1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a Valheim dedicated server, choose Gale if your modpack may combine Thunderstore and Hexium. Choose r2modman for a Thunderstore-only group that needs profiles, exports, updates and configuration editing. Use Thunderstore Mod Manager for a Windows-first Thunderstore setup, and use Vortex only when the mods you need are published on Nexus Mods. Whichever manager you choose, install and maintain a separate BepInEx-based server copy; launching a client profile does not modify the dedicated server automatically.
Quick verdict
| Manager | Best fit | Catalog | Desktop platforms listed in the comparison guide | Dedicated-server approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gale | Mixed-source packs or teams that may use Hexium as well as Thunderstore | Thunderstore and Hexium | Windows and Linux | Deploy a separate server profile, or synchronize it with a server-focused tool |
| r2modman | Thunderstore-only groups that need mature profile and configuration workflows | Thunderstore | Windows, Linux and macOS | Export the client profile and install the server copy separately |
| Thunderstore Mod Manager | Windows users who want a straightforward Thunderstore workflow | Thunderstore | Windows | Use its profile as the source for a separately installed server environment |
| Vortex | Servers whose required Valheim mods are on Nexus Mods | Nexus Mods | Not stated in the cited comparison | Manage the server files deliberately; do not assume a client deployment targets the server |
The choice is primarily about catalog coverage and how your team will reproduce the same files on every client and on the server. There are no published independent adoption, reliability or performance statistics that justify ranking one manager by speed or stability.

Why a dedicated server needs more than a client mod profile
A mod manager profile describes what a player launches on their own computer. A dedicated server is a separate Valheim installation with its own executable, BepInEx loader, plugins, configuration files and data directory. Installing a mod into a client profile does not copy it into the server directory, and starting the server does not make clients download matching files automatically.

Think of the setup as two related installations:
- Client installation: the profile each player launches through the manager, containing client-side mods and any shared gameplay mods.
- Server installation: the dedicated-server directory containing BepInEx and every mod that must run on the server, plus server configuration and world backups.
Some mods are client-only, some are server-only, and others must be present on both sides. The mod author’s documentation is the authority for that classification. A server can start with a client-only cosmetic mod missing, but a gameplay mod that changes networking, entities or world data may require the same release and configuration on both ends.

The official Valheim dedicated-server guide covers installing, starting and operating the server. The BepInExPack Valheim listing also points users to Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager and r2modman and includes automated server-installation instructions. Use those instructions for the loader and directory layout rather than copying files into an arbitrary folder.
How the four managers differ
Gale: the flexible choice for Thunderstore and Hexium
Gale is the strongest default when your pack may draw from more than one catalog. Its project README documents support for both Thunderstore and Hexium, and its Valheim changelog records Hexium support. That matters when a required plugin is unavailable in one ecosystem: you can keep one manager workflow instead of manually downloading unrelated archives.
Gale advertises support for more than 150 games. For Valheim, the useful feature is not the game count but the ability to build a profile from the catalogs your team actually uses. The comparison guide lists Gale for Windows and Linux. The project FAQ and README identify GitHub Releases and Thunderstore as official download sources; avoid third-party pages that imitate the project.
For a dedicated server, treat a Gale profile as a manifest for the server deployment, not as the deployment itself. Export or synchronize the profile, then install the server-side files in the dedicated-server directory and test the server independently.
r2modman: the best Thunderstore workflow for organized groups
r2modman is a Thunderstore-centered manager with the workflow most teams want when everyone uses the same catalog. Its documented features include separate profiles, profile exports, direct mod installation, updates and configuration-file editing. Profiles make it practical to maintain a stable production pack and a separate testing pack without mixing files.
The latest version shown in the Thunderstore listing is 3.2.20, with the listing crawled in 2026. Treat that as the version recorded on that date, not as a promise that it remains current. Check the manager’s current release listing before installing or standardizing a team.
The comparison guide lists r2modman for Windows, Linux and macOS. That broad desktop coverage is useful when players use different operating systems, but it does not remove the need for a server-side installation. Export the profile, share the export or profile code with administrators, and deploy the server copy separately.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Thunderstore Mod Manager: a Windows-first Thunderstore setup
Thunderstore Mod Manager is appropriate when the entire pack is on Thunderstore and the group uses Windows. The documented comparison lists it as Windows-only and Thunderstore-oriented. Its narrower scope can be an advantage: fewer catalog choices mean fewer decisions for a small group that has already standardized on Thunderstore.
It should still be treated as a client profile tool unless you deliberately create and maintain a server installation. Verify which selected mods are server-side, copy the required BepInEx plugins and configuration to the server, and restart the server after changes.
Vortex: choose it only for Nexus Mods requirements
Vortex is the sensible option when the Valheim mods you need are distributed through Nexus Mods rather than Thunderstore or Hexium. It is not the natural choice for a Thunderstore pack simply because it is a general-purpose manager. Confirm that every required mod and its dependencies are available in the Nexus catalog, then plan a separate, auditable server deployment.
The cited comparison does not establish a platform list for Vortex, so do not infer one from the other managers’ entries. Use the current Vortex and mod documentation for operating-system support and deployment details.

