Eau de parfum (EDP) often lasts longer than eau de toilette (EDT), because EDP generally has a higher fragrance-concentrate share. But the label alone cannot tell you how far a scent will project—or guarantee that one specific EDP will outlast a particular EDT. These descriptions are not a controlled comparison of two bottles made from the same formula at different concentrations. A fragrance house may formulate its EDP and EDT versions differently, so the names alone do not establish that they smell identical or perform in a predictable ratio.
That distinction matters when you are comparing a brand’s EDP and EDT versions of a familiar scent. The names may suggest related products, but they do not prove that the ingredients are identical or that the EDT is simply a diluted EDP. Treat each bottle as its own fragrance unless the brand explicitly explains how the versions relate. For an exact product, the brand’s own description is more useful than applying a generic concentration chart.

What “lasts longer” means—and what it does not
Longevity, also called tenacity, is how long a fragrance remains perceptible on skin after application. Aesop’s fragrance guide uses longevity and tenacity interchangeably for the length of time a scent lasts on skin. It is about duration, not how noticeable the fragrance is to someone standing several feet away.
A scent may remain detectable close to the wearer after it is no longer obvious to people nearby. Conversely, a fragrance may make a strong impression soon after application without remaining perceptible for as long. Those are different observations, so “long-lasting” does not necessarily mean “powerful” throughout the day.
The often-repeated shortcut—EDP lasts longer because it is more concentrated—captures a tendency, not a guarantee. Amouage’s Help Center puts the qualification plainly: “Usually, a higher perfume oil concentration means an increased performance of the fragrance (particularly longer-lasting scent) – but the impact of oil concentration is much more complex and varies depending on each formula.” That formula-specific caveat matters more than a generic hour range: the cited guidance does not establish a universal number of hours for either category.

It is also helpful to be precise about what you mean by “lasting.” You might mean that you can still smell the fragrance on your wrist when you bring it close, that someone beside you notices it, or that it leaves a trace as you move. Those are not interchangeable tests. If your goal is simply to enjoy a scent throughout your day, close-to-skin detectability may matter more than whether people across a room can smell it. If you are comparing bottles, decide which kind of staying power you care about before judging either one.
What “projects more” means
Projection describes how far a scent carries or can be detected from the wearer. It is not another word for longevity. A fragrance can sit close to the skin for a long time, or be noticeable at a greater distance for a shorter part of its wear.
Sillage is the scented trace left behind as a person moves. Aesop’s guide explains that the word comes from French and can describe a wake or trail; it is sometimes used for the trail a fragrance leaves as its wearer passes. The terms projection and sillage are related, but neither should be treated as a measure of how many hours the scent lasts on skin.

There is no universal EDP-versus-EDT winner for projection in the available evidence. A higher concentrate share does not by itself specify how readily a particular formula disperses or how noticeable it will be in a room. Ingredient volatility, the scent profile, the amount applied and the environment all affect the experience. Without a direct comparison of the exact products under comparable conditions, claims that EDP always projects farther—or that EDT always projects less—go beyond what the labels establish.
There is no verified distance that defines “good” projection, either. Room size, airflow, temperature, the number of people nearby and how much fragrance was applied all change what someone else can detect. A claim that a bottle projects a set number of feet or fills a room should therefore be treated as a product- and situation-specific claim, not as a reliable consequence of the EDP or EDT designation.
Why two fragrances behave differently
The formula and its ingredients
Concentration is one part of the formula, not a complete description of it. Amouage notes that performance varies from formula to formula. Aesop also identifies ingredient volatility as one factor in longevity. As a result, two fragrances with different labels—or even two products within the same category—cannot be ranked reliably from concentration alone.
Even within one fragrance family or brand, a scent’s materials and overall construction can affect how it unfolds. The concentration label tells you something about the amount of fragrance concentrate relative to the base; it does not identify the specific ingredients or explain how they will behave on skin. This is why a concentration percentage, where a brand provides one, cannot serve as a stand-alone performance score.
Application and amount
The amount applied affects the fragrance’s behavior. Aesop lists quantity applied among the factors that influence longevity. More application is not a reliable way to make an otherwise unsuitable scent last or project in every setting; it changes how much fragrance is present, but does not turn the EDP or EDT label into a guarantee about its character.
For a fair comparison, apply each fragrance in a similar way and avoid changing the amount dramatically between trials. Otherwise, you may be comparing different doses rather than learning what the two products are like. The point is not to find a universal number of sprays—none is established here—but to compare them under conditions that make sense for your usual wear.

