How to use the pump
- Prepare the plunger. Depress the end to engage or preload the vacuum mechanism, following the tool’s release-button operation.
- Melt the solder. Heat the joint with a soldering iron until the solder is liquid.
- Position the nozzle. Bring the silicone tip close to the joint so the opening is positioned to draw in the molten solder.
- Release the plunger. Press the release button to actuate suction over the joint.
- Clear residue if needed. Use solder wick to remove solder that remains after pumping.
This sequence follows the instructions in Adafruit’s product listing; it is retailer guidance, not a controlled performance test. ENGINEER’s datasheet gives a 350°C nozzle heat-resistance rating and says the nozzle can withstand direct contact with a soldering iron tip up to that temperature. That rating is not a statement of unlimited contact time or a guarantee for every soldering setup.
SS-02 versus SS-03: what changed, and what to look for
The available manufacturer and retailer dates do not establish one exact worldwide transition date. ENGINEER marks the SS-02 discontinued from November 2024. Adafruit says its listing became the SS-03 as of October 16, 2024. These are each source’s model-status statements, not proof that every seller changed listings on the same date.

ENGINEER’s 2022 catalog says the SS-02 originally included two 50 mm spare silicone tubes and describes a self-cleaning shaft. The catalog does not establish present-day spare-part inventory, so check the specific replacement listing for compatibility and availability.

The SS-02’s 2 mm internal-diameter silicone nozzle is a relevant physical detail when judging whether it can reach a joint; the cited sources do not provide controlled head-to-head results against other pumps or wick. Adafruit specifically suggests wick for solder that remains after suction, making it a useful cleanup option rather than a claim that either method is universally better.

- Consider whether the nozzle can reach the joint and sit close enough to draw solder.
- Check nozzle material and dimensions against the board layout and the work you need to do.
- For residue that remains after pumping, keep solder wick available as a complementary method.
- If you work on many joints, account for clearing and maintaining the pump as well as replacing tubing when needed.
