Dyson CameraJet is a real $499.99 electric toothbrush, not a concept. Its 100,000-pixel camera and machine-learning system watch the spaces between teeth and fire a targeted mouthrinse jet while you brush. The problem is first-generation reliability: Dyson acknowledged that one production batch of jet tubes could seep water, temporarily taking stock off sale. That does not show every CameraJet fails, but it does make the premium difficult to justify before the fix and independent evidence are clear.
What the Dyson CameraJet is supposed to do
CameraJet combines variable sonic oscillation with a macro camera, onboard processing and a directed rinse system. Dyson calls the detection method Gap Optical Targeting. The company says the camera captures 28 live images per second and its machine-learning software identifies gaps between teeth in real time. When the system decides a gap needs attention, it triggers a precision burst of mouthrinse.

The camera has a stated resolution of 100,000 pixels. That is an unusual amount of sensing hardware for a toothbrush, and Jake Dyson described the underlying technology to TechRadar as “essentially a $70,000 piece of lab equipment in a handheld consumer product.” The engineering ambition explains the price, but expensive sensing does not by itself prove better dental outcomes.

What is in the box
Dyson’s launch description lists a refill dock, two regular brush heads and a charging cable. The system is designed around Dyson toothpaste and mouthrinse, so the full routine depends on consumables beyond the brush itself. Launch materials do not state the retail price or replacement interval for those refills or for replacement brush heads.

Why availability was interrupted
Marie Claire quoted a Dyson spokesperson saying that “one production batch of jet tubes had experienced a process issue, creating the potential for water seepage which affected the performance of a small number of products early on.” Dyson said it isolated the impacted products, which produced a temporary out-of-stock position, and apologized to customers.
The jet tube is positioned beside the water reservoir. Seepage can therefore do more than create a cosmetic leak: it can reduce or stop the precision-rinse function, the feature that most clearly separates CameraJet from a conventional electric brush. The statement describes a batch-specific process problem and a small number of products, not a finding that every unit is defective. It does mean buyers should treat early availability and reliability as unresolved rather than assume a mature product record.

How much CameraJet costs

At $499.99 in the United States, CameraJet costs several times more than established electric toothbrushes. No single competing model or benchmark price is specified in the launch coverage, so the useful comparison is not a precise dollar multiple but what the premium buys: camera guidance, automated gap targeting and a rinse mechanism, along with more hardware that can fail and more specialized supplies to maintain.
Does it actually work?
There are two different questions: whether the device can perform its programmed routine, and whether that routine produces better oral-health results than a good conventional electric toothbrush.

What Dyson has tested
Dyson says CameraJet was tested in a laboratory using its proprietary proxy plaque. The proxy was developed through a funded research collaboration with the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Dentistry. Dyson’s broader launch materials also refer to a clinical test.
Those are manufacturer-reported results. The available launch information does not establish an independent, peer-reviewed comparison showing that CameraJet removes more plaque, prevents more disease or improves long-term outcomes than leading electric toothbrushes. Until that evidence exists, the camera and jet should be viewed as an ambitious guidance system, not a clinically proven upgrade.

What the jet is—and is not
The targeted burst is a mouthrinse delivery step. It is not mechanical floss, and the materials do not establish that it replaces daily interdental cleaning. A jet may help a user notice or rinse a difficult area, but it should not be presented as proof that string floss, interdental brushes or a dentist-recommended alternative are unnecessary.

The behavioral case for CameraJet is therefore plausible—more feedback might encourage longer, more systematic brushing—but it remains an assumption until measured outside Dyson’s testing.

Who should buy now—and who should wait
Consider waiting if reliability is your priority
- You need a dependable daily brush and do not want to monitor a reservoir or jet tube for leaks.
- You want independent clinical evidence before paying a premium.
- You do not want a routine tied to proprietary toothpaste and mouthrinse.
- You are buying for someone who may be unable to troubleshoot a water-related fault.
The premium may make sense for a narrow use case
- You are comfortable paying for an early, technically complex product.
- Visual feedback is likely to change your brushing habits more than a timer or pressure sensor would.
- You accept that the documented evidence is primarily Dyson’s own laboratory and launch material.
- You can obtain replacement consumables and support in your market once stock stabilizes.
What to do if you already own one
- Check the jet-tube and reservoir area for visible moisture, unexpected dripping or a rinse burst that stops working.
- If you see seepage or the jet function behaves erratically, stop using the rinse feature and keep the unit dry rather than continuing to charge or operate a visibly wet device.
- Contact Dyson support with the serial number, purchase date and proof of purchase. Ask whether your unit is covered by the affected production-batch action or a replacement program.
- Continue brushing with a functioning brush head while the issue is assessed; do not treat a disabled rinse jet as evidence that ordinary brushing is complete.
Dyson’s public statement does not provide a universal repair deadline or a single remedy for every market, so the available action can depend on your region and the specific unit.
Bottom line
CameraJet is technically distinctive and its $499.99 US price is genuine. The camera, 28-frame-per-second analysis and targeted mouthrinse could make neglected gaps easier to address, but the product’s defining hardware was affected by a documented production-batch seepage issue, and independent proof of superior dental results is not established. Until reliability records and outside clinical comparisons catch up with the engineering, a proven conventional electric toothbrush remains the lower-risk choice for most buyers.
