Then check the SVG’s viewport and viewBox, the export area, and any resampling or edge-rendering settings. Export a fresh PNG at the dimensions it needs where it will be used; increasing the size of an existing small PNG cannot restore vector detail.
Start by identifying where the blur appears
Compare the SVG and PNG at the same on-screen size. If the SVG is sharp and only the PNG is soft, focus first on export dimensions and any resizing applied after export. PNG is a raster format: it contains a fixed grid of pixels. An application or webpage can enlarge that grid, but doing so may make edges look blurred or pixelated. Keep the SVG as your editable source when you may need other sizes.

- If both versions look wrong, inspect the artwork and its layout as well as the export settings.
- If the PNG looks soft only after being placed in another app or webpage, check the displayed size there; the image may be scaled beyond its pixel dimensions.
- If the image looks sharp but has unexpected margins or cropping, investigate the SVG’s bounds and export area rather than increasing its resolution.
Check the SVG viewport and viewBox
The root <svg> element’s width and height describe the viewport—the rectangle in which the SVG is displayed. Its viewBox describes the user-space rectangle containing coordinates and dimensions for the artwork. The renderer maps the viewBox into the viewport, which can scale the artwork. - Inspect the opening
<svg>tag and note itswidth,height, andviewBox. - Check whether CSS, the editing application, or the export settings change the viewport size.
- Compare the artwork’s intended bounds with the viewBox. An unexpectedly large viewBox can make the artwork occupy only a small part of the output; a too-tight one can crop it.
Match aspect ratio and export bounds to the intended image
If the viewBox and viewport have different aspect ratios, preserveAspectRatio affects how the artwork fits. The default behavior, xMidYMid meet, preserves the full viewBox and centers it, which can leave unused space in the viewport. MDN documents the preserveAspectRatio behavior. A PNG with extra space or unexpected framing may therefore need a bounds or ratio adjustment, not more pixels.

Inkscape’s PNG export provides four areas. Choose the one that matches the image you want:
- Page: exports the page area.
- Drawing: exports the drawn objects.
- Selection: exports the selected objects.
- Custom: uses coordinates you enter.
These options are described in the Inkscape Beginners’ Guide to exporting a PNG. Choosing Page when you need only the artwork, for example, can add unwanted space around it; choosing a tighter area can change the output dimensions.

Set PNG pixel dimensions for its destination
Decide how many pixels the final use requires, then enter the intended width and height in the export controls. Compare those output dimensions with the size at which the PNG will be displayed. If a webpage or another app scales the raster, check its rendered dimensions too.

That is an Inkscape-specific default, not a universal quality threshold or a guarantee that an export will look sharp at every display size. DPI alone does not tell you whether the PNG has enough pixels for its final use. For print, ask the destination workflow for its required pixel dimensions or resolution rather than relying on a universal DPI rule. See the Inkscape command reference for the documented default.

- Determine the required pixel width and height for the destination.
- Choose the intended export area and enter those pixel dimensions in the PNG export settings.
- Export from the SVG, then verify the resulting PNG’s actual dimensions and appearance at its intended display size.
Re-export instead of enlarging an undersized PNG
If the current PNG has fewer pixels than the destination needs, return to the SVG and export a larger raster. Enlarging the existing PNG interpolates its fixed pixels; it does not recreate the original vector detail. Adobe explains this distinction in its guide to raster and vector files.
Keep the SVG for future resizing and create a PNG sized for each destination that requires raster artwork. This avoids repeatedly resizing the same raster and makes the exported pixel dimensions explicit.

Investigate one-pixel differences and edge appearance separately
Fractional scaling can change an output dimension
When an application scales an image to a fractional pixel size, rounding may make an exported dimension one pixel larger than expected. That is a sizing discrepancy, not by itself proof that the image is blurry. Check the PNG’s actual dimensions when an exact size matters. Adobe describes this behavior in its Photoshop guidance on exported images that are one pixel larger.
Rendering hints do not add pixels
SVG’s shape-rendering values are hints to the renderer. For example, crispEdges may disable antialiasing or align edges to device pixels, while geometricPrecision emphasizes geometric precision. These settings can change how edges appear, but they do not increase the PNG’s pixel count; harder edges may come at the expense of smooth curves. MDN describes the shape-rendering options.

Similarly, image-rendering is a speed-versus-quality hint for image processing and, in SVG, applies to <image> elements. It is not a way to recover detail missing from an undersized PNG. See MDN’s image-rendering reference.

- Only the PNG is soft: check its pixel dimensions and whether it is enlarged after export.
- The framing or margins are wrong: inspect the root SVG dimensions, viewBox, aspect ratio, and selected export area.
- The PNG needs to be larger: export again from the SVG at the target pixel dimensions instead of enlarging the existing raster.
