In current IEC terminology, residual-current device (RCD) is the broad category: an RCCB provides residual-current protection without integral overcurrent protection, while an RCBO combines residual-current and overcurrent protection. Because “ELCB” is used less precisely, check the device markings and product documentation to identify what a particular device actually does.
How an earth leakage circuit breaker works
An RCD monitors the currents flowing through the circuit conductors. Under normal conditions, their vector sum is zero. If some current takes an unintended path—such as leaking to earth—the currents no longer balance. The device detects that residual-current imbalance and disconnects the supply when it reaches the device’s operating sensitivity. ABB’s technical catalogue describes this operating principle and the device classifications.

The device’s purpose is to interrupt the circuit when leakage is detected. The name alone does not tell you its full protective capabilities or whether a particular unit is suitable for a specific installation.

What ELCB, RCD, RCCB and RCBO mean
“ELCB” remains a familiar term, but it is not specific enough on its own to establish the device’s construction or functions. Current IEC standards distinguish devices by whether they include overcurrent protection:
#1 Best Overall
- 5 Protection Functions: Type 2 20kA Surge orotection, 30mA Class AC ground fault Protection, Overcurrent protection,Short Circuit Protection, circuit isolation
- Power and Ground LED light to indicate the status of the breaker,T button to test the ground fault protect function, and visualization window to show if the breaker is on or off
- Suitable for 120V/240VAC circuit,Applicable to US 110V and 220V voltage
- Come with 1 x Din Rail for easy mounting and 5 x crimp lugs which help with stranded wire to insure good connections
- Wiring: Upper input, Bottom output, with both input and output ground wires connected to the ground terminal simultaneously
| Term | What it identifies | Overcurrent protection built in? |
|---|---|---|
| RCD | Broad category of residual-current devices | Depends on the device |
| RCCB | Residual-current operated circuit-breaker | No integral overcurrent protection |
| RCBO | Residual-current operated circuit-breaker with overcurrent protection | Yes |
| ELCB | Common, less precise label for an earth-leakage protective device | Cannot be determined from the label alone |
IEC 61008-1:2024 covers RCCBs without integral overcurrent protection, while IEC 61009-1:2024 covers RCBOs with integral overcurrent protection. IEC 62873-2:2016 provides terminology used in RCD product standards; it does not make the everyday label “ELCB” sufficient to identify a specific unit. See the IEC 62873-2:2016 vocabulary standard.
Does an earth leakage breaker protect against overload?
Not necessarily. An RCCB alone does not provide integral overcurrent protection, so it must be used with an MCB or fuse that protects it from overcurrent stresses, as ABB explains. An RCBO includes both residual-current and overcurrent protection. Read the device’s markings and technical documentation rather than assuming that an ELCB label means overload protection is included.

What the standards’ voltage and current figures mean
IEC’s 2024 standards state scope limits for household and similar-use products. These are descriptions of the standards’ coverage, not recommendations for an individual installation.
- IEC 61008-1:2024 covers household and similar-use RCCBs with stated scope up to 440 V AC and 125 A. Its intended purpose is principally protection against shock hazard.
- IEC 61009-1:2024 covers household and similar-use RCBOs with stated scope up to 440 V AC, 125 A rated current and 25,000 A rated short-circuit capacity.
Those figures do not establish the correct device or rating for a particular circuit.

- Class A rainproof, ideal for indoor and outdoor use
- Protect you and your appliances from electric shock: when leakage of electricity takes place, the module breaks the circuit automatically within 0.03 second
- Auto-reset when leakage is eliminated
- Safety certification: UL Listed
- In-line module, easy to install: for both input and output, connect 3 pcs of wire to joints marked black(L, live wire), green(E, earth wire) and white(N, null wire)
What to check when identifying a device
Use the markings on the unit and its manufacturer’s documentation to determine its functions and specifications. Relevant characteristics include:
- Whether it is an RCCB, RCBO or another device, and whether overcurrent protection is integral.
- The waveform or type of residual current it is designed to detect.
- Rated current and residual operating sensitivity.
- Voltage, pole configuration and compatibility with the installation.
- Applicable local requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions.
ABB identifies construction, detectable waveform, tripping sensitivity and tripping time as device-classification considerations. These characteristics must be considered in relation to the system and its requirements, not inferred from the generic name ELCB.

Why a definition cannot determine a replacement
Choosing or replacing a protective device depends on the installation, including the earthing system, device specification and local requirements. ABB’s Training Centre Singapore course outline treats earth-leakage protection alongside system earthing, application and device selection. A general definition cannot establish the right replacement, rating or type. For installation-specific advice, consult a qualified electrician and follow local requirements; do not open a distribution board or work on live wiring based on a definition alone.
