A slow Epic Games Launcher is usually caused by one of five things: an Epic service incident, a damaged web cache, unstable Wi‑Fi, a DNS or proxy problem, or local software competing with the launcher. Start with Epic’s live status page, then work through the reversible fixes in order. Do not reinstall first: a reinstall cannot repair an Epic outage and is unnecessary when clearing the cache or correcting the connection solves the problem.
This guide covers slow library loading, sluggish store pages, and downloads that crawl even when other internet activity appears fast. The steps apply mainly to Windows and macOS; where the menus differ, the platform is identified.

1. Check whether Epic is having an outage
Open the Epic Games Status page before changing anything on your computer. Check the entries for Epic Games Store login, download and installation services, and store browsing. Scheduled maintenance can also affect a service without indicating a fault in your installation.

Wait for the incident to be resolved, then restart the launcher. Epic notes that an issue caused by an outage or system-wide failure may be fixed only when the outage ends.

Status is a live signal, not a promise about future performance. Recheck the page if the launcher was working earlier and suddenly became slow, or if several devices show the same Epic problem.
2. Identify what “slow” means
Different symptoms point to different causes. Let the symptom determine which branch to try first.

3. Clear Epic Games Launcher’s web cache
Epic says clearing the cache can resolve display issues and errors that stop the launcher or games from working correctly. Close the launcher completely before deleting its files. If its icon remains in the notification area, right-click it and choose the exit or quit command.

Windows
- Exit Epic Games Launcher.
- Press
Windows+Rto open the Run dialog. - Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncher, thenSaved. - Delete
webcache. If present, also deletewebcache_4147andwebcache_4430. - Start the launcher again and allow it time to rebuild its interface data.
Delete only those cache folders, not the entire Saved folder. The first launch after cleanup may take longer while fresh files are created.
macOS
- Quit Epic Games Launcher.
- In Finder, choose Go and then Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher. - Move the
webcachefolder to the Trash. - Empty the Trash.
- Relaunch Epic Games Launcher.
If the folder is not present, do not create a replacement manually. Continue with the network and software checks below.
4. Use a wired connection to separate Wi‑Fi from Epic
Epic’s support guidance is direct: “Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi‑Fi.” Connect the computer to the router with an Ethernet cable, restart the launcher, and compare library loading and download behavior under the same conditions.

A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical test accessory because it removes wireless signal strength, channel congestion, and roaming from the test. It is not a guaranteed cure: a cable cannot fix an Epic outage, a DNS failure, a proxy, a damaged cache, or a slow route beyond your home network. If wired performance is normal while Wi‑Fi remains slow, investigate the wireless network rather than repeatedly reinstalling the launcher.
If you cannot run Ethernet
- Move the computer closer to the access point and avoid testing through a weak extender link.
- Pause other large transfers on the same network.
- Try a phone hotspot or another trusted connection for a short comparison. Epic specifically recommends trying another internet connection.
Use the alternate connection as a diagnosis, not as a permanent recommendation. If Epic works normally there, the original router, wireless path, DNS service, or internet provider is the more likely cause.
5. Remove Epic’s download speed limit
The launcher can be configured to cap downloads even when your internet service is fast. Open Epic Games Launcher’s Settings and locate the download section. Turn off the download-speed limit or throttle option, apply the change, and restart the download.
The exact wording can vary between launcher releases. Look for a setting that limits, throttles, or caps download bandwidth; a nonzero cap can make a healthy connection appear slow. Test one download after changing it instead of changing several unrelated settings at once.
6. Flush DNS and test a different resolver
DNS translates Epic’s service names into network addresses. A stale or failing resolver can make login, store browsing, and downloads start slowly even when a generic speed test looks fine.

- Open Command Prompt as a normal user.
- Run
ipconfig /flushdns. - Wait for the confirmation message, then restart Epic Games Launcher.
If the command reports an error, open Command Prompt with administrator rights and run it again.

Try a public DNS service
Change DNS in the operating system’s network settings to a reputable public resolver, using the addresses published by that resolver. On Windows, open Settings, choose Network & internet, select the active connection, edit DNS settings, and enter the resolver addresses. On macOS, open System Settings, choose Network, select the active interface, open its details, choose DNS, and add the resolver addresses.
Record the original DNS entries before changing them. If the alternate resolver does not help, restore the original values; DNS changes affect every application on the computer, not only Epic.
7. Disable proxy servers temporarily
A proxy can delay or block authentication and content requests. Disable it for a controlled test, then relaunch Epic.

