An electric kettle is the better fit if you want fast, convenient boiling without using the hob. A stovetop kettle may suit you if you prefer its look or sound, and your hob is compatible. Neither type is universally more energy-efficient: the most useful saving for either is to heat only the water you need.
How do electric and stovetop kettles compare?
| What matters | Electric kettle | Stovetop kettle |
|---|---|---|
| Boiling time | Faster in Ideal Home’s test: its electric kettle boiled 1.7 litres in 4 minutes 18 seconds. | Slower in the same test: the stovetop kettle took 7 minutes 3 seconds on an induction hob. Both results concern the specific products and setup tested, not every kettle or heat source. Ideal Home’s comparison |
| Where it goes | Needs a suitable countertop spot and power connection. | Uses hob space and must suit your heat source; check the individual kettle’s compatibility. |
| Energy and cost | Actual use depends on how much water you heat, the appliance and your electricity rate. | Actual use also depends on the hob and kettle. The cited test does not establish a general efficiency winner. |
| Cleaning and noise | Performance varies by model and access to the interior. | Ideal Home’s reviewer found the tested model quieter during most of the boil and easier to clean thoroughly, but noted its whistle at boiling. These are observations about that product, not universal findings. Ideal Home’s cleaning and noise notes |
| Everyday convenience | Many electric kettles switch off automatically at boiling or a preset temperature below 100°C; features vary, so check the instructions. University of Strathclyde research paper (2016) | Fits a routine built around using the hob; it does not use an electric kettle base. |
Which type boils water faster?
In Ideal Home’s comparison, the tested electric kettle boiled 1.7 litres in 4 minutes 18 seconds. Its stovetop kettle took 7 minutes 3 seconds on an induction hob. That is useful evidence if speed matters, but it is not a controlled ranking of kettle types across different products, hob settings or heat sources. Your results can differ.

Which uses less energy or costs less to run?
The available comparison does not show a universal winner. Ideal Home calculated 5.67p for its tested full electric kettle and 5.57p for its stovetop kettle on induction, using an assumed electricity price of 26.35 p/kWh. Those figures apply only to its products, setup and price assumption; they are not current prices or a general cost comparison. See the test and its calculation

What should you consider before choosing?
Hob compatibility and kitchen space
A stovetop kettle takes up hob space, and its performance depends on both the kettle and the heat source. The cited timing comparison used induction, so do not assume the same result for gas or a conventional electric hob. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying. An electric kettle instead needs a suitable counter location and power connection.

Noise, cleaning and limescale
Noise and ease of cleaning can matter as much as boiling time if you use your kettle frequently. Ideal Home’s reviewer found the tested stovetop kettle quieter during most of its boil and easier to clean thoroughly, while noting that it whistles when the water boils. Treat those comments as one reviewer’s experience with one model, not a guarantee about stovetop kettles generally. In hard-water areas, consider how easily you can reach the kettle’s interior to clean away limescale.

Automatic shut-off and routine
Electric kettles are self-contained appliances; a 2016 University of Strathclyde paper describes them as switching off automatically at boiling or at a preset temperature below 100°C. Which kettle should you choose?
- Choose an electric kettle if quick boiling and a convenient countertop appliance matter most. The direct test favoured the electric model for speed, but only for the products and conditions tested.
- Choose a stovetop kettle if you prefer that format and have a compatible hob. The reviewer’s cleaning and noise observations may be useful, but they are not a general performance guarantee.
- Choose by your actual routine if neither distinction is decisive: consider counter and hob space, the heat source you have, cleaning access, and the sound you prefer.
How to save energy with either kettle
- Measure or estimate the water you need for the drinks or cooking you are making.
- Fill the kettle with no more than that amount, within the model’s minimum and maximum fill marks.
- If your routine involves boiling different amounts, check whether an electric model’s instructions describe a setting that matches your needs; do not assume features are identical across models.
