Choose Enable to restore something you previously disabled, Disable to stop ordinary use while keeping a reversible option where available, and Uninstall or Delete to remove an app when the operating system permits it. If you want to free space without losing an app’s documents, iPhone’s Offload option may fit better. The right choice depends on your goal and device: these controls do not mean the same thing on every platform.
What is the difference between enable, disable, and uninstall?
| Choice | What it generally does | Choose it when | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable | Restores an app or feature after it was disabled. The available control and what it restores depend on the platform. | You want to use something again. | Whether you changed a device setting or an administrator-managed deployment. |
| Disable | Stops use or deactivates an item in some settings while retaining the app or its configuration. The effect can differ in enterprise software management. | You want a reversible change, or a preloaded app cannot be uninstalled. | Whether other device features depend on it, and whether a management policy controls it. |
| Uninstall / Delete | Removes an app through the operating system’s removal process, if removal is allowed. | You no longer need the app and want it removed from the device. | Local and cloud data, subscriptions, reinstall options, and system dependencies. |
| Offload | On iPhone, removes the app but keeps its documents and data; its icon remains available to reinstall. | You need to free space but may want the app and its documents back. | The behavior for your iOS version and the particular app. |
These are general distinctions, not universal definitions. For example, Samsung says disabling certain preloaded apps leaves them installed, while Microsoft Configuration Manager uses disabling for an app deployment—a management action that can require a policy refresh. Samsung’s app guidance and Microsoft’s Configuration Manager documentation describe those platform-specific cases.

Which option fits your goal?
You want an app or feature back
Look for an Enable or turn-on control in the same settings area where it was disabled. On Samsung Galaxy, the documented route is Settings > Apps > select the app > Enable. On Android generally, Google explains how to add back deleted or disabled apps; available steps and controls depend on the app and device, and some directions apply only to Android 13 and later. Google’s Android app guidance has the steps.

Disable it if your device offers that option and you have checked that other functions do not rely on it. This can be useful for some preloaded apps, but it is not a guarantee that every setting or piece of app data will be preserved. Samsung notes that some apps cannot be disabled because the device needs them. Samsung’s guidance is specific to Galaxy devices, not every Android phone.

You want the app removed from a Windows PC
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, try Settings > Apps > Installed apps when the app appears there, or use the Start menu or Control Panel route Microsoft documents. Some built-in apps cannot be uninstalled, and an unavailable uninstall option may require a different approach rather than a setting change. Microsoft’s Windows uninstall instructions cover the available routes.
You want to remove an app from an iPhone
Choose the action that matches what you mean by “remove.” Remove from Home Screen leaves the app in App Library. Delete App removes it from the iPhone. Offload App removes the app while retaining its documents and data. Apple also describes Screen Time and separate locking or hiding controls for restricting access; blocking, hiding, and deleting are not interchangeable. Apple’s iPhone app removal guidance explains these options.

You are managing a work or school device
Do not assume an app control in an administrator console works like a phone or PC’s local setting. In Microsoft Configuration Manager, disabling and uninstalling an application are distinct deployment actions, and when a change takes effect can depend on targeting and policy refresh. Follow your organization’s instructions rather than trying to bypass its management settings. Microsoft’s deployment documentation describes the administrator-managed behavior.

- Files and account data: Check where the app stores documents, photos, or other information. Apple notes that iCloud-stored data may remain after deleting an app from iPhone, so removing the app does not necessarily remove every cloud copy. Verify the app’s account or cloud storage separately. Apple’s guidance explains the distinction.
- Subscriptions: Deleting an app does not itself cancel an in-app subscription. Manage the subscription separately before or after removal. Apple explains how to cancel a subscription.
- Device functions: Some apps are required for a device or integrated with other features, so the operating system or manufacturer may prevent disabling or uninstalling them. Apple also warns that removing built-in apps can affect other system functions. Apple’s built-in app guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy guidance document these limits.
- Reinstallation: Check whether the app is still available to reinstall and whether you can sign back in or restore its content. Availability and recovery options vary by app and platform.
When disable and uninstall mean something different
On a personal phone or PC, these labels usually appear as app controls. In device management software, they can instead describe what happens to a deployment or which users receive it. Configuration Manager’s disable action concerns deployment behavior, not simply turning off a locally installed app. Identify whether you are changing an app on your device or managing its distribution before choosing a control.

Use the instructions for your specific operating system and manufacturer rather than assuming one platform’s steps apply everywhere.
