E Ink unveils Kaleido 4 color e-paper: what changes and which readers use it first

Kaleido 4 is officially announced, with Hanvon’s M10C II as its first named product. E Ink claims major gains, but Kindle, Kobo and PocketBook adoption is not confirmed.

E Ink announced Kaleido 4 on October 15, 2026, but it is not yet a replacement panel confirmed across Kindle, Kobo or PocketBook readers. E Ink identifies Hanvon’s M10C II as the first terminal product using the new display technology. The company claims more than double the previous color-gamut volume, 15% higher white reflectance, 50% higher contrast, faster page and scrolling response, and support for 18-frame-per-second video. Those figures are manufacturer claims; independent hands-on testing and broad retail availability were not established at launch.

What Kaleido 4 is

Kaleido is E Ink’s color e-paper system. It combines a color-filter array with an underlying Carta black-and-white electronic-ink layer, allowing a panel to show color illustrations while retaining the low-power, paper-like behavior associated with e-readers. Kaleido 4 is the announced next generation of that platform, with a new oxide-TFT backplane intended to drive the pixels at higher voltage and update them more quickly.

E Ink chairman Johnson Lee described the release, in an English translation of the official Chinese announcement, as a comprehensive improvement to “color performance, brightness, contrast, paper-like reading experience and dynamic display capability.” The wording is E Ink’s description of the technology, not an independent laboratory assessment.

What E Ink says is better than Kaleido 3

The launch focuses on the weaknesses that have limited color-filter e-paper: muted color, lower apparent brightness than a conventional white e-paper panel, contrast loss and slow motion. E Ink reports the following changes for Kaleido 4:

#1 Best Overall
Kobo Clara Colour | Colour eReader | 6” Glare-Free Colour E Ink Kaleido™ 3 Display | Dark Mode Option | Waterproof | Audiobooks | 16GB of Storage | White

  • 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗬 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 - Made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection
Claimed change Figure and qualification
Color gamut More than twice the prior color-gamut volume, exceeding 40,000, according to E Ink’s October 2026 announcement.
White reflectance 15% higher, according to E Ink.
Contrast 50% higher, according to E Ink.
Page and scroll response 27% faster in the Hanvon M10C II implementation, according to E Ink; this is a device-specific result rather than a guarantee for every Kaleido 4 product.
Video capability Support for 18 frames per second in the Hanvon implementation, according to E Ink.

“18 FPS” should not be read as proof that a Kaleido 4 reader will behave like a television or a 60-Hz LCD tablet. Frame rate depends on the device’s electronics, software, video format and power settings, and the cited figure is a vendor specification rather than an independent motion test.

What Kaleido 3 established

E Ink’s April 7, 2022 Kaleido 3 release describes a color-filter array over Carta black-and-white ink. Its published specifications include 16 grayscale levels, 4,096 colors, 300 pixels per inch for grayscale and 150 ppi for color on the listed panel sizes. E Ink also reported 30% higher color saturation than Kaleido Plus.

  • Read in color – The 7" Colorsoft display is high-contrast and easy on the eyes, with paper-like color that brings covers and content to life.
  • A brand-new experience – The Kindle Colorsoft display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Kindle Paperwhite display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
  • Color your pages – Highlight your favorite scenes in yellow, orange, blue, and pink.
  • Marathon reading – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 8 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Grayscale levels 16
Color count 4,096 colors
Resolution 300 ppi grayscale; 150 ppi color
Color improvement over Kaleido Plus 30% higher saturation, according to E Ink

The Kaleido 4 gamut-volume figure and Kaleido 3 color-count figure measure different things, so they should not be treated as a precise one-to-one color comparison. The credible conclusion is narrower: E Ink is targeting a substantially wider color range, brighter whites and stronger contrast in the new generation.

These specifications describe that model, not every Kaleido 3 reader. Screen size, lighting, software, stylus support, battery behavior and ergonomics still vary by product.

Is Kaleido 4 coming to Kindle, Kobo or PocketBook?

There is no cited official announcement confirming a Kaleido 4 Kindle, Kobo reader or PocketBook model at the time of E Ink’s launch announcement. Amazon’s 2024 announcement confirms its first color Kindle, but does not identify the panel as Kaleido 4. PocketBook’s catalog continues to list the products above as Kaleido 3 devices. Kobo adoption is likewise unconfirmed by the cited official sources.

That makes Hanvon’s M10C II the first named terminal product, not evidence of a broad replacement cycle. Manufacturers can announce products at different times, use custom panel sizes or pair the same panel generation with different front lights and software. A retailer listing that says “color E Ink” is not enough to establish the generation.

Should you wait for a Kaleido 4 reader?

Wait if color and motion are your priority

Waiting is sensible if you want the best chance of improved comic, magazine and illustrated-book color, or if faster scrolling and the possibility of video matter more than buying immediately. The announced reflectance, contrast and gamut gains address the main visual compromises of color-filter e-paper.

Buy a Kaleido 3 model if you need a reader now

A documented Kaleido 3 device can make sense for reading color books today, especially when a specific model’s waterproofing, storage or store ecosystem fits your needs. Do not buy on the assumption that its panel will later become Kaleido 4 through a firmware update; panel generation is hardware.

What to verify before purchasing

  1. Check the exact panel generation in the manufacturer’s specifications, rather than relying on “color e-paper” in a retailer headline.
  2. Confirm grayscale and color resolution separately. Kaleido panels can have different effective ppi figures for black-and-white and color content.
  3. Look for the regional release date, seller, warranty and return terms, because availability can differ by country.
  4. Check front-light behavior, stylus and note-taking features, operating system and bookstore support, battery claims and waterproofing on the exact model.
  5. Treat Kaleido 4 performance numbers as E Ink’s launch claims until independent measurements are available.

The practical takeaway

Kaleido 4 is an official new E Ink platform with ambitious improvements in color gamut, reflectance, contrast, refresh behavior and motion support. It has not yet been shown to replace the Kaleido 3 panels in mainstream Kindle, Kobo or PocketBook readers. For now, Hanvon’s M10C II is the first named product, while current PocketBook color models remain documented Kaleido 3 devices. The right buying decision depends on whether you need a reader immediately or prefer to wait for model-specific reviews, pricing and regional availability.
