable behavior rather than an assumed country list or a made-up minimum browser version. If a valid-looking link lacks the expected interface after updating and trying a current computer browser, the most defensible explanation is that the gradual rollout or account availability has not enabled the feature yet.

- For an account-free join, use a computer browser and enter a recognizable name.
- Keep the page open while awaiting approval.
- If you see “Unable to connect,” ask about removal or blocking instead of repeatedly refreshing.
- If no guest controls appear, update the host’s WhatsApp and retry in a current browser.
- Remember that guest access does not include phone-number visibility, WhatsApp messaging or adding participants.
