It is not an inbox: your app supplies the message and recipient, and the provider handles the email operation.
What an email API does
An email API is a programming interface for using an email provider’s services from an application. Instead of a person composing each message in a mail app, software submits the required details—such as a recipient and message content—to the provider through an API request or software development kit (SDK).

The provider may offer more than sending. Depending on the service, its capabilities can include receiving and routing messages, templates, or address validation. Those are provider-specific features, not requirements of every email API. Mailgun describes its email API as REST-oriented and documents SMTP as another integration option; its feature set also includes validation and template APIs (Mailgun’s email API overview).
How sending an email through an API works
- An event occurs. For example, someone creates an account, requests a password reset, or completes a purchase.
- The application prepares the message. It determines the recipient and content, which may be assembled from fields or a template.
- The application authenticates and submits a request. It sends the message details to the email provider using an API, an SDK, or another supported method.
- The provider processes the request. It may construct and send the email. Amazon Simple Email Service (SES), for example, documents a formatted API path that assembles a message from basic fields and a raw path for callers that supply headers and MIME content (AWS: Using the Amazon SES API to send email).
- The application checks available activity data. Providers may expose logs or analytics for sending activity. Acceptance of an API request does not by itself establish that a message reached a recipient’s inbox.
Common uses for an email API
Transactional messages
Applications commonly use email APIs for messages triggered by a specific user or system event: password-reset instructions, order confirmations and receipts, account notifications, and billing alerts. Mailgun and Twilio SendGrid both document these types of transactional email (Mailgun: Transactional Email API Service; Twilio SendGrid: Getting Started with Transactional Email).

Marketing messages and newsletters
An application can also use an email service to send newsletters or marketing messages. AWS lists special-offer marketing email and newsletters among Amazon SES use cases (AWS: What is Amazon SES?). Check the provider’s permissions and applicable sending rules before using a service for these messages.
Incoming mail and routing
Some services support receiving email and passing it into an application workflow. AWS lists autoresponders, unsubscribe systems, and applications that create support tickets from incoming messages as SES examples. This capability is not universal: confirm that a provider supports inbound mail and the routing behavior your application needs.
Templates and address validation
Some provider ecosystems offer APIs for reusable message templates or email-address validation in addition to sending. These can help an application standardize messages or check addresses, but their availability and behavior depend on the provider.
Email API versus SMTP
An API is often a direct fit when an application needs a software integration or provider-specific functionality. SMTP, the standard protocol used to submit email through a mail server, can be a practical fit for software that already supports SMTP or needs to connect to an existing mail-server workflow. These are alternatives to evaluate against your software stack and requirements, not a universal speed or reliability ranking.

Amazon SES documents both API and SMTP sending. Its API can be accessed through direct HTTPS requests, AWS SDKs, or command-line tools; AWS says its SDKs handle authentication, request signing, retries, and error handling. Mailgun also documents both a REST-oriented API and SMTP (AWS SES API sending options; Mailgun email API overview).
What to check before choosing an email API
- Integration method: Confirm whether your application can use the provider’s API or SDK, SMTP, or both.
- Message composition: Check whether you need templates, structured fields, or control over raw headers and MIME content.
- Inbound workflows: If the application must receive or route email, verify that the provider supports those functions.
- Operations and monitoring: Find out what sending logs or analytics are available and how they fit your support process.
- Authentication and operational fit: Review setup requirements and how the integration fits your existing cloud platform and development stack.
- Commercial and regional details: Check current pricing, quotas, and regional availability directly with the provider; these vary and are not established by feature descriptions alone.
