1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsElectronic describes a device or system that uses electrical signals to process, control, store, or communicate information. Electromechanical describes one that couples electrical and mechanical behavior, such as turning electrical input into motion or mechanical motion into an electrical signal. The terms are not opposites: an electromechanical device can also use electronic circuitry.
What distinguishes electronic from electromechanical?
The practical test is whether mechanical action is part of the device’s function. If its defining job is to handle electrical signals, “electronic” is usually the more useful description. If it converts between electrical and mechanical input or output, “electromechanical” describes that coupling.
The Acoustical Society of America defines an electromechanical transducer as a “Transducer designed to receive an electric input signal and to furnish a mechanical output signal, or vice versa.” The association’s glossary makes clear that conversion can run in either direction. IEEE likewise describes electromechanical devices as coupling electrical and mechanical processes, including conversion between electrical signals and motion: IEEE’s overview of electromechanical devices.
Examples of electromechanical devices
Motors and generators
A motor uses electrical input to produce rotation, while a generator uses mechanical rotation to produce electrical output. Both are electromechanical because they convert energy between electrical and mechanical forms. IEEE’s overview discusses this coupling.

Relays
In an electromechanical relay, an electrical control signal causes a physical mechanism to move and switch contacts. The moving contacts are the mechanical part; the signal that triggers them may be controlled by electronic circuitry. MIT OpenCourseWare’s control-systems material includes relay examples.
Microphones
A microphone converts sound-driven mechanical vibration into an electrical signal. It is therefore an electromechanical sensor or transducer, even when connected to an electronic amplifier or recording system. Cambridge University Press’s excerpt from Electromechanics and MEMS discusses microphones as electromechanical sensors.

How electronics fit into sensors, actuators, and MEMS
A sensor converts a physical quantity into a signal that an electronic system can interpret. An actuator uses an input to produce a physical effect. These components link physical behavior with electronic measurement or control, so a larger system may accurately be described as both electronic and electromechanical.
Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) combine mechanical and electrical behavior at small scales. Their sensors and actuators can connect with electronic circuits that measure or control them. The label depends on what part or function is being described, not simply on whether the device contains electrical components. IEEE’s overview and the Cambridge University Press excerpt provide further context.

A quick comparison
| Term | What it emphasizes | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic | Using electrical signals to process, control, store, or communicate information | Electronic control circuitry |
| Electromechanical | Coupling electrical and mechanical behavior, including conversion between signals and motion | Motor, generator, moving-contact relay, or microphone |
A device can fit both descriptions: a motor may be electromechanical in its conversion of electricity to motion and electronic in the circuitry that controls it. The distinction is about function, not whether electricity is present.
