Neither option guarantees a particular speed or flight time: fit, total system mass, electrical demand and the designer’s validated setup determine whether it works.
Start with the airframe, not the propulsion label
An EDF (electric ducted fan) is a motor-driven fan inside a duct. It suits a fuselage designed with an inlet, internal duct and outlet. A propeller is exposed and needs a suitable mount and clearance, commonly in a nose- or pusher-prop layout. These arrangements are not automatically interchangeable: replacing one with the other can require changes to the airframe, not just a different motor.

FMS describes propeller setups as generally more energy efficient and EDFs as suited to jet-style aircraft and speed-oriented flying. That is a broad vendor comparison, not a controlled test on your printed model. OWLplane’s SuperJet illustrates the EDF layout: its design specifies a 70 mm fan unit with motor. That specification is specific to the SuperJet, not proof of fit in another aircraft. See FMS’s EDF guide and OWLplane’s SuperJet page.
How the options compare
| Decision factor | EDF | Propeller |
|---|---|---|
| Airframe fit | Best suited to a design with a matched inlet, duct and outlet. | Requires a designed nose or pusher mount and appropriate propeller clearance. |
| Appearance and priority | Fits a jet-like silhouette and is often chosen for speed-oriented flying, without guaranteeing a specific speed. | Leaves the propeller visible; the cited vendor comparison presents it as generally more energy efficient. |
| System matching | Fan, motor, duct geometry, ESC and battery must work together. | Motor, propeller, ESC and battery must suit the aircraft and its mounting arrangement. |
| Evidence for this printed jet | OWLplane’s SuperJet specifies a 70 mm EDF unit with motor; this does not establish compatibility with other designs. | A same-airframe EDF-versus-propeller test and validated propeller setup are not established. |
How to decide for your build
- Check the designer’s propulsion specification. Use the power system and installation guidance validated for the exact aircraft. If the design specifies an EDF and duct, do not assume a propeller conversion will work without design guidance.
- Confirm physical fit. For an EDF, check fan dimensions and the airframe’s inlet, duct and outlet. For a propeller, confirm the mount, propeller clearance and placement supported by the design.
- Match the complete electrical system. Select the motor, fan or propeller, ESC and battery together. For EDFs, fan diameter alone is not enough: also check cell count, current capability and the supplier’s motor application chart. Efflux RC directs users to manufacturer charts for motor and cell-count data; E-flite’s 90 mm EDF is an example of a fan, motor, ESC and ducting specified as a package. Neither is a substitute for the printed aircraft designer’s setup. See Efflux RC’s EDF systems guidance and E-flite’s 90 mm EDF example.
- Account for mass and balance. Compare the complete installed system, including motor, ESC and battery, and check that component placement can preserve the aircraft’s specified center of gravity. OWLplane’s ViperJet guidance notes the importance of battery and ESC placement for the suggested CG; follow the instructions for your own model. See OWLplane’s ViperJet page.
- Use the printed-airframe material guidance for that model. OWLplane generally calls for lightweight filament such as LW-PLA, ePLA-LW or PolyLight for its SuperJet. This is model-specific advice, not a universal material rule for printed RC aircraft.
What performance you can—and cannot—predict
There is no measured, apples-to-apples EDF-versus-propeller flight test for the same 3D-printed RC jet in the available evidence. That means no defensible comparison can promise this airframe’s thrust-to-weight ratio, current draw, flight time, top speed, launch method or takeoff distance. Even broad efficiency and speed tendencies can change with the aircraft, system and setup.

- Cool appearance. This rc jet is made of durable EPP foam material, lightweight and not easy to damage. It features a striking design, and is easy to assemble.
Use the aircraft designer’s validated power-system data rather than extrapolating from fan diameter or another model. If the design does not provide a confirmed setup, treat those performance figures as unknown until the complete aircraft and power system are validated.

If your 3D-printed jet was designed around an EDF, use the specified fan size and a compatible motor, ESC and battery, then verify duct fit, installed mass and CG. If your chosen airframe was designed for a propeller, keep to its intended mount and clearance rather than assuming an EDF is an upgrade. A 70 mm EDF unit with motor is a reasonable search starting point only for a design that actually calls for that class; verify dimensions, voltage, current, ESC rating, battery and compatibility against the designer’s instructions before buying.
