The right email API depends on whether your application sends transactional messages, marketing broadcasts, processes inbound email, or needs a mix. Resend, Postmark, Twilio SendGrid, Mailgun, Amazon SES and Brevo are candidates to evaluate; MailerSend also surfaced in comparison results. Available current evidence confirms specific pricing only for Resend, Postmark and Amazon SES, so this is a decision guide—not a verified ranking of seven products.
Choose by email workflow first
An API that sends a password reset is not automatically the right system for newsletters or inbound email processing. List the message types and event flows your application needs before comparing plans.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Transactional: messages triggered by application events, such as receipts, account notices or password resets.
- Marketing or broadcast: campaigns sent to an audience rather than to an individual in response to an application event.
- Inbound processing: receiving email and routing its contents or attachments into an application workflow.
- Mixed use: some providers support multiple workflows, but confirm the provider’s current capabilities and whether it recommends separate streams for different message types.
Postmark explicitly recommends not mixing transactional and marketing mail and describes separate streams for transactional and broadcast messages. That is its product design and guidance, not independent evidence of better inbox placement.

The following figures come from provider pricing pages accessed in October 2026. Pricing and plan terms can change. A listed base sending rate is not necessarily the total bill: check overages, attachment data, add-ons and fixed charges against your expected monthly volume.

How to assess the seven candidates
The search surfaced these services as candidates, but a shortlist is not proof that each offers the same features or represents the seven best choices. The profiles below distinguish confirmed facts from items that need checking on current official product pages.
Resend
Resend is one option to evaluate for application email. Its current pricing page lists a free plan with 3,000 emails per month subject to a 100-per-day cap, and a Pro plan at $20 per month for 50,000 emails. The page also lists $0.90 per additional 1,000 emails on Pro. See the dated pricing comparison above and confirm current terms before committing.
Rank #2
Postmark
Postmark’s pricing page lists a free developer plan of 100 emails per month and Basic at $15 per month. It lists 45-day data retention and says transactional and marketing messages should not be mixed, with separate streams for transactional and broadcast email. Treat that separation as product guidance, not as a comparative deliverability result.
Twilio SendGrid
Twilio identifies SendGrid as its Email API within the broader Twilio communications product family. The official overview establishes the product category, but does not establish current plan prices or quotas. Check the current official pricing and documentation for the volume and features you need.
Mailgun
Mailgun publishes comparison pages about its product and alternatives. Those are vendor-authored materials, so positioning on them should be treated as company claims. Current plan details were not established here; verify pricing and capabilities on Mailgun’s official pages.
Rank #3
Amazon SES
Amazon SES lists à la carte outbound email at $0.10 per 1,000 emails. AWS lists possible separate charges for attachment data and optional services such as validation, dedicated IPs and deliverability management. Use the base rate as one input to a cost estimate, not as an all-in bill.
Brevo
Brevo appeared in the comparison field, but current plan details and features were not established from readable official pricing information. Check its official pricing and documentation before deciding whether it fits a developer API workflow or a combined sending need.
MailerSend
MailerSend appeared in a secondary comparison result, but current official product and pricing details were not established. Treat it as a candidate for further evaluation, not as a fully verified option in a ranked comparison.
Rank #4

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Estimate total cost at your expected volume
Model the bill using your normal month and a higher-volume month. Compare included messages and overages where published, then add any relevant charges for data, dedicated IPs or optional services. For the three providers with confirmed figures here, Resend’s listed Pro overage is $0.90 per additional 1,000 emails; SES’s $0.10-per-1,000 figure is its base à la carte outbound rate, with possible additional charges; Postmark’s cited Basic price does not by itself establish a comparable monthly sending allowance.

For Twilio SendGrid, Mailgun, Brevo and MailerSend, current prices and quotas are not established here, so a fair cost comparison requires checking their official pages. Do not compare an unverified historical price with a live plan price.

Check operational fit before choosing
Pricing alone does not establish how much work a team will own. Before selection, verify these items in the provider’s current documentation and plans:
- Sending workflow: confirm support for the exact message types, volume and event patterns you expect.
- Inbound email: if the application must receive and parse messages, verify that capability separately from outbound sending.
- Integration: check for a maintained SDK or documented API in your language and framework, along with the setup steps required by your application.
- Delivery visibility: confirm which delivery events, logs, webhooks and analytics are available and how long records are retained.
- Domain and reputation controls: check the authentication setup, sending controls, support options and any paid features your use case needs.
- Constraints: verify regional availability, data handling and compliance requirements against the provider’s current official documentation.
These details are not consistently established across the candidates here, so treat them as checks to perform rather than presumed advantages of any one service.
There is no supported deliverability winner
The available evidence does not establish an independently tested winner for inbox placement, delivery speed or overall deliverability among these providers. Vendor claims and non-comparable statistics should not be treated as head-to-head results. If deliverability is decisive, look for a test that names its publisher and date, describes its sample and method, and explains its caveats; otherwise evaluate the provider’s own documentation and monitor your own sending results.
