A screen case puts controls on the charging case; a watch can manage connected earbuds in supported setups. The right choice depends on the exact actions you need and the devices you already own—not on a proven speed or call-quality advantage.
What each option can control
Earbuds with a touchscreen case
JBL says the Live Flex 3’s 1.45-inch touchscreen case can control play, pause and track skipping, as well as accept or reject calls and mute them. JBL also says sound settings can be changed from the case without opening the phone app. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not independent performance findings. The JBL Tour Pro 3 is another model whose product page describes a touchscreen Smart Charging Case with playback and call-management controls. The available product descriptions do not establish that one JBL case is better than the other for these tasks. See JBL’s Tour Pro 3 product details.
A smartwatch paired with earbuds
A watch can be useful when it is already part of your setup, but support depends on the specific watch, phone and earbuds. Samsung describes connecting Samsung earbuds to a Galaxy Watch to manage calls and listen to music. Its support guidance says phone-call conversation audio on earbuds is available only with LTE Galaxy Watch models. Check the exact model and configuration rather than assuming that any smartwatch can route calls to any earbuds. Samsung’s connection guidance covers its own setup.

Controls built into the earbuds
You may not need either a watch or a screen case for basic actions. Microsoft documents Surface Earbuds gestures for play or pause, next and previous tracks, and volume; double-tapping can answer or end a phone call. Music gestures work only with supported apps, and calls require the earbuds to be connected to an iPhone or Android phone. Details are in Microsoft’s Surface Earbuds instructions.
Xiaomi’s REDMI Buds 6 Active support page documents double-tap playback and call actions, and triple-tap track skipping or call rejection. Its call controls are for phone calls, not calls in other apps. Gesture mappings vary by model, so consult the instructions for your earbuds. Xiaomi’s control instructions describe this model.

Choose by the actions you need
Start with a short checklist, because feature lists differ between devices:
- Music: Do you need only play and pause, or also skip tracks and adjust volume?
- Calls: Do you need to answer or end calls, reject incoming calls, or mute during a conversation?
- Your apps: If relying on earbud gestures, confirm that your music app is supported. Microsoft specifically limits Surface Earbuds’ music gestures to supported apps.
- Your device combination: Confirm the exact watch, phone and earbuds work together. Samsung’s guidance is specific to its Galaxy setup and includes an LTE-watch condition for call audio on earbuds.
If the controls you need are already available on the earbuds, a separate interface may add little. If you want controls displayed on the case, JBL’s documented models provide a direct screen-case example. If you already own a compatible watch, using it may avoid choosing earbuds for their case interface—but confirm the required functions first.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited manufacturer and support pages document features, not a head-to-head test. They do not establish which approach is faster, easier, more reliable, or better for call quality. They also do not support a fair comparison of price, battery impact or comfort. Treat those as model-specific questions to verify through current product information and independent testing, rather than assuming either interface has an advantage.