Choose by your server’s actual situation
Choose Gale when sources are mixed
Pick Gale if one or more required mods are on Hexium, if your pack is likely to add Hexium packages later, or if your players need Windows/Linux support from the same manager. Keep a written list of each package’s catalog and version so the server administrator can reproduce the profile.
Choose r2modman when Thunderstore is the team standard
Pick r2modman when every required package is on Thunderstore and you value profile switching, exports, direct installs, updates and config editing. It is especially practical for maintaining a production profile alongside a temporary test profile.
Choose Thunderstore Mod Manager for a simple Windows group
Pick it when all players are on Windows, the pack is entirely on Thunderstore and you do not need a cross-platform client workflow. Keep the server process separate even if the client setup is uncomplicated.

Choose Vortex for a Nexus-only requirement
Pick Vortex only when the authoritative versions of your required mods are on Nexus Mods. Mixing download ecosystems without a clear manifest makes troubleshooting harder, so do not select it merely because it is familiar.
Prerequisites before installing server mods
- Access to the dedicated-server machine and its Valheim directory.
- Permission to read and write the server’s BepInEx directory and restart the service or process.
- A current backup of the world files and the existing server directory.
- A documented Valheim game version and a list of required mod versions.
- A way to distribute the same client profile to every player, such as an export, profile code or shared manifest.
- A maintenance window: adding a loader or changing gameplay mods can require a full server restart.
Stop the server before replacing BepInEx files or plugins. Keep the backup outside the directory you are about to modify so a failed update cannot overwrite both the live copy and the rollback.
Step-by-step deployment workflow
1. Build and test a client profile
- Install the manager from its documented official source. For Gale, the project identifies GitHub Releases and Thunderstore as official sources.
- Create a new Valheim profile rather than modifying an untracked default profile.
- Add the required mods and dependencies from the supported catalog. Record the manager, package name, version and source for each item.
- Launch Valheim once with the profile and confirm that the game reaches the menu and that the intended features work in a test world.
- Open each mod’s documentation and mark whether it is client-only, server-only or required on both sides.
2. Prepare the dedicated server loader
- Follow the official Valheim dedicated-server instructions to install or update the server.
- Install BepInExPack Valheim into the dedicated-server directory using its documented automated or manual method.
- Start the server once, then stop it. This creates the loader’s directories and confirms that the server can boot before third-party plugins are added.
- Back up the newly created server directory and world data.
3. Create the server mod set
- Start from the tested client profile, but filter out client-only packages.
- Copy server-required plugins and shared plugins into the server’s BepInEx/plugins directory, preserving each package’s folder structure.
- Copy only the configuration files that are intended for the server. Client graphics, HUD or input settings generally do not belong on the server.
- Keep a manifest containing exact package versions and source catalogs. If a package comes from Hexium, record that explicitly instead of assuming a Thunderstore equivalent.
4. Use synchronization when your team needs repeatable installs
VSMM is a server-focused option that follows Gale profile synchronization. It accepts profile codes or .r2z files and resolves packages through thunderstore-engine. This can reduce manual copying for a team that has standardized on Gale-compatible profile sharing. It does not change the underlying rule: verify the resulting files in the server’s BepInEx directory and keep backups before applying updates.
5. Start, inspect and test
- Start the server with the new files and watch the console or log for BepInEx startup messages, missing dependencies and plugin exceptions.
- Connect with one client using the matching profile before inviting the whole group.
- Test the features that motivated the pack: world generation, progression, inventory, networking and any server commands.
- Stop the server and restore the backup if the world fails to load, the process loops on errors or players cannot connect.
6. Distribute the client profile
Share the manager profile export, profile code or equivalent manifest. Tell players which manager and catalog to use, which profile to select and which game version is expected. Ask every player to close Valheim before updating files; an open game can keep old assemblies loaded and create misleading test results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keeping client and server mod lists in sync
Synchronization is an operating procedure, not a single button. Maintain one canonical manifest owned by the server administrator. For every package, record:

