Current reports attribute the release to International Animal Rescue Indonesia (YIARI) and Indonesia’s forestry ministry, but the accessible reporting does not establish the animals’ release site, individual histories or subsequent survival.
What is known about the reported release
Search-result summaries from KeNews and BBC News reporting describe eight orangutans released in western Borneo after fires threatened their habitat. The summaries attribute the operation to YIARI and the forestry ministry. Because the underlying reports were not available in full for verification, details beyond those points remain unconfirmed.

A search-result summary also says Indonesian authorities rescued 46 critically endangered primates in August and September 2026. That figure is reported secondhand here and should not be treated as a confirmed count of orangutans or as a count of animals released.
Do not confuse this with a separate June release
In a distinct operation, the BOS Foundation announced on June 18, 2026, that it had released five rehabilitated orangutans into Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park in Central Kalimantan. They were three females and two males from the Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation center, assessed as ready to live independently. BOS described it as the 47th release from that center.

One of the five, Himba, had been rescued as an infant with severe burns after a forest fire and spent 14 years in rehabilitation. That history belongs to the June BOS release; it is not evidence about any of the eight orangutans reported released in western Borneo.
How fires affect orangutans and other wildlife
Wildfires can destroy food and shelter, force animals into exposed or human-used areas, and leave them with burns or smoke-related injuries. An Associated Press report dated October 10, 2026, described separate rescue cases in Borneo: Novita, a three- to four-year-old female, was found clinging to a nearly leafless tree in Central Kalimantan with burns likely sustained while crossing scorched ground. She received oxygen and intravenous fluids and was taken to Nyaru Menteng. The foundation planned to assess her climbing and survival ability after her burns healed.

Why wildfire figures vary
Published burned-area estimates cover different periods and use different methods, so they are not interchangeable. AP’s October 10 report cited more than 202,000 hectares burned from January through July 2026, based on Indonesian government data, and a separate Nusantara Atlas satellite-monitoring estimate of nearly 896,000 hectares by the end of August 2026. The latter covers a longer period and is an independent estimate.

AP also reported that Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry had counted more than 270 wild animals in Kalimantan rescued, rehabilitated or guided to safer habitats as of October 10, 2026. That is a multi-species figure, not an orangutan-only total. The report linked worsening fires to a prolonged dry season intensified by El Niño and said water shortages hampered firefighting. It also reported smoke drift reaching the Philippines and an emergency declaration in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo; these conditions and counts can change.

Rescue, rehabilitation and release are different stages. The BOS Foundation’s separate June account illustrates that rehabilitation can include assessing whether an animal is ready to live independently before release into a protected area. It also emphasizes habitat protection, effective management, collaboration with local communities and post-release monitoring. Those details provide conservation context, not proof of the exact process used for the reported group of eight.
