To check whether your PS5 may qualify for Sony warranty service, confirm where it was purchased, compare its original purchase date with the warranty terms for that market, locate the required proof of purchase, and review the console’s serial number, fault, and repair history. Then submit a request through the official PlayStation service route for that market. Sony makes the final eligibility decision; warranty periods and procedures are not universal.
Check the market and purchase date first
Warranty terms depend on the market where the console was sold. Sony’s US warranty says it is valid only in the United States and Canada; other Sony materials set out terms for their own markets. If the PS5 was bought in one country and is now used or being serviced in another, ask Sony which terms and service route apply before assuming it can be handled locally.

Find the original purchase date on the receipt, invoice, or other purchase record, then compare it with the applicable local warranty period. For example, Sony’s US and Canada PS5 warranty states a one-year period from original purchase. Sony Malaysia also lists one year, starting from the invoice date. These are regional examples, not a global rule.

- United States: Sony requires a bill of sale or retailer receipt showing the original purchase date to obtain warranty service.
- EEA territories listed in Sony’s terms: The original proof should identify the purchase date and retailer.
- Japan: Sony specifies proof showing the purchase date, store name, and product name.
See Sony’s US warranty terms, EEA warranty terms, and Japan warranty support for the respective requirements. Do not assume that a document accepted in one market will satisfy another market’s rules.
Screen the console, fault, and repair history
Warranty coverage generally concerns qualifying defects in materials or workmanship, subject to the local terms. Before requesting service, check the console’s identity and consider how the fault occurred. Sony’s US terms list an altered, defaced, or removed serial number among exclusions. Sony’s EEA terms also identify a damaged or removed serial number and certain damage associated with opening or unauthorized repair as potential grounds to reject a claim.
The US terms also exclude specified damage involving misuse, accidents, unauthorized peripherals, unauthorized opening or service, and causes unrelated to defective materials or workmanship. These examples do not establish the outcome of an individual claim, and local exclusions may differ. Describe the fault and any previous repair accurately when contacting Sony.

Use the official service route for the purchase market
Once you have the purchase details and proof ready, start with Sony’s local PlayStation support or repair process. US owners can use PlayStation Repairs to request return authorization and get shipping instructions. Elsewhere, follow the local support route; Sony’s Latin America warranty information, for example, describes local authorized centers or customer service and includes country-specific procedures and exceptions.
In Malaysia, Sony asks customers seeking repair to bring the original invoice, packaging, and defective item; check the Malaysia warranty information for the local process. Requirements can vary by country, so use the instructions Sony provides for the relevant market rather than shipping the console on your own.
Prepare the PS5 before handing it over or shipping it
Service may change settings or result in storage being reformatted, so back up data before sending the console if possible. Sony’s US guidance also tells customers to remove peripherals and private or confidential content before shipment. The EEA terms advise backing up data and removing additional SSDs and other removable items as applicable.

Regional warranty examples
The following examples show why eligibility must be checked against the market where the PS5 was purchased. They are not a substitute for the current local terms.
| Market | Warranty period stated | Proof or service details |
|---|---|---|
| United States and Canada | One year from original purchase; the US warranty says it is valid only in the United States and Canada. | For US service, a bill of sale or retailer receipt showing the original purchase date is required. What to do if you are unsure
If the receipt is missing, the console was imported, the serial number is damaged, or the fault followed a repair or accident, contact the official support channel for the purchase market and explain the circumstances. Sony’s US terms say registration does not change the warranty offered on the product, so registration alone does not establish eligibility or replace the required proof of purchase.
