For standard Steam Deck controls, start with the relevant EmuDeck Steam Input profile or an emulator’s built-in auto-map option when one is available. Use manual mapping when a control is missing, a game needs a different layout, or a controller feature is not reaching the emulator. One clarification: EmuDeck’s documentation does not describe a single universal feature called “AutoMap”; it covers Steam Input profiles and separate auto-map workflows within particular emulators.
What “AutoMap” means in EmuDeck
EmuDeck documents Steam Input profiles as a way to provide standardized Steam Deck controls across emulators and make some emulator hotkeys easier to use. Separately, individual emulator guides describe their own auto-map actions. These are related shortcuts for setting up controls, but they are not one system-wide EmuDeck setting. EmuDeck’s Hotkeys guide explains its Steam Input profile approach.

For example, Cemu’s guide instructs users to select SDLController and click Add to auto-map controls, then save a named profile. The Ryujinx and RPCS3 guides discuss auto-mapping in the context of multiplayer setup. Those player-configuration procedures are not a universal recipe for single-player mapping.
Which approach should you use?

This is a workflow recommendation based on the documented setup options, not a claim that auto-map always produces a correct layout or that one approach has been tested as faster in every case.

Choose an EmuDeck Steam Input profile in Game Mode
- Open the game in Game Mode and select its Controller icon.
- Select the current layout to open the layout chooser.
- Choose an available EmuDeck profile from the drop-down and test the controls you need.
- If there is no dedicated profile, check the Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad layout recommended by EmuDeck before assuming you must bind every button yourself.
EmuDeck’s FAQ lists Steam Input profiles for Cemu, Citra, DuckStation, melonDS, mGBA, PPSSPP, and RMG. Do not assume all profiles provide identical controls or hotkeys: the documented functions vary by emulator. See the Hotkeys guide and EmuDeck FAQ.
When and how to map controls manually
Manual mapping is the better fit when the default layout does not match a game, an input is absent, or you need a deliberate variation. Open the target emulator’s input settings, assign the desired buttons or axes, and save the change using that emulator’s own profile or remap controls. Do not assume a save applies to every emulator or has the same scope everywhere.

Cemu
Cemu’s documented controller setup uses SDLController and an Add action to auto-map controls. From there, you can adjust the bindings and save a named profile. Its setup guide also describes enabling motion when you want that feature: Cemu controller setup.
RetroArch
RetroArch’s EmuDeck guide describes saving a remap for an individual game or for a content directory/system. Choose the scope that matches the change you want, then save it in RetroArch’s remapping controls: RetroArch guide.

Other emulators
Use the target emulator’s own input screen and follow its documented procedure. A control action or save option described for Cemu or RetroArch should not be presumed to exist in another emulator.
External controllers, gyro, and multiplayer details
When an external controller feature does not work
EmuDeck warns that Steam Input may interfere with native controller features; its example is external gyro not being properly exposed to emulators. For the affected game, try disabling Steam Input in the game’s controller settings, then restart if the change does not take effect immediately. This is reversible through the same settings. Check the particular emulator’s device configuration as well: disabling Steam Input is not a universal fix. EmuDeck’s external-controller guidance covers this interaction.

When adding multiple players
Ryujinx and RPCS3 have emulator-specific multiplayer setup procedures. Ryujinx’s guide describes assigning Steam Virtual Gamepads to additional player slots; RPCS3’s guide has separate handler and device selections for player setup. If several controllers are connected, EmuDeck notes that controller order may need to be rearranged. Follow the relevant emulator guide rather than applying a single-player mapping procedure to every player slot: Ryujinx setup and RPCS3 setup.

- Confirm that the game is using the intended Steam Input layout, rather than a different saved layout.
- Check whether the emulator itself has separate input bindings or a profile that overrides what you expect.
- For a missing button or a game-specific arrangement, adjust and save a remap in the emulator where supported.
- For external-controller features, check Steam Input and the emulator’s selected device; restart the game after changing Steam Input if necessary.
- For multiplayer, verify the player slot, handler/device selection, and controller order instead of changing only the first player’s mapping.
EmuDeck’s documentation is maintained and its menus or profile names can change. These steps reflect the documented workflows; they do not establish a universal mapping result for every game, emulator version, or controller.
