Enable Bonjour on Your Printer and Make It Discoverable on Mac

Turn on Bonjour in the printer’s network settings if required, then add it under System Settings > Printers & Scanners. Exact printer menus and AirPrint support vary by model.

To enable Bonjour, turn it on in your printer’s network settings if the model requires it, then add the printer in macOS under System Settings > Printers & Scanners. The precise printer-side menu depends on the model. Bonjour helps devices find services on a local network; it does not, by itself, guarantee AirPrint support or successful printing.

What Bonjour does—and what it does not do

Bonjour is Apple’s zero-configuration networking technology for discovering devices and services on a local network. Apple describes it as enabling automatic discovery using standard IP protocols: Apple Developer’s Bonjour overview.

Discovery and printing are separate steps. A printer appearing in the Mac’s list means it has been discovered; the printer must also support and be configured for the print protocol and features you want. AirPrint, for example, depends on the printer’s AirPrint and IPP support as well as Bonjour configuration. Apple notes that generic network-printer connections may have limited features.

Enable Bonjour on the printer

1. Check the model and network connection

Find the exact printer model and use its manufacturer’s instructions for network or protocol settings. There is no universal Bonjour menu path. Make sure the printer is powered on, connected to the intended network, and has an IP address. Some printers need Bonjour enabled manually; others may already have it enabled.

2. Turn on the model-specific Bonjour setting

Look in the printer’s network, connectivity, or protocol settings for Bonjour. If the interface includes a Bonjour name or service name field, set a recognizable name and save or apply the change. The printer’s manual determines the exact labels and whether a restart is needed.

For example, the Xerox PrimeLink B9100/B9110/B9125/B9136 administrator guide uses the printer’s Embedded Web Server: go to Properties > Connectivity > Port Settings, enable Bonjour, and select Apply. Its Bonjour configuration page is under Properties > Connectivity > Protocols > Bonjour, where host and printer names can be configured. These directions apply to that device family, not to printers generally. See the Xerox PrimeLink administrator guide.

A Konica Minolta AccurioPrint 2100 startup guide, by contrast, calls for configuring the IP address, setting Bonjour Setting to ON, and entering a Bonjour Name. Its menu labels are specific to that model. See the Konica Minolta AccurioPrint 2100 startup guide.

Add the printer on your Mac

  1. Make sure the Mac is connected to the intended network. A printer and Mac on the same Wi-Fi network can often discover one another without additional setup.

  2. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

  3. Select Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax (or the add-printer control shown in your macOS version), then choose the printer from the discovered list and follow the prompts. Apple’s current instructions are in Add and manage printers on Mac.

If you have just turned on the printer, give it a minute or two to join the network before checking the list again. Older manufacturer guides may say System Preferences; on current macOS, use System Settings.

If the printer does not appear

  • Check power and network status. Confirm the printer is on the intended network and has an IP address. If it was just powered on, wait a minute or two and refresh the add-printer list.

  • Verify Bonjour on the printer. Consult the model’s manual to confirm that Bonjour is supported, enabled, and—where required—has a configured name.

  • Check the network path. The Mac must be able to reach the printer. If they are on different subnets or VLANs, Bonjour’s multicast DNS discovery may not pass between them by default. Ask the network administrator whether the network is configured to relay or pass the relevant traffic; do not change network security settings blindly.

  • Try adding by IP if discovery still fails. Apple documents adding a network printer by its IP address using a protocol the printer supports. This can bypass discovery, but a generic protocol connection may not provide every printer feature or the same convenience as the manufacturer’s software.

Bonjour is on, but printing or AirPrint does not work

Confirm that the selected printer protocol is supported and configured on the exact model. For AirPrint, check the manufacturer’s documentation for both AirPrint and IPP support; enabling Bonjour alone does not establish that either is available or enabled. Xerox’s guide, for example, says its AirPrint configuration requires IPP and Bonjour.

If the printer is discovered but jobs fail or options are missing, check the printer’s status and protocol settings, and use the manufacturer’s current driver or software when needed. Apple’s printer setup guidance explains the available network-printer approaches and notes that some generic protocol setups have limited features.

When Bonjour discovery crosses subnets

Bonjour’s local-network discovery relies on multicast DNS. When a Mac and printer are separated by subnets, an administrator may need to configure the network to pass or relay that traffic. Xerox’s PrimeLink guide describes Wide-Area Bonjour and notes that cross-subnet AirPrint requires the network to pass multicast DNS traffic. This is a network configuration issue, not a setting that can be fixed by toggling Bonjour on the Mac alone.
