If Enshrouded settings keep reverting or appear to be ignored, stop the dedicated-server process, edit the enshrouded_server.json located beside the executable that actually runs, set "gameSettingsPreset": "Custom", check every key and value for valid JSON, save, and restart the server. Settings are read at startup; changing the file while the process is running can be overwritten when the server shuts down.

The reliable fix, in the correct order
Use this sequence for a self-hosted Windows dedicated server. The order matters because the running process can rewrite its configuration, and a named preset can take precedence over individual gameplay values.

- Stop the dedicated server completely. Close the server console with its normal shutdown command, or stop the process from the service or hosting control that launched it. Do not edit while the executable is still running.
- Locate the active configuration. Open the
enshrouded_server.jsonin the same folder as the dedicated-server executable that your service starts. Do not assume a backup, an old installation, or a panel template is the file in use. - Choose the custom preset. Set
"gameSettingsPreset": "Custom"before changing individual gameplay or difficulty entries. A named preset supplies its own overall mode and can make manual values look as if they were ignored. - Edit only supported keys and values. Preserve quotation marks, commas, braces, spelling, capitalization, and the value format expected by the server version. Do not add settings copied from an unrelated version or mod.
- Save the file while the process is stopped. Keep a backup of the last working file, especially if it contains a server password or other custom values.
- Start the same executable again. Difficulty and gameplay settings are loaded during startup, not applied to an already-running session. Join only after the server has finished starting.
Keen Games states in the July 29, 2024 Back to the Shroud update that “Difficulty settings can not be changed while playing: you will need to restart the server to change them.” That restart is part of the configuration change, not an optional final step.
What the active configuration file is
The executable-created file is authoritative
Keen’s installation guidance describes enshrouded_server.json as the file created after the dedicated-server executable has been started once. It is edited with a text editor and sits beside that executable. The exact parent directory depends on where you installed or unpacked the server, so a universal path is less useful than checking the executable’s actual location.

If you run more than one copy of the server, each copy can have its own JSON file. The file in an unused download directory will have no effect, even if it contains the settings you want. Check the shortcut, scheduled task, service definition, script, or panel entry that starts the server and follow that launch path to its executable.
How to identify the copy that is really running
- Stop the server and note which console, service, or panel reports the shutdown.
- Open the directory containing the executable named by that launch method.
- Confirm that the JSON file is in that same directory, rather than in a backup folder or a template directory.
- After saving a change, check the file’s modified time and the startup output from that executable. If another copy starts, its own configuration will be read instead.
A hosting panel may expose a text editor while copying values into a template or regenerating files during deployment. In that situation, the panel’s documented configuration path is the authority; editing an unrelated local copy will not persist.

The process overwrote your edit
The server owns the configuration while it is running. An edit made in a text editor can appear to save successfully, yet the shutdown routine can write the in-memory configuration back to disk. The result is a file that looks unchanged after the restart, leading to the mistaken conclusion that the key is unsupported. Stopping first removes that race: the file on disk is changed before the next startup reads it.
A preset is overriding the manual value
The update that introduced presets also exposed individual gameplay settings. A named preset represents a complete mode, so it can override or replace the individual choices you expected to control. Set the preset to Custom whenever you need per-setting control. Keep the spelling and capitalization exactly as shown; custom, an extra space, or a different label is not the same value.
You edited a different file
Multiple installs are common after an update, a migration, or an attempted repair. A backup file, a downloaded example, and a panel’s staging template can all contain plausible JSON while the live executable reads another copy. Use the launch configuration as your map, and make one small, identifiable change only in the file beside that executable. If the startup output and file timestamp do not line up, stop and resolve the path mismatch before changing more values.

The JSON is syntactically valid-looking but not valid
JSON is strict. A missing comma, an extra comma, a curly quotation mark from a word processor, an unmatched brace, or an unquoted string can stop the server from booting. A correctly shaped JSON value can still be rejected if the server does not support that key or if the value is outside the allowed range or enum for your version.
Keen Games Support warns that invalid text prevents the server from booting and reports the incorrectly entered value in the command window. The published wording says “vale” rather than “value”; the practical instruction is unchanged: keep the console visible, read the named entry, fix that entry, and start again.
The generated file is stale or damaged
Keen’s support guidance recommends deleting an incorrectly updated file so it can be freshly created at the next startup. Treat that as a recovery operation, not a first choice. Stop the server, copy the existing JSON to a safe backup, record any password and custom values, then remove the damaged file and launch the executable once. A new file should be generated; reapply only settings supported by that newly generated structure.
Safe editing procedure
1. Make a rollback copy
With the process stopped, copy the active JSON to a dated backup in a separate folder. Keep the original filename and extension on the live file. This gives you a known-good restore point if a later edit prevents startup or if a hosting panel regenerates the file unexpectedly.
2. Open it as plain text
Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Do not paste JSON through a word processor. If the editor offers automatic smart quotes or code formatting, disable features that replace straight quotation marks.

