Edge vs. Cloud Performance for Physical AI: How to Place Robot Workloads

Edge and cloud performance for robots depends on the whole workload and network path. Learn what the published measurements show and how to choose compute placement.

For physical AI, edge versus cloud performance is a workload-placement decision, not a contest between accelerator specs. On-robot compute avoids a remote network round trip and can keep a robot operating when connectivity fails. Nearby edge servers and cloud services can add compute or reduce the robot’s processing burden, but introduce communication delays, bandwidth needs, and dependence on the network. The right design is the one that completes the task reliably under the actual power, timing, and connectivity conditions.

What “performance” means for a robot

A robot’s useful result is an action completed correctly within the task’s timing needs—not an inference score or peak accelerator throughput in isolation. In an offloaded system, the relevant path can include sensor-data transfer, network and server queues, inference, transmission of the result back to the robot, and the robot’s response. A fast remote GPU cannot compensate if data cannot arrive in time or the returned action is no longer useful.

Compare deployments using end-to-end response time and its variation, task success under realistic delays, data volume and bandwidth, onboard power draw and battery runtime, compute and thermal limits, and behavior during network interruptions. Privacy, security, safety design, physical constraints, and operating cost also matter, but must be evaluated for the specific system.

Where computation can run

Placement What it offers Main trade-offs
On-robot compute Processes data near sensors and actuators; avoids a remote inference round trip and can support local operation without internet access. Compute capacity, power, cooling, weight, and cost constrain the hardware and workload. [Microsoft Research, MSR-TR-2026-14; NVIDIA edge computing]
Nearby edge server Adds compute outside the robot while potentially keeping the communication path shorter than a distant cloud path. Still depends on a network, whose delay, capacity, and failure behavior must be measured in the deployment environment. The cited sources establish no universal latency figure for nearby edge.
Cloud service Can provide remote compute and scalable resources for some inference and development workloads. Live inference depends on network latency and bandwidth. Delays can reduce task accuracy, and the data-transfer requirement can make simple offloading impractical. [Microsoft Research, MSR-TR-2026-14]
Hybrid placement Keeps selected processing on the robot while assigning other workloads to a nearby edge server or cloud. Requires explicit decisions about what runs where, what happens when links fail, and how results are validated. Distribution is an engineering pattern to test, not a guarantee of safety or performance. [Microsoft Research, September 23, 2026]

What the published measurements do—and do not—show

Mobile manipulation can strain onboard platforms

Microsoft Research’s March 2026 measurement study, MSR-TR-2026-14, reports that the full mobile robotic manipulation workload stack it studied was infeasible on smaller onboard GPUs. That finding applies to the study’s workloads and configurations; it does not establish that every smaller GPU, robot, or physical-AI task is infeasible.

Offloading can trade local power for network dependence

The study summary says larger onboard GPUs drained robot batteries several hours faster in the evaluated configurations. Microsoft’s September 2026 article gives a more specific illustration: for a Stretch-3 comparison using a Raspberry Pi 5 and inference offload, it reports battery-lifetime improvements of over 100%, and up to 160% in the described comparison. These are configuration-specific results, not general battery-life guarantees; different robots, workloads, hardware, and network conditions can produce different outcomes. The same article discusses distributing inference across robot compute, an edge GPU, and cloud, with example material including Jetson Thor. [Microsoft Research, September 23, 2026]

Latency and bandwidth can erase the apparent compute advantage

Microsoft’s study summary warns that “additional network latency degrades task accuracy, and the bandwidth requirement makes naive cloud offloading impractical.” The practical implication is to evaluate both task outcomes and the full communication path, rather than assuming a more powerful remote accelerator will improve the robot’s performance. The published sources do not establish one cross-platform latency number or a general “edge is X times faster” result.

How to decide what belongs on the robot

Start from workload timing and connectivity requirements, then test candidate placements in the intended environment. These steps are an engineering decision process, not a universal safety prescription.

  1. Define the task outcome. Specify what counts as success, what response timing the task needs, and which failures are unacceptable. Measure task success, not only model throughput.
  2. Map the full data path. Record which sensor inputs must be sent, their volume and frequency, where inference runs, and what results must return before the robot can act.
  3. Measure representative conditions. Record end-to-end latency distributions and task outcomes under realistic network load, weak or variable connectivity, and interruptions. There is no single latency cutoff established for all robots.
  4. Compare power and hardware constraints. Measure the workload’s onboard power and thermal burden alongside battery runtime, compute demand, and physical limits. Use results from the target robot and configuration rather than generalizing from another platform.
  5. Specify disconnected behavior. Decide which functions continue locally, which pause or degrade, and how the system handles stale or missing remote results. Validate these behaviors as part of the deployment design.
  6. Choose placement per workload. Keep functions that must operate locally or meet timing needs without a network on the robot. Consider offloading workloads when the additional compute or reduced onboard burden justifies the measured communication cost.

When each placement is a reasonable fit

Favor on-robot processing when connectivity cannot be assumed

If a robot must continue operating through a network outage, it needs local capability for the functions required during that outage. Onboard processing also avoids the remote inference round trip. The trade-off is fitting the workload within the robot’s compute, power, thermal, weight, and cost limits. The relevant hardware and offline-operation claims should be checked against the chosen platform and deployment, not inferred from a product category alone. Consider a nearby edge GPU when local compute is constrained

A facility or local edge server may provide more compute without relying on a distant cloud route. It still requires reliable connectivity between robot and server, and it does not remove the need to measure latency, bandwidth, and failure behavior. The available sources do not provide a universal nearby-edge performance advantage or a standard latency value.

Use cloud selectively for live inference

Remote inference can reduce the compute burden carried by the robot, but the system must send the needed inputs and receive a useful result in time. Test under representative network load and interruptions; do not infer live-control suitability from cloud capacity alone.

Separate cloud development work from live control

Cloud resources can serve development workloads such as data curation, synthetic-data generation, model evaluation, and fleet-level aggregation without being in a robot’s real-time control loop. NVIDIA’s March 16, 2026 Physical AI Data Factory Blueprint announcement describes development-scale workflows and names Azure and Nebius as collaborators. That announcement supports cloud’s role in development infrastructure; it does not establish either service as best for live robot control.

How to interpret hardware claims

Specifications can describe a platform’s capability, but they do not predict end-to-end task success in a particular robot. For example, NVIDIA’s current IGX industrial-grade edge AI platform page lists IGX Thor at up to 5,581 FP4 TFLOPS and presents manufacturer comparisons with IGX Orin. These are NVIDIA product specifications and claims, not independent benchmark results or evidence of a specific robot’s latency, battery runtime, or task accuracy. A developer kit can be useful for evaluation, but its presence does not make it a universal hardware recommendation.