- Catalog: Thunderstore, Hexium or Nexus Mods.
- Whether it is client-only, server-only or shared.
- Configuration changes and the person who approved them.
- Date of the last tested update.
When changing the pack, clone the production profile into a test profile, update one logical group of mods at a time and run a server test. Export the tested profile, update the server backup, then schedule the production restart. Keep the previous manifest and plugin directory so a rollback is a file operation rather than an emergency search for old downloads.
Do not update clients first and hope the server catches up. A client can often launch with extra cosmetic files, but a mismatch in a shared gameplay or networking mod can cause connection rejection, missing assets, desynchronized behavior or world errors. If a player reports a problem after an update, compare their exported profile against the canonical manifest before changing configuration at random.

Dedicated-server hosting requirements
If you rent Valheim dedicated-server hosting, verify capabilities rather than assuming that a control panel supports every manager. The service should provide:
- Access to the server’s BepInEx directory, either through a file manager, SFTP or an equivalent administrative method.
- Reliable stop and start controls, with a full restart after plugin or configuration changes.
- Automated and downloadable backups of world data and the modded server directory.
- A way to upload a profile export, archive or synchronized file set.
- Visible logs so you can diagnose missing dependencies and plugin exceptions.
- Enough storage for the Valheim server, BepInEx files, backups and retained rollback copies.
Before committing to a provider, ask whether its policies permit BepInEx and the mods you intend to run, whether restarts can be scheduled, and whether support staff can restore a known-good backup. Do not assume that a provider supports Gale, r2modman, Hexium or Thunderstore until the provider confirms the exact workflow.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The client has the mod, but the server behaves as vanilla | The profile was installed only on the player’s computer | Install BepInEx and the server-required plugins in the dedicated-server directory, then restart. |
| Players are rejected or disconnect immediately | A shared mod, dependency or version differs between client and server | Compare the canonical manifest with each player’s exported profile and align versions. |
| The server crashes during startup | Missing dependency, incompatible plugin or malformed configuration | Read the BepInEx log, remove the newest change, restore the backup and reintroduce packages one at a time. |
| A package cannot be found in the selected manager | The package belongs to another catalog | Use Gale for Thunderstore/Hexium coverage, r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager for Thunderstore, or Vortex for Nexus Mods, then document the source. |
| Players have different settings | Configuration files were edited locally and never distributed | Decide which settings are server authoritative, publish the approved values and keep client-only settings separate. |
| An update breaks the world | The new plugin changed data or behavior without a tested rollback | Stop the server, restore the previous plugin set and world backup, and test the update in a separate profile first. |
| The downloaded manager looks suspicious | A lookalike or unofficial download page | Use the project’s documented official sources; Gale specifically identifies GitHub Releases and Thunderstore as official sources. |
Security and maintenance practices
Download managers and mods only from the catalogs and release locations documented by their projects. Treat a random repackaged executable as untrusted. Keep the manager, BepInEx loader and server operating system patched, but stage updates on a copy before touching a live world.
Restrict write access to the server directory to the administrator account or service that needs it. Back up both world data and the mod manifest. A world backup without the matching plugin versions may not be a complete recovery point, and a plugin archive without the world files cannot restore progress.
When a mod is abandoned or its dependencies change, remove it from the test profile first. Record the removal and inform players which profile export supersedes the old one. Avoid making several unrelated changes in a single restart; isolating changes is the fastest way to identify a faulty package.
Bottom line: which manager should you install?
For most dedicated-server teams, the decision is straightforward: use Gale for Thunderstore plus Hexium flexibility, r2modman for a disciplined Thunderstore-only workflow, Thunderstore Mod Manager for a Windows-only Thunderstore group, and Vortex only for a Nexus Mods-based pack. The manager organizes profiles; it does not replace the dedicated-server installation. Build a tested client profile, deploy the corresponding BepInEx server files separately or through a verified synchronization workflow, and preserve a versioned manifest and rollback backup for every change.