Skin and personal circumstances
Aesop says body chemistry can affect how a fragrance interacts with the wearer’s skin. Its guide also names hormones and diet among the factors that can influence that interaction. That is one reason another person’s report of how long a scent lasts may not predict your result.
Skin is also the reason a paper strip or a first sniff at a counter cannot fully answer how a fragrance will wear for you. Those can help with an initial impression, but if performance on your body is the question, try the scent on your body. Allow it to develop before making a decision.
Temperature and surroundings
Heat and environment can affect fragrance behavior. Aesop identifies heat, temperature and environment among the influences on longevity and how a fragrance develops. The same bottle may therefore seem different across settings or occasions; a result observed in one place does not establish a fixed projection distance or wear time in another.

The useful question is not whether a fragrance projects the maximum possible distance, but whether its presence fits the place and situation where you plan to wear it.
How to choose between two actual bottles
Start with the experience you want rather than assuming a concentration label answers every question. If your priority is a scent that remains noticeable on your own skin for longer, EDP is a reasonable first clue. If the priority is a stronger scent trail or greater distance, the label is not enough: compare the specific fragrances on skin.
- Identify the exact products. Compare the scent profiles and the brand’s own descriptions for the two bottles, not just “EDP” against “EDT.” Do not assume the two versions are identical formulas with only a different amount of concentrate.
- Separate duration from scent radius. Decide whether you care more about how long you can still detect the fragrance close to your skin or how noticeable it is to other people. These are separate outcomes, so assess each on its own.
- Consider where you will wear it. A fragrance that is more noticeable at a distance may not suit every environment. Think about the setting and the amount you would be comfortable applying rather than treating maximum projection as an automatic advantage.
- Try it on your own skin. Aesop recommends sampling on the body because individual and environmental factors change how a fragrance behaves. If possible, try each product on separate occasions so you can notice its development without confusing the two scents.
- Give it time to develop. Do not decide only from the first impression. Aesop advises allowing fragrance to sit and develop, and avoiding rubbing after application. Notice how the scent changes and remains perceptible over the period that matters to you.
- Choose based on the result you observed. If one option better fits your desired duration, scent radius and setting, that is more useful evidence for your purchase than a category-level promise. If neither has been tested on your skin, treat any performance expectation as uncertain.
A simple comparison note can make the test more useful: record which product you wore, where you applied it, the setting, and when you could still detect it close to your skin. You can separately note when another person noticed it, if that is relevant to your decision. This is not a lab test, and the conditions will not be perfectly controlled, but it helps you compare your own experience rather than relying on a vague memory of the opening minutes.

If you are unsure whether you want the EDP or EDT, fragrance samples or discovery sets can be a practical way to test a scent before choosing a full bottle. Sampling is especially useful when your question is how a fragrance develops on your skin, rather than which category sounds stronger on paper. Look for a sample of the exact product you might buy; another fragrance from the same brand will not establish how this one wears.

Common assumptions that can mislead
- “EDP always lasts longer.” Higher concentration often supports longevity, but formula differences and other factors mean the category cannot guarantee the result for every pair of products.
- “EDP projects farther.” Projection is a separate quality. The EDP label does not establish that a scent will carry farther than an EDT.
- “EDT means weak.” The label describes a lower concentration in the brand-specific guidance cited here. It does not, by itself, establish how noticeable a particular fragrance will be.
- “A concentration chart predicts exact hours.” The cited sources do not establish a universal wear-time benchmark for EDP or EDT. Avoid treating a generic hour range as a promise for an individual product.
- “Another wearer’s result will match mine.” Skin, environment, temperature and other personal factors can change the experience. Someone else’s account can be useful context, but it is not a guarantee.

What the consumer statistic can—and cannot—tell you
Longevity is a meaningful shopping concern: a September 2021 presentation by The Fragrance Foundation, citing The NPD Group’s 2021 Consumer Fragrance Report, said nearly 80% of fragrance consumers considered “long lasting” important or extremely important when purchasing fragrance. That is a historical industry finding, not a current market estimate and not evidence that a particular EDP will outlast a particular EDT.
The figure can explain why shoppers ask about staying power, but it cannot decide which bottle is right for an individual. It describes what consumers said mattered when buying fragrance; it does not report a controlled EDP-versus-EDT wear test, a projection ranking, or a guaranteed number of hours. Use it as context for the shopping question, not as proof of a product claim.
So which should you buy?
If you are choosing without testing, EDP is the more reasonable starting point when longer wear is your main goal, because higher fragrance concentration often supports longevity. If you want to know which option projects more, or how either one will perform on your skin, the category label cannot settle it. Compare the exact formulas and sample them on your body over time. A particular EDT may suit you better than a particular EDP, and the right choice depends on the result you want in the setting where you plan to wear it.
