The term describes where the work happens—not a particular model or a requirement that the device train itself.
What edge AI means
An edge can be a camera, phone, vehicle computer, industrial gateway, or another node close to the source of data. An edge AI system may run a model on the device itself or on a nearby network node. IEEE Technology Navigator describes this placement as running machine-learning models on or near the data-generating device, instead of in a centralized cloud data center (IEEE Technology Navigator: Edge AI).

Edge AI is therefore a location-oriented umbrella term, not one model architecture. A system can divide work among a device, nearby edge infrastructure, and the cloud; edge and cloud computing are not mutually exclusive.
Does edge AI train models on the device?
No. Edge AI can mean inference at the edge without training there. Inference is the use of a trained model to produce an output—for example, identifying an object in a camera feed. The model may have been created or trained elsewhere and then deployed to the edge device.

NIST distinguishes this basic use from edge learning. At the base level, edge nodes use AI and machine-learning functions created elsewhere; at a higher level, nodes use locally held data to help build models for themselves or other network entities and applications. The amount of participation depends on the system’s design. See NIST’s Edge AI project.
How edge AI differs from cloud AI
The distinction is primarily where computation occurs. With cloud AI, work relies on centralized cloud infrastructure. With edge AI, at least some AI computation takes place on or near the data source. A hybrid system can send selected data or tasks to the cloud while handling other work locally.

That placement can reduce reliance on network round trips and the need to transmit raw sensor or video streams. It may also let a system continue some functions during a connection failure. These are possible benefits, not guarantees: results depend on the model, task, network, and implementation. An edge system may still need connectivity for updates, cloud services, or other operations.
What edge AI can—and cannot—offer
- Responsiveness: Local computation may avoid some network delay, but actual response time depends on both the workload and the system.
- Less raw-data transmission: Processing near the source may reduce how much sensor or video data must be sent elsewhere. The system may still transmit selected outputs or other information.
- Potentially narrower data exposure: Keeping some data local can limit its movement, but edge AI is not inherently private. Data handling and security depend on the implementation.
- Some operation without a connection: A device can potentially perform functions locally during network loss, but offline behavior depends on what the system requires from remote services.
Constraints that shape an edge deployment
Edge devices have finite compute, memory, and power. A model or workload that fits a cloud environment may not fit a particular device, so deployment choices must account for the hardware, software support, and task.

NIST also identifies challenges in edge learning: limited resources, data that differs across nodes, privacy needs, communication constraints, and security vulnerabilities. Those issues matter when deciding where to run computation and, especially, whether and how devices should learn from local data.
When assessing a design, consider its response time under real network conditions, compute and memory needs, power use, the volume and sensitivity of transmitted data, behavior during connectivity loss, model-update process, and security. No single advantage follows automatically from calling a system “edge AI.”

Where edge AI standards work stands
As of the project information retrieved on October 7, 2026, two IEEE projects address edge deployment, but both are works in development rather than completed standards.
- IEEE P4154 is an active project approved June 4, 2026. Its intended scope is interfaces for cross-platform AI-model deployment on edge devices, including model input, model description, execution, and output interfaces. See the IEEE P4154 project page.
- IEEE P3342 is an active project approved March 30, 2023. It addresses functional requirements for an edge-model deployment toolchain, including frontend/backend adaptation, model compression, graph optimization, compiler optimization, and runtime optimization. See the IEEE P3342 project page.
NIST’s Edge AI project page, updated August 12, 2026, is marked completed. Its stated work included edge and collaborative-learning algorithms and methods for measuring performance and robustness (NIST Edge AI).