3. Set the preset before individual values
Find the existing gameSettingsPreset entry. Change its value to Custom and leave the surrounding JSON punctuation intact. If the key is absent in a newly generated file, use the structure and supported keys documented for your installed server version rather than inventing a field.
4. Change one logical group at a time
Make a small batch of related gameplay changes, save, and keep a note of what you changed. Avoid replacing the entire file with a configuration copied from another server. This makes a bad value easy to isolate and reduces the chance of carrying obsolete keys into a newer build.
5. Check the document before saving
- Every opening brace has a matching closing brace.
- Entries are separated by commas, but the final entry in an object has no trailing comma.
- Keys and text values use straight double quotation marks.
- Boolean, numeric, and text values use the type expected by the server; do not quote a number unless the documentation specifies a string.
- Spelling and capitalization match the supported key and allowed value exactly.
- No comments, explanatory notes, or copied markup appear inside the JSON.
6. Save, then restart the same process
Close the editor or finish saving before launching the executable. Start it through the same service, script, shortcut, or panel that normally hosts the world. Starting a second executable from another folder can make a correct edit appear ineffective.
How to verify that the server loaded the new values
Read startup output first
Keep the dedicated-server command window open during the first restart. A malformed document or unsupported value should produce an error before the server becomes available. Correct the specific entry named by the output instead of repeatedly restarting the same file.
Confirm the file and process match
After startup, verify that the JSON you edited has the expected modified time and that the running process belongs to the same installation directory. If a panel reports a different working directory, use its active path and its stop/start controls for the next change.

Test in a fresh session
Reconnect after the server reports that it is ready. Difficulty changes are server-side and require the restart; an already-connected player can continue to experience the old state until leaving and joining the newly started session. Test one changed behavior at a time so an unrelated world or character condition is not mistaken for a configuration failure.
Preserve the working file
Once the values are confirmed, make another backup. Label it with the server version or update date. A later update may add, remove, or rename settings, so do not assume that an old file can be copied wholesale into a newer installation.

- Leave the command window visible and capture the exact key or value named in the error.
- Stop any remaining server process before editing again.
- Undo the last change in the live file, or restore the last known-good backup.
- Check punctuation and value type around the reported entry, not just the spelling of the key.
- Start the executable once more and confirm that it reaches its normal ready state.
- If the file is still rejected, move the stopped file to a backup location and let the executable generate a fresh one, as Keen’s support guidance recommends for an incorrectly updated file. Reapply settings gradually from the documented structure.
Do not delete the only copy before backing it up. The file may contain a password or other values that are not recoverable from memory. A fresh file solves corruption, but it does not preserve those settings automatically.
Changing dedicated-server difficulty correctly
Difficulty is not a live slider for an active dedicated server. The official update guidance explicitly requires a restart, so a player changing a value while connected will not see an immediate transition. Stop the executable, select Custom if you are controlling individual difficulty entries, save the active JSON, and start the server again.
If you want a complete named mode rather than individual adjustments, use the supported preset for that mode and avoid expecting separate values to override it. If you need both a preset change and manual exceptions, choose Custom and set each exception explicitly. The available keys and permitted values can change with the server version; use the structure generated by your installation and the current Keen documentation for the exact entries.
Self-hosted executable or managed control panel?
The troubleshooting logic is the same, but responsibility for the process and file differs. Hosting terms and availability change, so verify them with the provider before moving a world.

When a panel edit does not stick, determine whether it has separate “save,” “apply,” and “restart” actions. A saved form is not necessarily deployed to the live instance. Stop the server through the panel, apply the configuration, and start it through the same panel so the panel does not immediately restore an older template.
Fast diagnosis by symptom
“It worked until I restarted”
Assume an overwrite first. Restore the file, stop the process, make the change again, and restart only after the save completes. If it still reverts, inspect whether a service or panel copies a template during startup.
“The JSON shows my value, but gameplay is unchanged”
Check the preset and the active executable path. A correct value in an inactive file, or a manual value under a named preset, produces exactly this symptom. After correcting those two points, perform a complete restart and reconnect.
“The server exits immediately”
Read the command window before closing it. Repair the reported syntax or unsupported value, then retry from the backup if necessary. Repeatedly launching without reading the output can obscure the original error.
“There is no JSON file”
Start the intended executable once so it can create its configuration, then stop it before editing. If a file exists elsewhere, that does not prove the active executable uses it. Confirm the folder beside the executable named by your launch method.

That is expected if the old file was removed without a backup. Restore the password and other required values from your saved copy, then reapply supported settings to the newly generated structure. Keep the backup outside the live server directory so an update cannot replace both copies.
Checklist for every future settings change
- Identify the exact executable and its adjacent
enshrouded_server.json. - Stop the process completely before opening the file.
- Back up the current JSON.
- Set
gameSettingsPresettoCustomfor individual controls. - Edit only keys and values supported by the installed version.
- Validate braces, commas, quotation marks, spelling, and value types.
- Save before starting the server.
- Start the same executable or panel instance.
- Read startup output and test after reconnecting.
- Keep the confirmed file as a versioned backup.
Following that sequence addresses the five recurring causes—live-process overwrites, preset precedence, wrong-file edits, invalid JSON, and stale generated files—without changing unrelated server data.
