“Double E PROM” is a way to pronounce EEPROM, which stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. It is non-volatile memory, so it keeps its stored data when power is off. Unlike EPROM, which is generally erased with ultraviolet light, EEPROM is erased electrically.
What does EEPROM mean?
EEPROM expands to Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. The name describes a type of memory whose contents can be erased electrically and programmed again. “Double E PROM” says the acronym aloud: the two initial E letters are spoken separately before “PROM.”

Other documented pronunciations include “e-e-prom,” “e-squared,” and “e-prom.” These are ways of saying the same acronym, not separate memory technologies. Rajeev Gandhi Memorial College of Engineering and Technology’s memory-system material lists these pronunciation variants.
What does EEPROM do?
EEPROM stores information without needing a continuous power supply. Microchip Technology’s glossary describes it as retaining its contents when power is turned off, and says data is written or erased one byte at a time. That is a general glossary description; the actual organization and operating limits depend on the specific device. Consult the part’s datasheet for implementation details.

For an example of its use, General Motors’ 2014 TIS2Web glossary describes EEPROM as memory used in computers such as a vehicle engine controller, holding information the computer needs to run. That example does not mean every controller uses the same memory component or that it is intended for user servicing.
How is EEPROM different from EPROM?

Is EEPROM the same as PROM?
No. PROM is the broader name for programmable read-only memory; EEPROM identifies a type that can be erased electrically and programmed again. EPROM is another distinct type, generally erased with ultraviolet light. The similar names are easy to mix up, but the erasure method is the key difference established here.
