For decisions that must stay responsive through network delays or outages, run inference on the device or a nearby edge system; use the cloud for centralized training, management, heavier processing, and longer-term analysis. The best placement depends on measured end-to-end latency, connectivity, compute limits, data handling, and operating requirements. Edge and cloud are not mutually exclusive choices for an entire AI system.
What edge AI and cloud AI mean
Edge AI runs model inference on or near the device that produces the data. That can mean the device itself, a gateway serving several devices, or an edge node in a regional location. Cloud AI runs inference in centralized cloud data centers. These terms describe where computation happens, not necessarily where a model is trained or how the whole system is managed.

A common hybrid design trains and versions models centrally, deploys them to local devices for time-sensitive decisions, and sends selected events or summaries to the cloud for monitoring and analysis. The cloud can remain useful without sitting in the path of every immediate decision. AWS describes this pattern for AWS IoT Greengrass: “With AWS IoT Greengrass, you can perform machine learning (ML) inference on your edge devices on locally generated data using cloud-trained models.” That is a documented product capability, not an independent performance comparison.

How to choose where inference runs
Latency: measure the whole decision path
Local inference can avoid a round trip to a remote service, but placement alone does not determine response time. Preprocessing, model size, local compute, network hops, and downstream decision logic all contribute. A nearby network-edge location may be sufficient when inference on each device is impractical.

Set an end-to-end latency budget and benchmark the complete application on representative hardware and network conditions. AWS says its Local Zones support “single-digit millisecond latency” for listed use cases; treat that as an AWS claim about its described infrastructure and use cases, not a guarantee for another workload or a general edge-versus-cloud result: AWS Local Zones.
Connectivity and resilience
A local system can keep making decisions during a network interruption if the model, required inputs, and decision logic are available locally. A cloud-only inference path depends on connectivity to the service. Plan what happens when a connection drops: whether the system buffers data, enters a degraded mode, continues locally, or pauses; and how it synchronizes state after recovery.
Compute and model capacity
Cloud infrastructure provides access to pooled compute and centralized services. Edge hardware varies widely and may impose limits on model size, throughput, memory, power, and thermal headroom. Test the actual workload on the intended device rather than assuming it will meet the target. Google Cloud’s infrastructure guidance treats real-time inference as a workload-specific infrastructure choice: real-time inference on Google Cloud.
Published device benchmarks are configuration-specific. NVIDIA’s Jetson inference results are tied to particular hardware and software setups, so they should not be generalized to different configurations or compared with cloud results unless the measurements use aligned workloads and conditions: NVIDIA Jetson benchmarks.

Data movement and privacy
Processing near the source can reduce how much raw data travels over a network and may help keep information local. It does not automatically make a system secure or compliant. Assess the full data flow, including access controls, retention, residency, telemetry, and the rules that apply to the information being processed.
Operations and total cost
An edge deployment adds distributed-device work: provisioning, model updates, monitoring, and hardware lifecycle management. Cloud inference relies on remote services and network transfer instead. Compare the total operating cost of the actual deployment, including infrastructure, connectivity, maintenance, and failure handling. Latency alone does not establish which option costs less.

On-device inference
Run inference on the device when decisions must happen at the data source, connectivity is unreliable, or raw inputs should not routinely leave the device. The trade-off is that model and hardware capacity are constrained by the specific platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGateway or site inference
Use a nearby gateway or site server when several local devices can share compute, or when an individual device cannot host the needed model. This introduces a local network hop but avoids sending every decision request to a distant cloud service.

Network-edge inference
Choose a network-edge service when users or mobile devices need a nearby inference endpoint but running the model on each device is unnecessary. AWS describes Local Zones and Wavelength as options for particular latency-sensitive workloads; the result for any application still depends on its actual network path and workload.
Cloud inference
Run inference in the cloud when centralized compute and services suit the workload and the network path meets its timing and availability requirements. Cloud infrastructure can also handle training, orchestration, model versioning, and heavier analysis in a hybrid architecture.
A practical decision process
- Define the timing requirement. Set the maximum acceptable end-to-end response time and identify which parts of the application are included in that budget.
- Measure the real path. Benchmark preprocessing, inference, networking, and downstream actions on representative devices and under realistic connectivity conditions.
- Test disconnection behavior. Decide whether the system must continue locally, buffer inputs, degrade gracefully, or stop safely, and test synchronization after a connection returns.
- Validate the target hardware. Check that the model meets throughput, memory, power, and thermal needs on the device or edge node you plan to use.
- Map the data lifecycle. Document what stays local, what is transmitted, how long it is retained, and which access and residency controls apply.
- Compare operational designs. Include fleet management and updates for edge deployments, as well as cloud services and network transfer, in the total-cost assessment.
- Keep responsibilities hybrid where useful. Centralize training and model management while placing only the time-critical inference and decision logic locally when the measurements justify it.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
There is no general-purpose latency statistic that proves edge AI is always faster than cloud AI for real-time decisions. A local model may avoid a remote network trip, but the winning architecture depends on the application’s complete measured path. Likewise, the available architecture guidance does not establish a workload-independent cost winner.
For prototyping local inference, NVIDIA documents Jetson Orin variants and edge AI workflows: Jetson Orin. Choose hardware only after checking the actual model, sensors, throughput, power, thermal conditions, and latency target; no single development kit is established as suitable for every production workload.
