A same-day report from Wilson’s Media says E Ink’s next-generation Kaleido 4 display improves the three complaints most often associated with color E Ink: muted color, low contrast and slow refresh. Those improvements have not yet been matched by a published E Ink specification sheet or a confirmed list of shipping devices, so Kaleido 4 should be treated as a reported upgrade rather than a fully documented product standard.
What is confirmed today is the technology Kaleido 4 is expected to replace or complement. Kaleido 3 uses a color filter array over Carta black-and-white electronic ink. That design produces color without sacrificing the low-power, paper-like characteristics of E Ink, but color content is rendered at lower resolution than monochrome text.

What Kaleido 4 is reported to change
The Wilson’s Media report describes Kaleido 4 as an evolution of Kaleido 3, targeting:
- Improved color reproduction, so illustrations and highlighted passages should look less washed out.
- Better contrast between the colored filter and the underlying ink.
- Faster screen refreshes, which could make page turns, scrolling and interface animation feel less deliberate.
Those are reported goals, not independently verified measurements. No official Kaleido 4 resolution, color count, refresh-time table, module sizes or confirmed retail devices has been published in the material available for this article. A reader should therefore avoid treating “Kaleido 4” as a specification guarantee until E Ink or a device maker provides those details.

How Kaleido 3 works—and why color looks softer
E Ink’s April 7, 2022 description of Kaleido 3 identifies it as a Print Color ePaper design. A color filter array sits over Carta black-and-white ink film. The same panel can show crisp monochrome text or a palette of 4,096 colors, but those two modes do not have the same effective resolution.
| Specification | Kaleido 3 |
|---|---|
| Black-and-white resolution | 300 ppi |
| Color resolution | 150 ppi |
| Grayscale levels | 16 |
| Colors | 4,096 |
| Module sizes | 7.8, 10.3 and 13.3 inches |
| Color saturation versus Kaleido Plus | 30% higher, according to E Ink’s 2022 announcement |
The 150 ppi color figure explains a common experience: a black-and-white novel can look sharply typeset, while a color comic, chart or textbook illustration appears grainier at the same physical size. The filter also reduces the apparent whiteness of the background, so front-light brightness and viewing conditions matter more than they do on a monochrome reader.

Kaleido 4 versus Kaleido 3: what can be concluded now
| Question | What is established | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Color quality | Kaleido 4 is reported to improve color reproduction. | Exact gamut, saturation percentage and color count. |
| Contrast | The report says contrast is improved. | Measured contrast or reflectance figures. |
| Speed | Faster refresh is reported. | Black-and-white, fast-color and full-color update times. |
| Resolution | Kaleido 3 is 300 ppi monochrome and 150 ppi color. | Kaleido 4’s pixel densities and available sizes. |
| Products | No shipping model is confirmed here as Kaleido 4. | Device names, release dates and prices. |
In practical terms, Kaleido 4 matters most if it improves the compromises you notice: gray-looking backgrounds, subdued artwork or distracting flashes during navigation. It does not automatically mean that color pages will match the fine detail of a 300 ppi monochrome panel; that depends on the eventual color resolution and optical design.

Gallery 3 should not be confused with Kaleido. It is a full-color E Ink architecture with a published 300 ppi resolution. E Ink’s Korea product page lists different update modes rather than one universal refresh figure:

| Gallery 3 mode | Published update time |
|---|---|
| Black and white | 350 ms |
| Fast color | 500 ms |
| Standard color | 750–1,000 ms |
| Best color | 1,500 ms |
Gallery 3’s 300 ppi specification is attractive for comics, PDFs and other image-heavy material, but the slowest high-quality color mode can still feel much less immediate than an LCD or OLED display. “Better” depends on whether you prioritize color detail and fidelity or quicker interaction. Kaleido’s filter-over-Carta design has the additional advantage of a familiar sharp monochrome reading mode, while its color layer is 150 ppi in Kaleido 3.
Current e-readers using Kaleido 3
Rakuten Kobo announced the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour on April 10, 2024. Both use Kobo-optimized E Ink Kaleido 3 displays, not Kaleido 4.

Kobo says the Libra Colour can last up to 40 days and the Clara Colour up to 53 days, but those are manufacturer claims made under stated brightness, wireless and daily-reading assumptions. Actual endurance changes with front-light level, wireless use, note-taking and page-refresh behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould you buy a Kobo Libra Colour or wait?
Buy now if your priority is available hardware
- You want color covers, highlights, diagrams or comics immediately rather than waiting for an unannounced device.
- You prefer a physical page-turning design and want optional pen annotation through the Kobo Stylus 2.
- You are comfortable with 150 ppi color rendering and the more subdued, gray-tinted appearance typical of filtered color E Ink.
Wait if the compromises are your main concern
- You expect visibly stronger saturation and contrast than current Kaleido 3 readers provide.
- You frequently scroll, zoom PDFs or read artwork where refresh speed is critical.
- You would regret buying before Kaleido 4 specifications, prices and compatible devices are officially announced.
Waiting has an obvious uncertainty: there is no confirmed release schedule or product list in the available information. Buying the Libra Colour is therefore a decision based on its documented Kaleido 3 behavior, not on an upgrade promise.

How to evaluate any Kaleido 4 device when specifications appear
- Check color resolution separately from monochrome resolution. A single “300 ppi” headline can hide a lower-density color mode.
- Look for update times by mode. Ask whether the figure applies to black and white, fast color, standard color or the highest-quality color setting.
- Assess contrast with the front light off and on. The filter and lighting system jointly determine how gray the page appears.
- Confirm annotation compatibility. Pen support may require a particular stylus and may be limited to certain models or software.
- Read battery claims with their test conditions. Brightness, wireless connections and daily reading time can materially change the result.
What color E Ink still cannot replace
Even a successful Kaleido 4 launch would not turn an e-reader into a tablet. E Ink remains optimized for reflective reading, low glare and long battery life, while LCD and OLED displays generally provide richer saturation, smoother animation and faster zooming. Color E Ink is most compelling when comfortable reading and paper-like viewing matter more than video-speed interaction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will existing Kaleido 3 readers receive Kaleido 4 through a software update?
No. Kaleido 4 refers to display hardware; replacing the panel would require a new device, and no upgrade path has been established.
Are the Kobo Libra Colour and Clara Colour Kaleido 4 models?
No. Kobo identifies both 2024 readers as using Kobo-optimized Kaleido 3 displays.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a 300 ppi color specification guarantee faster page turns?
No. Resolution and refresh time are separate characteristics. Gallery 3, for example, lists 300 ppi but color updates ranging from 500 ms to 1,500 ms depending on mode.
