A floppy-drive emulator replaces the drive at a vintage computer’s floppy interface. The computer still sees a drive; the emulator uses modern storage to present a selected floppy-disk image as the inserted disk. A USB flash drive alone cannot do that—the emulator hardware and firmware provide the interface behavior the old machine expects.
What floppy-drive emulation means
A configured Gotek running FlashFloppy is one example of this approach. Gotek is the hardware; FlashFloppy is firmware that lets it behave as a floppy drive and select disk images stored on a USB drive. FlashFloppy’s Initial Setup documentation describes the arrangement as a “disk jukebox”: the user navigates image files on the USB drive and mounts one as the disk in the emulated drive.

That distinction matters. The USB stick stores files, but the vintage host does not access it as USB storage. Instead, it communicates with the emulator over the floppy-drive interface and accesses the mounted image through its usual floppy path. The emulator is the bridge between those two sides.
How the emulator works
- It connects to the host’s floppy interface. The emulator must respond using the electrical and signaling behavior expected by the computer. FlashFloppy defaults to Shugart mode, which its setup guide identifies as compatible with systems including the Amiga, Atari ST and Amstrad CPC.
- It uses the expected drive selection. A host may look for a particular drive unit. FlashFloppy’s guide describes S0/S1 jumpers and configuration through
FF.CFG; the right selection depends on the computer and Gotek hardware. - It reads the image library from USB storage. FlashFloppy requires a FAT32-formatted USB drive. Its guide says ExFAT and NTFS are unsupported. The firmware provides navigation, emulation and eject modes for selecting and mounting images.
- It presents one selected image as an inserted disk. Once mounted, the host uses its ordinary floppy-drive access rather than a USB-storage connection. Whether a particular image works still depends on its format and the host’s floppy controller.
These are not universal settings for every vintage computer. IBM PC compatibles use a modified floppy interface, including a disk-changed signal on a different pin. FlashFloppy documents a separate PC mode, so Shugart and PC behavior should not be treated as interchangeable. Check the host-specific setup guidance and the exact Gotek revision before choosing or configuring hardware.

Choosing between drive emulation and disk imaging
A Gotek with FlashFloppy and a physical-drive imaging interface address different jobs. The former replaces a drive in the vintage host so it can use selected images. Greaseweazle and FluxEngine are tools for interfacing with conventional floppy drives to read, write or process physical disks; they do not replace the host-side emulator.

The image fidelity required is an important distinction when working with physical disks. Greaseweazle’s Getting Started documentation distinguishes sector images, which preserve accessible user data; formatted-track images, which can capture format structures and some intentional errors; and flux images, which capture magnetic transitions and can preserve unusual encoding and some copy-protection features. A disk-image file is not automatically a complete preservation of every physical feature of a disk.

FluxEngine’s documentation also cautions that feature support depends on the hardware, and that its release cycle is not synchronized with Greaseweazle firmware. Compatibility between a particular device, software and firmware combination should be checked rather than assumed.
What to verify before setting up a Gotek
- Host interface: Determine whether the computer expects Shugart or IBM PC behavior and select the corresponding configuration.
- Drive selection: Check which unit the host expects and whether the hardware’s S0/S1 jumper or
FF.CFGsetting needs adjustment. - USB formatting: Use FAT32; ExFAT and NTFS are documented as unsupported by FlashFloppy’s setup guide.
- Image and controller compatibility: Confirm that the image format suits the machine’s floppy controller and the intended software. The broad compatibility examples in the setup guide do not establish that every image will work on every system.
- Exact hardware and controls: Confirm the particular Gotek revision and how it presents selection and eject controls. The setup documentation describes the configuration concept, but does not establish a current product listing, price or stock status.
When the task is copying or preserving physical disks
Disk-image creation is separate from mounting an image on a host-side emulator. Greaseweazle can work with physical drives at sector, formatted-track and magnetic-flux levels. FluxEngine is another hardware-and-software path for reading, writing and processing floppy flux information.

FluxEngine’s Building the hardware guide illustrates the additional pieces a DIY physical-drive interface can require: a PSoC5LP development board, floppy connector, firmware, host software and floppy drive. It specifies a shared ground between the USB-powered interface hardware and externally powered drive hardware, and warns that a wiring error can corrupt a disk. That caution applies to this DIY interface workflow, not as a universal Gotek installation procedure. Keep valuable disks out of the drive while checking wiring.
For the documented Gotek setup, the essential idea is straightforward: modern USB storage holds the images, while the configured emulator handles the vintage host’s floppy interface. The right mode, drive selection and image matter as much as the fact that the machine has a floppy-shaped replacement.
