By shifting tropical rainfall and winds, they change the odds of weather patterns far beyond the Pacific. Their clearest simple contrast for many U.S. readers is in winter, but neither phase guarantees what a particular place will experience.
What is the difference between El Niño and La Niña?
Both are phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a recurring ocean-atmosphere pattern in the tropical Pacific. El Niño involves unusually warm sea-surface water in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, along with changes in the atmosphere. La Niña is the cool phase, with cooler-than-average water in that region and a different atmospheric response. They are not separate weather systems that dictate a forecast; they tilt the background odds of weather patterns.

NOAA says El Niño occurs on average every two to seven years and typically lasts nine to twelve months. Those are broad averages, not a fixed schedule or a guarantee of how long a future episode will last. NOAA’s overview describes an operational monitoring criterion of Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperatures at least 0.5°C above normal for five consecutive overlapping three-month periods, together with an atmospheric response. For formal event status, consult the current NOAA Climate Prediction Center definition, since indices and methods can evolve. NOAA: What are El Niño and La Niña?

In normal conditions, trade winds help push warm surface water westward across the equatorial Pacific, and moist air rises over the warm western Pacific. During El Niño, the trade winds weaken and warm water shifts east. The zone of tropical rainfall and rising air also moves toward the central and eastern Pacific. During La Niña, cooler central and eastern Pacific waters favor rising moist air farther west, around Indonesia and the western Pacific.

These changes in tropical heating affect circulation that links the tropics with middle latitudes, including the jet streams. The result is a remote influence on weather patterns, not a direct line from ocean temperature to a guaranteed local outcome. NOAA Climate.gov: El Niño and La Niña Frequently Asked Questions
How do El Niño and La Niña affect U.S. winter weather?
For the United States, ENSO’s influence is often strongest in winter, especially January through March, and can linger into early spring. El Niño tends to favor warmer conditions across the northern tier and cooler, wetter conditions across much of the southern tier. La Niña often tilts those broad tendencies the other way.

That is a useful regional comparison, not an exact reversal or a town-by-town forecast. The pattern varies from one event to another, and other climate influences and event strength matter. For decisions about a specific season or location, use a current NOAA seasonal outlook rather than treating the ENSO phase as a forecast on its own. NOAA Climate.gov: How ENSO affects U.S. weather

| Region or effect | El Niño tendency | La Niña tendency |
| U.S. winter | Often warmer in the northern tier; cooler and wetter across much of the southern tier. | Broad tendencies are approximately reversed in many areas, but not everywhere. |
| Tropical Pacific rainfall | Rising moist air and convection shift toward the central and eastern Pacific. | The main zone of rising moist air tends to be over Indonesia and the western Pacific. |
| Australia and Indonesia | Drier conditions and drought risk are common associations in some events. | Rainfall tendencies often shift in the opposite direction. |
| Coastal Ecuador and Peru | Heavy rainfall can occur during El Niño years. | The tendency is generally unlike the El Niño wet signal. |
| Atlantic hurricanes | Fewer hurricanes tend to form or develop. | More Atlantic activity is favored relative to El Niño conditions. |
| Eastern and central Pacific hurricanes | More activity tends to be favored. | Fewer tend to occur relative to El Niño conditions. |
These are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every country, month, season, or storm. Regional conditions and the details of an individual event matter. NOAA Climate.gov: How ENSO affects weather patterns NOAA Ocean Service: El Niño and La Niña effects

What does ENSO mean for hurricane seasons?
ENSO tends to shift hurricane activity in opposite directions across the Atlantic and eastern or central Pacific basins. El Niño generally suppresses Atlantic hurricane activity while favoring activity in the eastern and central Pacific; La Niña tends toward the reverse. These are basin-level seasonal odds, not predictions of whether a particular storm will form, where it will travel, or whether it will make landfall. NOAA Climate.gov: ENSO and hurricanes
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can the phase predict weather in your town?
No. ENSO can make some patterns more or less likely, but it cannot by itself tell you whether your town will get rain, snow, drought, a heat wave, or a hurricane. Events differ in strength and in their regional effects. As NOAA National Weather Service director Ken Graham said in a June 11, 2026 release, “Every El Nino is not the same; each one is unique with its own imprint on our weather,” NOAA release, June 11, 2026. That release’s advisory and forecast were specific to that date and should not be read as current status.
