They are not interchangeable. An e-way bill addresses GST movement compliance when required; a delivery challan documents certain goods movements or transactions; and a lorry receipt is the road carrier’s record of a consignment. A shipment may need more than one. Which documents apply depends on the goods, transaction or movement purpose, value, route, transport mode and current rules.
How the three documents differ

The GST Portal’s Welcome Kit for New Taxpayers includes delivery challans in its invoice/bill/delivery-challan framing and describes the e-way bill requirement. The available official material here does not set out every challan use case or a universal LR format, so treat those documents according to the transaction and carrier’s applicable procedures rather than assuming one format fits all shipments.

When the e-way bill threshold matters
The GST Portal welcome kit states: “e-Way Bill is mandatory for Inter-State movement of goods of consignment value exceeding Rs.50,000/- in motorized conveyance.” The statement is a general threshold, not a complete eligibility test: the kit also notes exemptions, and the applicable rules may depend on the goods, movement and current notifications. Check the current requirements before dispatch rather than relying on the threshold alone.

What changes with the transport mode
Transport mode affects the transport details recorded for an e-way bill; it does not by itself determine whether the movement is exempt from e-way bill rules. The surfaced Central Tax notification material lists road, rail, air and ship as modes. Its field descriptions specify a vehicle number for road, and a transport-document number and date for rail, air or ship. See the Central Tax notification material on e-way bill fields.
The GSTN-authorized IRIS Invoice Registration Portal describes e-way bill Part B as covering mode, transporter ID, road vehicle number when applicable, and distance. Choose documents in this order
- Describe the shipment. Identify the goods, consignment value, transaction or movement purpose, origin and destination, and whether it is inter-State or intra-State.
- Check e-way bill applicability. Use current official rules for the goods and route, including exemptions and special notifications. The welcome-kit threshold is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the complete current rule.
- Determine the goods document. Establish whether the transaction calls for an invoice, bill of supply, delivery challan or another supporting document. The appropriate document depends on the facts and applicable rules.
- Confirm the carrier record. For a road shipment, ask the carrier what lorry receipt or equivalent transport record it will issue, then match the consignment particulars against the shipment documents.
- Match transport details to the mode. Use the applicable road vehicle information or, for rail, air or ship, the relevant transport-document details in the e-way bill fields.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the documents as alternatives. They address different functions, so a carrier record or goods document does not automatically satisfy a GST movement-compliance requirement.
- Applying the Rs. 50,000 figure universally. The cited welcome kit frames it for inter-State movement in a motorized conveyance and notes exemptions; verify the current rules for the particular shipment.
- Assuming a challan or LR has one universal format or trigger. The applicable challan use depends on the transaction, while the carrier’s LR practices may vary.
- Confusing transport fields with eligibility. Correctly entering a vehicle or transport-document detail does not establish that an e-way bill is required or that an exemption applies.
What to verify before dispatch
Because a single source excerpt does not establish every delivery-challan use case or a universal lorry-receipt obligation, use current official GST rules and notifications for the shipment-specific decision. For uncertain transactions or route-specific conditions, confirm with a qualified tax professional or the relevant authority.
