Enterprise networking services are the connectivity and network-operating capabilities organizations use to connect people, devices, and applications across offices, wide-area networks, data centers, and cloud environments. They may include internet access, private connectivity, wireless networking, security, monitoring, and ongoing network management, delivered by an internal IT team, a service provider, or a cloud-based model.
What do enterprise networking services cover?
The term describes a portfolio of connected capabilities, not one device or internet circuit. An enterprise network typically spans three related domains: campus and branch access, data-center and hybrid-cloud networking, and wide-area networking. Each serves a different connectivity need.

- Campus, branch, and IoT connectivity: Provides fixed or wireless access for users, devices, and connected equipment at offices and other sites.
- WAN connectivity: Links offices, branches, remote employees, suppliers, data centers, and cloud resources across geographic distances.
- Data-center and hybrid-cloud networking: Connects applications, workloads, and data within data centers and across cloud environments.
Across these domains, services may include internet and cloud access, private or virtual connectivity, traffic routing, wireless access, monitoring, policy enforcement, security controls, and operational support. The precise package depends on the organization and provider.
What does a provider or IT team actually do?
Networking services can combine physical infrastructure with software and operational work. Routers and edge platforms connect campus, branch, and colocation sites to internet and public-cloud resources. Depending on the deployment, links may use MPLS, broadband, cellular, or software-defined cloud interconnect. Wireless LAN controllers manage access points, and a cellular gateway can enable a router or edge platform to use 4G or 5G connectivity.

Security-related functions may include identifying and verifying devices, authentication, access controls, segmentation, monitoring, and device or account management.
How do WAN, SD-WAN, SASE, NaaS, and CDN differ?
These terms describe related but distinct parts of the networking landscape. They should not be used as synonyms for the full set of enterprise networking services.

| Term | What it means | How it relates to enterprise networking |
|---|---|---|
| WAN | A network that connects multiple networks across a broad geographic area. | Provides connectivity among sites, remote users, data centers, and other destinations. |
| SD-WAN | An approach to deploying and managing WAN architectures with virtualization, application-level policies, overlays, and devices or software. | Can be one way to build and operate an enterprise WAN; it is not the name for all enterprise networking services. |
| SASE | An architecture that combines SD-WAN capabilities with cloud-native security functions. | Supports secure access to applications across distributed environments. |
| NaaS | A cloud-based model for consuming network operations without owning, building, or maintaining the infrastructure. | Describes a service and consumption model, rather than a network architecture like SASE. |
| CDN | A distributed system of servers and storage that replicates content closer to users. | Can improve content delivery and include other network services, but is not the whole of enterprise networking. |
Who operates the network?
Responsibility can stay with an organization’s internal IT team, be assigned to a provider, or be split between them. A provider may supply basic connectivity, such as a leased line, or take on more advanced managed services. The label managed service therefore says something about who operates particular functions, not necessarily which technologies or locations are included.

Likewise, consuming networking as a cloud service does not automatically mean every network function is outsourced. The service description and contract should specify what the provider operates, what the organization retains, and how support and escalation work.

How should an organization evaluate its options?
Start with the locations, people, applications, and cloud destinations the network must serve. Then compare service proposals against concrete operational needs rather than relying on labels such as managed, SD-WAN, or cloud networking.
- Define coverage: List offices, branches, remote users, devices, data centers, and cloud destinations in scope.
- Identify connectivity needs: Confirm which internet, private, wireless, cellular, and cloud connections are required.
- Set performance and support expectations: Check availability, performance, support hours, response commitments, and how each is measured. Treat commitments as specific to the proposed service and contract.
- Specify security requirements: Document identity and authentication needs, access controls, segmentation, and monitoring expectations.
- Assign operational responsibility: Determine who provisions, configures, monitors, troubleshoots, and changes each part of the service.
- Plan for change and cost: Understand how capacity scales, what triggers additional charges, and the contract terms for changes or termination.
These criteria are practical ways to make proposals comparable; they are not a universal scoring standard. Availability, scalability, security, user experience, and manageability are useful goals, but the actual commitments depend on the service design and contract.

Why there is no single definition of the service package
Organizations differ in the sites they operate, the applications they run, and the amount of network work they want to manage themselves. One service may focus on connecting branch offices; another may include cloud access, security functions, and ongoing monitoring. Cisco’s educational descriptions are useful for defining the network domains and concepts, but the contents of any particular provider’s offer must be established from that provider’s service description and contract.
