The last value means the web-cookie policy SameSite=None; unspecified means no SameSite attribute is recorded. For cross-site cookie use, choose no_restriction and set secure: true, but remember that browser privacy controls can still block third-party cookies.
What Electron’s SameSite values mean
Electron exposes SameSite information on cookies through its session cookie API. Its four documented strings are unspecified, no_restriction, lax, and strict. Electron uses no_restriction where web-cookie terminology uses SameSite=None. The Electron Cookie Object reports these values; they are not four equivalent policy choices.
| Electron value | Web-cookie meaning | Cross-site behavior | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
strict |
SameSite=Strict |
Not sent on cross-site requests. | Even a link from another site into yours is cross-site for this purpose, so the cookie may not accompany that incoming navigation. |
lax |
SameSite=Lax |
Sent for same-site requests and qualifying top-level cross-site navigations using a safe method. | It is not the general allowance for cross-site fetches, subresources, iframe navigations, or unsafe methods such as POST. |
no_restriction |
SameSite=None |
Allows same-site and cross-site use under SameSite rules. | Requires the Secure attribute, and other privacy controls may still restrict the cookie. |
unspecified |
No SameSite attribute recorded. | The browser applies its default behavior. | It is not an explicit lax setting. Chromium-based browsers use Lax as the default for omitted attributes, but behavior can differ by browser context. |
For fuller descriptions of request types and cookie attributes, see MDN’s Set-Cookie SameSite reference.
Which value should you use?
Use lax for the usual default behavior
Electron’s cookies.set() documentation specifies lax as its default SameSite value. Lax is appropriate when the cookie should normally accompany same-site requests and qualifying user navigations from another site, but should not generally be sent with cross-site embedded requests.

Use strict when cross-site requests should not carry the cookie
Strict is the most restrictive of these explicit policies. It can be suitable when the cookie should only accompany same-site requests, but account for the user experience: someone arriving through an external link may not have the cookie available on that first navigation.
Use no_restriction for intended cross-site cookie use
When an integration genuinely needs a cookie on cross-site requests, use Electron’s no_restriction value and set secure: true. This corresponds to SameSite=None; Secure. It permits cross-site use under SameSite rules; it does not override third-party-cookie blocking or other browser privacy protections. MDN explains these separate restrictions in its third-party cookie reference.

Treat unspecified as absence, not as a policy choice
If a cookie reports unspecified, Electron is reporting that no SameSite attribute is recorded. Do not assume this is interchangeable with explicitly setting lax in every browser context; omitted-attribute defaults are browser behavior, not an explicit attribute on the cookie.
Setting a cross-site cookie in Electron
Electron exposes cookies through a Session object’s cookies property. The following API-shaped example sets a cookie with cross-site SameSite behavior and distinct security attributes:

await ses.cookies.set({
url: 'https://example.com',
name: 'session',
value: 'value',
sameSite: 'no_restriction',
secure: true,
httpOnly: true
})
Here, secure: true restricts transmission to secure schemes, while httpOnly: true prevents client-side cookie APIs from accessing the cookie. They address different concerns. The example does not guarantee availability in every third-party context.
Check the Electron Session documentation when selecting the session. A partition name beginning with persist: is persistent; a partition without that prefix is in memory. The WebContents and your cookie operations need to use the session whose store you intend to access.

- PURE UNCOATED ALUMINUM & SUPERIOR HEAT CONDUCTION: Crafted from 100% bare aluminum with NO chemical coatings – guarantees safe, toxin-free cooking. Engineered for lightning-fast, even heat distribution (up to 30% faster than steel!) for perfectly crispy cookies, golden roasted veggies, and juicy meats every time. The aluminum baking pans are made of thick and heavy aluminum, with a heavy rolled edge making this truly "commercial-grade"that provides maximized scratch resistance
- NO MORE BURNT BOTTOMS: They perform better than ordinary stainless steel baking pans in terms of heat resistance and cook everything evenly, withstand temperatures of up to 500ºF / 260ºC without warping. Foods bake evenly due to aluminum’s superior heat conductivity
- EAVY-DUTY 18-GAUGE CONSTRUCTION (0.8mm" THICK) – RESISTS WARPING! Premium extra-thick aluminum prevents bending in high-heat ovens. Reinforced rolled edges add rigidity + prevent cuts. Pro Tip: Avoid thermal shock – don’t transfer from hot oven to cold water! cookie sheets for baking will allow you to cook in bigger batches and in less time. Also great for your weekly meal preps. Works for all cooking techniques such as roasting, broiling, grilling, and dehydrating
- REINFORCED ENCAPSULATED SOLID CORE RIM: Reinforced encapsulated solid core steel rim prevents warping and adds strength also making it easy to remove from the oven. These aluminum pans have a tall side, which almost eliminates any splattering onto the oven floor, which is so common with a sheet cake pan. These baking trays are non-toxic, BPA-free, and food-safe, You can rest assured that these aluminum baking pans will give you the perfectly baked product every time
- NO MORE STICKY STAINS – EASY-CLEAN NATURAL PATINA: Hand-wash recommended (dishwasher use may cause harmless oxidation). Stubborn residue? Use baking soda paste or lemon juice! Developing a natural dark patina over time enhances flavor – like cast iron, but 70% lighter!
Why a third-party cookie may not be sent
SameSite=None removes the SameSite restriction on cross-site use, but it is not a promise that the browser will accept or send a third-party cookie. Browser privacy controls can block or limit third-party cookies independently of SameSite. A cookie can also appear to be missing if code is querying a different Electron session from the one used by the relevant WebContents.

Debug an Electron cookie step by step
- Inspect the cookie object. Use
cookies.get()and checksameSite,secure, domain, and other relevant fields. Electron documents the returned fields in its Cookie Object reference. - Verify the session. Confirm the cookie read and write operations use the same intended session or partition as the relevant
WebContents. Check whether the partition is persistent or in memory in the Session documentation. - Classify the request. Determine whether it is same-site, a top-level cross-site navigation, a cross-site fetch or subresource, an iframe navigation, or an unsafe-method request such as POST. Lax does not cover all these cases.
- For cross-site use, check both settings. Confirm the cookie is configured with
sameSite: 'no_restriction'andsecure: true. - Check the actual runtime and privacy settings. Test with the Electron release and bundled Chromium version you ship, along with the relevant privacy settings. Electron and Chromium behavior can evolve, so consult the documentation for the Electron major version you target.
