Ecash can make Bitcoin payments more private, but privacy does not by itself give users control of the bitcoin backing their tokens. Cashu relies on a mint to redeem its tokens; Fedimint distributes custody across a federation of guardians, with threshold rules that limit unilateral control but do not eliminate trust. The available project documentation does not establish that ecash adoption is rising across the ecosystem.
What ecash changes—and what it does not
Ecash is a token-based way to make payments. In the Bitcoin systems discussed here, users receive and transfer tokens issued against bitcoin held by a mint or federation. That can make payments easier to route through participating software, but the token is not the same thing as personally holding the signing authority for the bitcoin behind it.

Cashu describes itself as a free, open-source Chaumian ecash protocol built for Bitcoin. Its protocol documentation describes a mint and wallet: the mint signs blinded token material, a holder transfers a token to a recipient, and the recipient presents it for redemption. The protocol uses Blind Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange (BDHKE) and a spent-secret list to prevent spent tokens from being redeemed again.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Cashu and Fedimint have different custody models
| Question | Cashu | Fedimint |
|---|---|---|
| Who issues ecash? | A mint, used with a Cashu-compatible wallet. | A federation of guardians operating mint and other modules. |
| Where is the backing bitcoin held? | With the mint that issued the tokens; redemption depends on that mint. | In a threshold multisignature wallet controlled collectively by the federation. |
| What privacy mechanism do the project documents describe? | Chaumian blind signatures using BDHKE, intended to prevent the mint from linking a withdrawal to a later spend. | Blindly signed ecash notes; project materials describe unlinkability properties. |
| What is the key trust or recovery issue? | The user depends on the issuing mint for redemption. A common recovery guarantee across Cashu mints is not established in the documentation reviewed. | Recovery requires a threshold of keys and at least one guardian database; the project also says a majority of guardians could theoretically steal federation bitcoin. |
| How can developers integrate it? | Applications can implement the Cashu protocol specifications; interoperability does not establish that every mint or wallet is equally dependable. | Modules and an SDK support application integration, including Lightning routes. |
Is Cashu self-custodial?
Not in the sense that a user personally controls the bitcoin backing the ecash. Cashu’s blind-signature design is intended to keep a mint from linking a withdrawal to a later spend. That privacy property does not remove the mint’s role: the recipient still presents the token to the issuing mint for redemption.

If a mint is unavailable or refuses redemption, blind signatures do not, by themselves, give the holder another way to claim the backing bitcoin. Cashu’s open specifications let compatible applications interoperate at the protocol level, but they do not create a shared recovery guarantee across independently operated mints. Users therefore need to assess the particular mint and understand what happens if it stops serving them.

A Fedimint federation is a group of guardians running the protocol together. Guardians coordinate using AlephBFT, and the federation uses threshold signatures to move bitcoin from its multisignature wallet. No single guardian can move the bitcoin alone; the threshold also means a minority cannot do so unilaterally.

Fedimint’s operator documentation gives 3-of-4 and 5-of-7 as examples of majority thresholds. They are examples, not configurations that every federation uses. The threshold is the central trade-off: distributing signing authority reduces dependence on one operator, but users still rely on the federation’s composition, threshold, software, and continued operation.
The trust is not erased. Fedimint’s trust documentation says users trust guardians not to collude and warns that a majority could theoretically steal federation bitcoin. The model is distributed custody among guardians, not personal self-custody by each ecash holder.

What happens if guardians go offline?
Fedimint’s operator guide warns that if a majority of guardians disconnect, federation consensus halts until enough guardians return. A federation can therefore face an availability problem even when no guardian is acting maliciously. The threshold that constrains unilateral movement also means the system needs enough participating guardians to operate.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Recovery has a separate dependency. According to the operator guide, it requires at least the threshold number of keys and at least one guardian database. Guardian backups are encrypted with a password. A user should not interpret “threshold multisignature” as a promise that funds can always be recovered: the necessary key material, database, and access to the recovery process matter.

What to check before using either system
- Identify the issuer. For Cashu, find out which mint issued the token and what redemption depends on. For Fedimint, identify the federation and its guardians.
- Understand the failure path. Ask what happens if the mint or federation is unavailable, stops operating, or refuses a redemption.
- For a federation, examine the threshold and backup plan. Learn how many guardians must participate, who holds the keys, and whether the federation has the required database and password-protected backups for recovery.
- Separate protocol openness from deployment quality. A published protocol or compatible wallet does not establish that a particular operator, implementation, or federation is reliable.
- Keep the amount aligned with the trust you accept. Neither privacy features nor a distributed signing arrangement guarantee recovery under every failure or collusion scenario.
Running a Fedimint node is optional—and an operational responsibility
Fedimint is a software ecosystem, not a system that requires users to buy special hardware. Its operator documentation lists a minimum of 1 GB memory, 10 GB disk, and 1 CPU core, with 2 GB memory and 2 CPU cores recommended. The guide does not state a publication year for these requirements, and they are project-stated node requirements rather than independent hardware benchmarks.
The project materials describe home servers, old laptops, and cloud VPS instances as possible platforms. A Raspberry Pi is another optional single-board-computer direction, not a required or documented best choice. Operating a node also means taking on guardian or infrastructure responsibilities; it is not a way to avoid the federation’s trust and availability assumptions.
Fedimint documentation estimates about one second of added payment latency in most real-world scenarios. That is a project-published estimate, not an independently measured result for all deployments.
Bottom line on the “decentralized custody” claim
Cashu’s privacy design and Fedimint’s custody design solve different problems. Cashu’s blind signatures aim to obscure links between withdrawal and spending, while redemption remains dependent on the issuing mint. Fedimint distributes bitcoin custody across guardians and limits unilateral control, but introduces threshold, availability, recovery, and collusion assumptions. These distinctions support a careful comparison of the systems; they do not, on their own, substantiate a claim that the ecash ecosystem is broadly rising or that either model removes trust.
