Choose EmuDeck if you want to select emulators, settings, and Steam library integration yourself. Choose RetroDECK if you prefer installing one app through Discover and following a guided first-run setup. They use different setup models, not different guarantees of game performance: the available documentation does not establish that either is universally more stable, faster, or compatible with more games.
EmuDeck and RetroDECK use different setup models
EmuDeck describes itself as an installation script that sets up emulator software and gives you choices about configuration and integration. RetroDECK is installed as an app through Discover; on first launch, it guides you through storage and optional Steam integration.

In practice, the choice is about how you want to manage the setup. EmuDeck exposes more decisions during installation and offers later emulator management. RetroDECK brings its setup into a guided app workflow. Neither provides game files or BIOS/firmware.

Choose EmuDeck if you want more setup choices
EmuDeck’s Easy Mode keeps most defaults while allowing choices such as storage and system integration. Custom Mode gives you additional choices at setup. The installation guide says settings and emulator selection can be changed later, so you do not have to treat the first-run choices as permanent.

During installation, EmuDeck can ask about ROM and BIOS locations, Steam Library or EmulationStation integration, emulator selection, RetroAchievements, bezels, aspect ratio, shaders, controller layout, and cloud saves. Its own help page characterizes it as an installation script rather than an all-in-one solution. Read EmuDeck Help and review the installation guide before choosing options.
SteamOS installation outline
- Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode and download and run the installer using the steps in the EmuDeck SteamOS guide.
- If you plan to use an SD card, format it in Game Mode if needed. The guide specifies ext4 or btrfs for SteamOS cards.
- Choose where to store ROMs and BIOS files. The guide’s example folders are
Emulation/romsandEmulation/bios. - If you want selected games in Steam, open Steam ROM Manager and select parsers. The guide also describes using the EmulationStation-DE parser to add that frontend.
EmuDeck says it installs emulators from Discover or official emulator repositories, creates an organized Emulation folder, and supports Linux/SteamOS, Windows, Mac beta, and Android beta. Those platform labels describe EmuDeck availability, not a promise that every setup choice or emulator is identical across platforms. EmuDeck Help

Choose RetroDECK if you prefer a guided app setup
RetroDECK’s Steam Deck guide starts with installation through Discover in Desktop Mode. On first launch, choose internal storage, an SD card, or a custom location for the RetroDECK folder. You can then optionally add the app to Steam and enable controller templates. If you add it to Steam, a further prompt can enable synchronization that scans ES-DE favorites and creates individual Steam entries for those games.

RetroDECK’s general getting-started instructions say to install only from official Flathub channels. Firmware downloads are optional; the Steam Deck guide says they come only from officially distributed sources. Read the RetroDECK getting-started guide.

Use your own game files and check storage before setup
Neither project supplies ROMs or BIOS. EmuDeck says users must provide their own, and RetroDECK lists game backups and applicable BIOS/firmware among its prerequisites. Use files you are legally entitled to use; laws vary by country. EmuDeck Help and RetroDECK getting-started guide.
An SD card can be useful if you want emulation files separate from internal storage; both setup flows allow an SD-card location. Before choosing one for EmuDeck on SteamOS, check that it is formatted as ext4 or btrfs, as specified in its guide. The reviewed setup documentation does not specify a required capacity or branded card.

- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What the latest documented EmuDeck 2.7 announcement adds
In a developer announcement posted September 29, 2026, EmuDeck listed 2.7 features including install export and import, additional resolution controls, RetroAchievements updates, and automatic controller mapping for up to four players, including external controllers such as 8BitDo, Xbox, and DualSense. The announcement also mentions Steam Machine improvements. These are release-specific claims from a developer post, not a neutral comparison or a guarantee for every controller or setup; check the EmuDeck 2.7 announcement for its details.
The reviewed RetroDECK documentation does not provide a comparable, exhaustive version-by-version feature inventory. Nor do the available sources establish a complete, current compatibility ranking of the two projects across emulators and systems. Choose based on the documented workflow that suits you, rather than assuming one supports more games or runs them better.
