E2B Sandbox Pricing, Lifecycle, and Alternatives: What to Check

E2B’s plan fee is only part of the bill. Compare session limits, metered CPU and memory, retained state, and alternatives before choosing a sandbox.

E2B may fit AI-agent and code-execution workloads when its session limits, concurrency, and state-management features match how your jobs run. Its Hobby tier is free with a one-time usage credit, while Pro adds a monthly fee before metered compute. Compare the full workload—not a headline rate—and verify lifecycle details against current documentation before building around them.

How E2B pricing works

E2B’s pricing page lists a free Hobby tier with a one-time $100 usage credit, sessions up to one hour, and 20 concurrent sandboxes. Pro is listed at $150 per month plus usage costs, with sessions up to 24 hours and 100 concurrent sandboxes included; add-ons can expand concurrency to 1,100. Enterprise pricing is custom, with committed usage and custom billing. These are provider-listed terms checked on October 7, 2026, and can change. Check E2B’s current pricing before budgeting.

Running compute is billed by the second, and CPU and memory configuration affect the usage charge. E2B’s pricing guide lists rates including $0.000014 per second for one vCPU, $0.000028 per second for two vCPUs, $0.0000090 per second for 2 GiB of memory, and $0.0000180 per second for 4 GiB. These are unit rates, not all-in workload estimates. The page also describes free storage allowances, but the applicable terms should be confirmed in the current calculator and pricing details. See E2B’s billing guide.

Estimate your own bill

For a useful estimate, account for the monthly plan fee, expected active runtime, CPU and RAM allocated to each sandbox, concurrency, any concurrency add-on, and storage. A workload that runs many short tasks may have a different cost profile from one that keeps fewer sandboxes active for long periods. The monthly Pro fee is only one part of the total.

What happens when an E2B sandbox pauses?

E2B describes pause, resume, snapshot, and fork as lifecycle capabilities. In practical terms, a running sandbox can execute work; a paused sandbox is intended to retain state between periods of execution; killing a sandbox permanently deletes it. E2B’s surfaced persistence guide says paused sandboxes preserve memory and files but cannot execute code. Confirm current behavior, limits, and retention rules in E2B’s persistence documentation before relying on a specific workflow.

Detailed timing, retention, and continuous-runtime limits appearing in a GitHub documentation mirror should not be treated as definitive current policy. Similarly, network connections and services may not remain available during a pause; check the current canonical documentation if clients or live connections must survive a pause.

Deployment and data boundaries

E2B’s enterprise materials describe E2B Cloud, bring-your-own-cloud (BYOC), private cloud, and Embed deployment options. These choices can affect data paths, key control, storage, and provisioning. The appropriate fit depends on your deployment and governance requirements; contractual SLA and support terms are set in the Enterprise agreement rather than guaranteed by general marketing descriptions. Review E2B’s enterprise options.

How the alternatives differ

Daytona and Modal illustrate why lifecycle and workload shape matter as much as a listed compute rate. Their documentation describes different state and billing models, so a fair choice starts with the behavior your application needs.

Provider Lifecycle and state Published compute pricing detail
E2B Pause, resume, snapshot, and fork are described; verify current limits and exact behavior. Examples include $0.000014 per second for one vCPU and $0.0000180 per second for 4 GiB memory, per E2B’s usage guide.
Daytona Ephemeral and persistent sandboxes; persistent sandboxes document stop/start, pause/resume, and fork. Pause/resume preserves memory and processes, subject to configuration restrictions. Paused or stopped sandboxes avoid CPU and memory charges, while persistent storage may remain billable.
Modal Sandbox execution is advertised for untrusted code. $0.00003942 per physical core-second for CPU (noted as corresponding to 2 vCPU) and $0.00000667 per GiB-second for memory.

Daytona’s documentation notes that pause has restrictions in some configurations, including attached volumes and Docker data devices; its persistent storage can continue to incur charges while compute is paused or stopped. Check the current Daytona sandbox documentation and persistent-sandbox guide for the configuration you plan to use.

Modal’s published rates use physical core-seconds and GiB-seconds, while E2B’s examples use vCPUs and per-second memory charges. Those units are not directly interchangeable. Modal’s listed rates are on its pricing page; check the current Modal sandbox guide and pricing terms for applicable workload details.

Choose by workload, not headline rate

  • Duration and concurrency: Match expected task length and simultaneous sessions to each provider’s limits and plan structure.
  • Required state: Decide whether jobs can be ephemeral or need files, processes, memory, snapshots, or forks preserved.
  • Total cost: Normalize active runtime and resource shape, then include plan fees, storage, and concurrency add-ons where applicable.
  • Deployment boundary: Determine whether hosted cloud is sufficient or whether customer-cloud or private deployment is necessary.
  • Configuration constraints: Validate attached storage, Docker support, network behavior, and other requirements against the lifecycle features you intend to use.

Provider-listed prices and features are not independent benchmarks. E2B also publishes customer testimonials, but a testimonial is not an independent security audit or performance measurement.