- Open Settings and choose Network & internet.
- Select Proxy.
- Turn off a manually configured proxy and any automatic configuration that you do not recognize.
- Restart the launcher and test the library and a download.
macOS
- Open System Settings and choose Network.
- Select the active connection and open its details.
- Open the Proxies section.
- Clear a proxy that is not required for your network, save the change, and relaunch Epic.
Do not disable a proxy required by an employer or school without permission. If Epic only works when that proxy is bypassed, the network administrator needs to allow the launcher’s required traffic.
8. Check the launcher and computer software
Once the connection and cache have been tested, work through local software causes. These checks are reversible and should come before reinstalling.
Install launcher updates
Open the launcher’s settings or update prompt and allow any available Epic Games Launcher update to finish. Restart after updating. A mismatch between an older client and current store services can affect sign-in, browsing, or downloads.

Verify system requirements
Confirm that the computer meets the launcher’s current system requirements for its operating system, available storage, and graphics hardware. Requirements can change with operating-system releases and launcher versions, so use Epic’s current support information for the edition installed on your machine.
Update the graphics driver
Install the latest driver supplied for the computer’s graphics hardware, then restart the operating system. A driver problem can make the launcher interface render slowly even when network activity is normal.
Test administrator mode
On Windows, right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut or executable, open Properties, choose Compatibility, and select Run this program as an administrator for a test. If the launcher behaves differently, permissions or security software may be interfering. Permanent administrator mode is not automatically safer; use it only when it resolves a specific permissions problem.
Disable fullscreen optimization where relevant
For Windows systems showing sluggish or unstable rendering, open the launcher or affected game executable’s Properties, select Compatibility, and test Disable fullscreen optimizations. This setting targets display behavior; it will not repair an outage or a slow network path.
Close background applications
Quit overlays, download managers, cloud-synchronization tools, security scans, and other applications that use CPU, disk, or bandwidth. Test again with only the launcher running. Re-enable applications one at a time if the slowdown disappears so you can identify the conflict instead of leaving unrelated protections disabled.
9. A controlled troubleshooting sequence
Changing everything at once makes the result impossible to interpret. Use this order and test after each major change.

- Check the live Epic status page and note any incident or maintenance entry.
- Close and relaunch the launcher once to rule out a transient process problem.
- Clear the platform-appropriate web cache.
- Test one download or library load on wired Ethernet, if available.
- Confirm that the launcher’s download limit is disabled.
- Try another internet connection.
- Flush DNS, then test a different public resolver if the symptom points to name resolution.
- Disable an unnecessary proxy for a controlled test.
- Update the launcher, graphics driver, and operating system as appropriate; then close competing background applications.
- Use administrator mode or disable fullscreen optimization only when the symptom is local rendering or permissions trouble.
- Reinstall the launcher only after the preceding checks fail and the status page shows no relevant outage.
Keep notes about which test changed the symptom. “Fast on another connection” points toward the original network; “fast after cache deletion” points toward local launcher data; “still slow everywhere during an incident” points toward Epic’s service.
10. Reinstall only as a last resort
Reinstallation removes and replaces launcher program files, but it is a broad change compared with deleting the web cache or correcting a network setting. Before starting, ensure you can sign in again and that you understand where your installed games and downloaded content are stored. Close the launcher, uninstall it using the operating system’s normal app-removal process, restart the computer, download the current installer from Epic’s official site, and install it again.
If a fresh installation is still slow while the status page is healthy, repeat the wired-versus-Wi‑Fi and alternate-connection tests. A reinstall does not repair a failing router, DNS resolver, proxy, or internet route.
11. Compare the fixes by cause and reversibility

12. What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Epic’s support guidance does not publish a guaranteed download-speed increase, success percentage, or benchmark for any of these steps. Your result depends on the service state, route to Epic, Wi‑Fi conditions, DNS provider, computer workload, and launcher version. Treat each change as a diagnostic test rather than a promise of a particular number.
A status page showing normal operation means the service is reporting healthy at that moment; it does not prove that your ISP route, DNS resolver, or local installation is healthy. Conversely, a reported incident explains why local fixes may appear ineffective until the incident is resolved.
