An email preview, a remote-image request and a click on a tracked link are different events—and each can reveal different information. A useful privacy contract should say plainly what event is recorded, what data it involves, who receives it, why it is processed, how long it is kept and what choices people have. That is a practical transparency framework, not a universal legal checklist.
What an email preview can reveal
A message can cause a remote request before a recipient deliberately opens or interacts with it. Apple says that when Mail Privacy Protection is enabled, Mail downloads remote content in the background by default, regardless of engagement, and routes it through two relays so no single relay has both the recipient’s IP address and the third-party Mail content. Apple describes the feature this way: “Protect Mail Activity helps protect your privacy by preventing email senders, including Apple, from learning information about your Mail activity.” Apple Support and Apple’s privacy statement explain the feature’s scope.

This concerns remote content in Apple Mail; it is not a general guarantee that every email client hides every preview or tracking event. Nor should an image request automatically be treated as proof that a person read a message: background fetching can occur without deliberate engagement.
Image proxying and link checks are separate
Remote images: proxy or cache behavior
Gmail’s image handling is about images, not a blanket proxy for every link a recipient clicks. Google Workspace says: “When your users open email messages, Gmail uses Google’s secure proxy servers to serve images that might be included in these messages.” Google gives image-based security vulnerabilities as part of the rationale. Workspace administrators can configure URL patterns to bypass the proxy, but Google warns this can expose users and domains to security risks and does not recommend disabling image proxying. Clicked links: security scanning at click time
Google separately describes link protection for official Gmail clients and a test of similar protections for some users of third-party IMAP clients, including Apple Mail, Outlook and some Android clients. The test status matters: availability may change, and it is not evidence that all users of those clients receive the feature. Google says logging for this protection includes the request IP address, user agent and information about clicked URLs; it says this information is kept for a short period and used for security purposes, without specifying a duration. Image proxying and click-time inspection therefore should not be described as interchangeable. One concerns how remote images are fetched or served; the other concerns checking a URL when someone clicks. Security screening can involve request and URL data, even when its purpose is protective.

Apple Mail Privacy Protection does not hide link visits
Apple is explicit: “Mail Privacy Protection does not extend to links or email attachments such as PDF or other files.” A feature that limits what senders learn from remote content in Apple Mail does not anonymize a later visit to a website. A recipient who clicks a link may still expose information to services involved in handling or receiving that request, depending on the link, client and service. Apple’s support page.

Email links can carry identifiers or trigger requests that disclose information beyond the destination address. In the 2018 FTC PrivacyCon paper I never signed up for this! Privacy implications of email tracking, the authors found that 11% of links in their dataset contained embedded content requests that leaked the email address to a third party, and at least 35% of senders included at least one such link in one email. These are findings from that paper’s methods and dataset, not current prevalence estimates for all email. The paper also discusses provider defenses such as proxying remote resources. Security checks and analytics can both touch link data, but they are different purposes. A disclosure should not describe security scanning as though it were a user’s intentional click—or conceal analytics or attribution behind a vague phrase such as “improving the service.”
A practical privacy contract for email previews and links
Senders and services that handle previews, images or links can use a short, plain-language agreement or accompanying disclosure. The following elements are recommendations grounded in the documented data flows, not a statement of universal legal requirements.

- Name the event. Distinguish background image retrieval, preview generation, a message open, a security scan and a deliberate click. Do not treat these as equivalent evidence of reading or engagement.
- List the information involved. Depending on the flow, this may include a URL and its query parameters, request time, IP address, user agent, identifiers embedded in a link, or an association with a recipient or campaign. Attribute particular fields to a service only when that service documents them; do not imply every provider collects all of them.
- Identify the recipients. Say which parties actually receive relevant data—for example, the sender, email service, security provider, analytics vendor or destination site—and distinguish a party that checks a link from one that receives a visit.
- State the purpose clearly. Separate security screening, delivery, analytics, attribution and personalization. If data serves more than one of these purposes, name them rather than grouping them under a catch-all description.
- Explain retention. Give a specific period where it is known. For Google’s documented link-protection logging, the cited description says “a short period” but does not provide a number; a contract should not turn that phrase into an invented duration.
- Describe real choices. Explain available opt-outs or reduced-tracking settings, show where links lead when practical, and tell recipients they can go directly to a known site instead of following a suspicious message link. Do not promise controls the product does not offer.
- State the boundary of protection. If describing Apple Mail Privacy Protection, say that it addresses remote content activity and does not extend to later link visits or attachments.
This framework is a transparency recommendation, not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice. The cited platform descriptions and study do not establish one governing legal standard for senders or services.

What recipients can do before following a link
Google advises users to check that the address and sender name match, inspect whether a link destination fits its description, and avoid entering private information after following a suspicious email link. Those are safety steps, not a promise that a link is untracked. Google’s guidance on identifying and reporting phishing.
