IIT Kanpur and NSRCEL, the flagship business incubator of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), signed a memorandum of understanding in Bengaluru on 14 October 2026. The partnership is designed to move research-driven technologies toward market-ready companies, with an early emphasis on defence, aerospace and allied dual-use applications.
What the IIT Kanpur–IIMB partnership does
The agreement links IIT Kanpur’s technology and research capabilities with NSRCEL’s entrepreneurship, mentoring and business-development experience. Rather than announcing a single fund or a new standalone incubator, the MoU establishes a framework for the institutions to build programmes together.

The first visible programme linked to the collaboration is IIT Kanpur’s SCALE Catapult deep-tech startup accelerator. Its first cohort is focused on defence, aerospace and allied dual-use technologies—technologies that can serve both civilian and strategic applications.

That focus reflects the development path for many deep-tech companies. A laboratory prototype may require specialist testing, certification, manufacturing partners, government or defence customers, and patient capital before it can become a viable business. A conventional startup-support programme may offer useful commercial mentoring but lack access to the technical facilities and research expertise needed to clear those hurdles. The partnership is intended to combine both sides.
NSRCEL CEO Rasika Prashant said the arrangement aligns with India’s goal of building robust defence and aerospace capabilities and could help identify and nurture “the next generation of deep-tech innovators in strategic sectors of national importance.”

How SCALE Catapult fits into the MoU
A named accelerator for strategic-sector founders
SCALE Catapult is the specific IIT Kanpur accelerator identified in the announcement. Its inaugural cohort targets defence, aerospace and related dual-use technologies. The MoU gives that accelerator a route to draw on NSRCEL’s startup-building capabilities while also creating a basis for future programmes beyond the first cohort.

The 14 October announcement does not publish a cohort size, funding amount, acceptance rate, application deadline, eligibility checklist, fee schedule or equity terms. Founders should confirm those details on the live SCALE Catapult or NSRCEL programme pages before applying or making financial plans.

Can NSRCEL and IIT Kanpur co-incubate a startup?
Yes, co-incubation is explicitly included in the MoU, and an earlier operating precedent describes how it may work. A November 2025 SIIC IIT Kanpur newsletter records a 17 November 2025 agreement with IIMB Innovations covering leadership mentoring, consultation, digitised programme delivery, joint incubation, exchange of best practices, and jointly hosted seminars and workshops.
That newsletter says startups identified by NSRCEL-IIMB may be co-incubated at the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur through a unified digital Co-Incubation Model. Infrastructure access and incubation arrangements are governed by the participating institute’s guidelines.

In practical terms, a founder may have a pathway that combines NSRCEL’s business support with SIIC’s institutional and technical environment. The existence of that pathway does not mean every NSRCEL startup is automatically accepted by SIIC; selection, facility access and other conditions remain subject to the applicable programme and institute rules.

Why the institutional link matters
For IIT Kanpur, the partnership addresses the “last-mile” challenge of turning strong research into companies that can win customers and scale. Dean (Research and Development) Prof Jayandharan Giridhara Rao described the institute as having a strong deep-tech innovation pipeline and said creating market pathways is an institutional priority.
