An electric field shifts selected particles toward the screen surface; their position determines whether each area looks light or dark. The display reflects ambient light rather than producing the image with a conventional backlight.
How an electrophoretic display makes each pixel
In E Ink’s basic two-particle monochrome example, millions of microcapsules—each roughly the diameter of a human hair—contain clear fluid and oppositely charged black and white particles. Applying an electric field moves one type of particle toward the viewing surface. White particles at the surface make that area appear light; black particles make it appear dark. The particles do not emit light: they change the reflective appearance of the screen. E Ink’s explanation of how the technology works describes this basic model.

“Electrophoretic display” names the image-forming mechanism. “E Ink” is the company name and a family of products, while “e-paper” is a broader term for electronic paper-like displays. Not every display called e-paper necessarily uses electrophoresis. Even within E Ink’s products, the microcapsule model is only a starting point: the company also describes Microcup structures and systems with multiple pigment colors. E Ink’s technology overview outlines those variations.
Why the display does not need a backlight
A conventional LCD uses a light source behind the panel, with liquid crystals controlling how much of that light passes through. An electrophoretic screen instead reflects ambient light, much as printed paper does. The particles alter what the surface reflects; a rear light is not needed to form the image. E Ink’s FAQ explains the reflective approach.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In a dark room, an e-reader may use a front light to illuminate the screen surface so the reader can see it. That light is directed at the reflective display; it does not make the electrophoretic layer a backlit display.
Why an image remains after the update
E Ink describes its displays as bistable: power is required to change the particle arrangement, but not to maintain the resulting image. Text, labels, and signage can therefore remain visible between updates without continuous power to the display layer. E Ink’s FAQ makes this claim for its displays.

This does not mean an entire e-reader or sign uses no power while an image is unchanged. Its controller and other electronics may still draw power, and changing the image requires an update.

Updates are not the same as video refreshes
Moving pigment particles to update a screen is less suited to continuous motion than the rapid image changes expected of typical video displays. E Ink says one update mode can be as short as 120 ms for an entire display, but that vendor-reported figure is not a universal refresh time or a promise of video performance: the mode and platform matter. E Ink also says current production modules do not support video-rate updates and that constant updates reduce power efficiency. Its technology information describes these qualifications.

Color depends on the display structure
Color electrophoretic displays do not all work the same way. E Ink describes three- and four-particle Microcup systems for limited colors such as black, white, red, and yellow, as well as other platforms using multiple colors of particles. The pigment arrangement and cell structure depend on the product family; it is inaccurate to assume every color e-paper screen is a monochrome panel with an ordinary LCD color filter. E Ink’s overview of its technology describes these system differences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where this display approach fits
Reflective, bistable screens suit applications where a static image should remain readable without repeatedly refreshing it, such as e-reader pages, labels, and signage. They are a less natural fit when the main requirement is smooth, continuous motion. For someone exploring the hardware, E Ink says it sells display modules to device makers and offers developer kits. A module may need a controller, host electronics, and compatible software, so availability of a kit does not by itself guarantee plug-and-play use. E Ink’s FAQ discusses modules and kits.
