If your ecobee thermostat keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi, first check whether it has lost the connection to your router, to ecobee.com, or both. Then confirm Wi-Fi is enabled, reconnect to the correct network, and check that its band and security mode work with your exact thermostat model. These steps help separate a local Wi-Fi problem from an online-service connection issue.
1. Check which connection is dropping
An ecobee thermostat reports its connection to the Wi-Fi router separately from its connection to ecobee.com. Check both indicators on the thermostat before changing router settings. If the router connection is down, focus first on the local network. If the router connection is up but ecobee.com is not, the thermostat is on Wi-Fi but is not reaching ecobee’s online service.

Menu paths vary by model. For several models, network details are under About > WiFi; Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential use a different path. Use the model-specific directions in ecobee’s Wi-Fi setup and troubleshooting guide.
2. Make sure the Wi-Fi radio is on
In the thermostat’s network settings, check that Wi-Fi Radio is enabled. If it is off, turn it on and recheck both connection indicators. A disabled radio prevents the thermostat from joining the router regardless of whether the network name and password are correct.

Open the Wi-Fi network screen on the thermostat, select the network you intend to use, and enter its current password. Wait for the thermostat to show that it connected, then check the router and ecobee.com statuses again.
If the router password changed recently, the thermostat’s saved credentials may no longer match. Re-enter the current password rather than assuming the network itself is unavailable.

4. Check the Wi-Fi band for your model
Ecobee says most thermostat models should use a 2.4 GHz network. Its Wi-Fi guidance identifies Smart Thermostat Premium, Smart Thermostat Enhanced, and SmartThermostat with voice control as 5 GHz compatible. Check your exact model before trying to connect it to 5 GHz; do not assume every ecobee thermostat supports that band.

5. Check the router’s security mode

6. Check signal strength where the thermostat is installed
Use the thermostat’s Wi-Fi signal reading to assess coverage at its location. Ecobee notes that signal strength can help identify dropped connections. If the reading is weak, poor local coverage is a plausible cause; a Wi-Fi extender or mesh node placed to improve coverage near the thermostat may be worth considering. This is a conditional option, not a guaranteed fix, and it will not correct an incorrect password, unsupported band or security mode, or a problem reaching ecobee.com.

What happens while an ecobee thermostat is offline?
Ecobee says an offline thermostat can still operate as a traditional thermostat and maintain comfort setpoints. Internet-dependent access and features may be unavailable until it reconnects, including mobile-app and web-portal control, weather data, Home IQ and System Monitor reports or runtime data, and integrations such as HomeKit or Alexa that require a stable connection. Pairing an ecobee SmartSensor also requires the thermostat and ecobee app to be on the same Wi-Fi connection. For details, see ecobee’s Wi-Fi FAQ.
